Purchased At: $154.28

The new leader in affordable and portable SSD's. I have been doing a ton of video editing lately mainly digitizing and restoring old VHS tapes. The files I'm generating generally start out around 80gb's so while this purchase was somewhat of a whim, it was more necessity. I also recently purchased a Samsung T5 for the same purposes and it is as great as the dearth of reviews on it already state. It has a slightly smaller and lighter footprint than the G-Drive but head to head I'll take the G-Drive to get the extra ruggedized features. As far as speed, the G-Drive and T5 are blazing fast for external drives so no disappointment here that I didn't choose an internal SATA drive. The G-Drive specs out slightly faster than the T5 but in my usage there aren't any appreciable speed differences. The G-Drive and the T5 blow my mind on both 3.0 and 3.1 ports- I've never used any external drives as fast as these. I will definitely be purchasing another G-Drive SSD R because I prefer the ruggedized features and price-wise it's generally a better value (though not always) than the T5 on a per GB basis. I do not regret buying a T5, I believe in the end it will probably come down to price for most people when considering these two.
Windows users must reformat the G-Drive as your machine will not recognize it. Unless you absolutely need cross platform use between MAC and PC just format the drive to NTFS as it is more stable than exFAT. There are very detailed OS specific reformatting instruction for NTFS and exFAT on the G Technologies support pages.
*Purchased another one of these in the 1TB size and could not be more satisfied and confident with my storage/back up solution.

Purchased as new, yet device was already opened and had an RMA sticker from July 2018.

Incredible drive! In the last 5 year's, I've gone through 7 Western Digital or Samsung external USB drives, but this is my first SSD. This is by far the best external drive I've ever owned.

Pros:
• Solid construction! Really well built.
• Super fast! In some tests, it has outperformed MacBook Pro's internal SSD
• Light weight and very small
• Easy to set up and use
• Very responsive to utilities and use

Cons
• None . . . . I love this drive!

Though to be fair, SSD's are still overpriced. They have not changed much in the last few years and that's not right..... None the less, this is a fantastic drive. I've had it for roughly 3 months and it's been flawless. Unlike my Wester Digitals which seem to have a 50% fail rate in the first year. Really, I've replaced so many under warranty I'm not sure how the company stays in business.

This G drive gets an F.
Looks great but works as fast as a molasses in winter. Cannot watch 4k footage from my drone storage, but can still view files with the old hard drive.
Paid for the 500gig model, but right now it's just a nice paper weight.

Shipped from USA to Russia within only 12 days, very quickly. There are a lot of reviews that this SSD has extremely high speed, so I would say few words about design - the best on the market! I tried to choose between G-tech and Samsung, but design is much better, so I bought G-tech. Additional advantage is USB-C/USB and USB-C/USB-C high quality cables are included, so you don’t need to buy Apple USB-C/USB cable! A little saving, but nevertheless...

I'm a pro photographer and videographer and this works awesome! I edit my work 1/2 the year and allows me switch from my laptop to desktop while working on the same job. Examples: I shoot a wedding and create an adobe lightroom library for it on the drive and then cull my images anywhere I want and then plug the drive into my desktop and further edit the photos on my desktops big screen and faster processor.

The drive itself is very small and is 1/2 the size of my hand...fits easily in my pants pocket! It's super durable as it's flash memory encased in a solid shell with breathable slats. It doesn't get hot, its silent and doesn't need additional AC. My only regret is that I didn't invest in the 2TB but the 1TB is fine for now as I finish up my editing. When I'm all done editing for my clients I then purchase inexpensive WD 8TB Drives for each year and archive them.

Installed in in a 2017 iMac 5K that came with a 1 TB Fusion drive. Before this machine I had a 2009 iMac in wich I had installed an internal SSD and that machine was faster than my new iMac. After adding memory, checking and double checkin all the settings I could think of to speed it up I decided to try this external SSD. Wow,it cut my start up time inhalf but best of all, all the other tasks are easily 5 times faster now.

I can't speak to durability. It's attached to my computer and it always stays there untouched.

Really fast drive. I have a 512GB internal SSD that contains only OS and applications. This external drive contains all my image files. Until new technology comes along, this is the best configuration I've ever used. Love this drive.

I agree with the other reviewers. This is an excellent drive for the price. I also have the Samsung T5 which is great, but this drive is better value for money. If you plan to use this drive on a Windows computer, setting up the drive can be a little confusing, so I hope the following helps:

WINDOWS USERS: This drive arrives formatted for APPLE computers. When you plug it into a PC (Windows 7/10 etc) you will hear the drive connect, but no drive letter will appear, so you can't access the drive straightaway.

These leads some to think the drive is broken / not working. Not true, the drive needs to be reformatted to work on a PC but the way to do this is as follows:

Ensure the drive is plugged in then...

1.) RIGHT CLICK on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your taskbar
2.) Select DISK MANAGEMENT from the menu
3.) You will see the G-Drive listed (usually as DISK 2)
4.) Look at the GRAPHIC of the hard drive and RIGHT CLICK on the PARTITION (The largest bit)
5.) Choose the option to DELETE PARTITION. Once complete it will say UNALLOCATED SPACE
6.) RIGHT CLICK on the Unallocated Space and select FORMAT and format it as NTFS (This is the only option available for PCs)
7.) You can choose to QUICK FORMAT although I prefer to do a full format to set the disk up.
8.) At the end of the FORMAT process Windows will assign a drive letter to the drive and it will open (D: / E: etc..)
9.) If you now EJECT the drive using the icon on your task bar and plug it back in, it will open as a Windows drive with a Drive letter.

Sorry if the above all sounds complicated, it is easier to do it that it appears!

You then have a brilliant SSD drive to use for all your PC / Windows files.

Very small and lightweight which although for me not essential for others may be an important factor. Currently in use as a back up device for I-Mac and MacBook Pro. Works straight out of the box with Time Machine. Four star rating will probably be five when the unit has proved itself reliable. Overall a well priced SSD for the Mac user, if needs dictate I will have no hesitation in purchasing a second.I almost forgot the important bit...it's fast!

It is a very convenient size and weight for an external SSD drive of an economic capacity. It certainly feels quiet rugged, at the same time it has no awkward corners or switches on it. I am using it to build a mirrored library of my extensive collection of digital photographs, which will match the same data on my cloud storage. This is an insurance exercise to manage the library, with the cloud element to act as an offsite back up.

Excellent little piece of kit, very fast, and much smaller than I expected. Having had two brand new Lacie drives fail on me in the last 6 months, I decided to try an SSD which, whilst being far more expensive, have a much better reputation for longevity. Obviously I can't prove how long it will last, but first impressions are that it is more than up to the job. Write speeds are lightning fast, and it works flawlessly with my Macbook. All in all, very pleased so far, just wish they weren't so expensive.

Very fast drive. I like that it doesn’t sleep which means it is immediately available after waking the computer.... unlike the sata drive this has replaced which often had to be dismounted then remounted after the computer was woken from sleep.
