love me some Aretha, nice relaying listening
Wonderful album - Aretha in a big band context, with arrangements by Quincy Jones!!
I have so many Aretha albums including the two that made this cd. I should have read more clearly that this was previously released music
Look, don't get me wrong here, I LOVE Aretha. But this CD, IMHO falls short in it's entirety. HOWEVER, Aretha singing "Crazy, He Calls Me Crazy" is incomparable and simply glorious. It is in my top three of best Jazz Vocals of all time. On the other end of the spectrum, her treatment of "Moody's Mood" does not do the tune justice at all. All in all, as anyone knows, Aretha Franklin is one of God's gifts to the world of music, with a voice and a style beyond compare. It's just that this recording, with the exception of the aforementioned tune "Crazy, He Calls Me Crazy" is quite forgettable.
This album is worth every penny paid, just for its recording of "Somewhere". In this one recording, more than any other recording I have ever heard, Ms Franklin exposes in the most achingly naked way, the plaintive sense of longing and dispair from hopes unrealized, but never really given up.
Jazz..Aretha...what's not to like.
Aretha was supported by the cream of the US jazz establishment. My only crit is that the CD is not longer!
