The embrace of women’s sports sometimes feels almost like a political act...Molly Schiot’s Game Changers: The Unsung Heroines of Sports History is so valuable. The Wall Street Journal

“A thoughtful, exhaustively researched, and long-overdue tribute to the women who have paved the way for the likes of Serena Williams, Abby Wambach, Simone Biles, and more.” —espnW

Based on the Instagram account @TheUnsungHeroines, a celebration of the pioneering, forgotten female athletes of the twentieth century that features rarely seen photos and new interviews with past and present game changers including Abby Wambach and Cari Champion.

Two years ago, filmmaker Molly Schiot began the Instagram account @TheUnsungHeroines, posting a photo each day of a female athlete who had changed the face of sports around the globe in the pre-Title IX age. These women paved the way for Serena Williams, Carli Lloyd, and Lindsey Vonn, yet few today know who they are. Slowly but surely, the account gained a following, and the result is Game Changers, a beautifully illustrated collection of these trailblazers’ rarely-before-seen photos and stories.

Featuring icons Althea Gibson and Wyomia Tyus, complete unknowns Trudy Beck and Conchita Cintron, policymaker Margaret Dunkle, sportswriter Lisa Olson, and many more, Game Changers gives these “founding mothers” the attention and recognition they deserve, and features critical conversations between past and present gamechangers—including former US Women’s National Soccer Team captain Abby Wambach and SportsCenter anchor Cari Champion—about what it means to be a woman on and off the field. Inspiring, empowering, and unforgettable, Game Changers is the perfect gift for anyone who has a love of the game.
This is such an amazing book! I have bought multiple copies to give as gifts to the female athletes in our lives, and everyone who has received it has raved about how much they like this book. It's truly inspirational for young female athletes to learn about the trailblazers who have come before them and paved the way for them to be able to play sports without prejudice--which many of these women faced in their sport--just for being a woman. The women featured in this book are fierce and they are excellent role models for young girls today. I was one of the first in a generation of Title IX kids, and so much has changed since I played sports as a young child. I think it is important for girls today to understand the sacrifice it took for women to play sports not all that long ago, and appreciate what these women did to make it easier for the generations that followed. It also allows younger girls to dream big, knowing women before them did some pretty amazing things.

My daughter actually got to meet one of the women featured in this book, and she never would have known who she was if she hadn't read the book. My daughter played against an ice hockey team that Manon Rhéaume coaches. Manon was the first and only woman ever to play in the NHL--a pretty amazing feat! After the game, my daughter came up to me and was very excited and started telling me that the "coach from the other team" had played in the NHL. When I asked her who it was and how she knew that, she told me she remembered her from reading about her in this book.

This would be a great read for boys as well, but a must read for girls and younger women.

This book is phenomenal. It will open your mind and your heart to the incredible legacy of powerful, resilient, and dignified women that have come before us. Now, more than ever, we have a responsibility to share these images and stories, to build a commonly held history of women's achievements in athletics and everything else.

Molly Schiot has written these stories in clear and accessible vignettes and paired them with AMAZING PHOTOS. It is a total joy to read and has already started some really fun conversations at work. Young athletes, old athletes, women, men, and everyone in between will find moments of awe and inspiration in this book.

This well-written and informative book is a "must read", especially for parents with daughters. I learned about so many courageous women athletes who are truly heroines and game changers. Many of these women I had never heard of, such as Conchita Cintron, the bullfighter. I have four sons, three of whom are parents of daughters. Each son will get a copy to share with his girls!

Thoughtful and insightful...Grew up into sports in the 60's..loved reading about my swimming heroes and hearing about the unsung women who were pursuing their dreams. Many had single handedly excelled when there were no role models to emulate..Great examples of women who persevered and triumphed!

I read it and then I donated it to a local school library. Our children-both girls and boys- can only benefit from knowing more of our collective history.
Even just looking through the photographs gives a sense of the many, often unsung, women who have achieved much in athletics over the decades.

This book should be in libraries and bookshelves everywhere. Great gift for anyone, too! As a father who has a young daughter, I clearly recognize the need for girls and young women to have strong role models, to provide inspiration and help empower them. Game Changers is full of amazingly talented people who did what they love to do and -- with this book -- are finally getting some of the recognition they have long deserved.

Bought for middle school granddaughter, and learned a lot from reading it myself.

A great book but ordered for a present. First arrived with obvious signs of wear and tear on the spine and the book looked at if it had been stored in damp conditions as the pages did not lie flat. Edges of spine worn. As ordered for a present I re-ordered. Second copy exactly the same. If you are buying for yourself then fine, looks like a brilliant and fascinating read. But as a present - be warned it will look as if you have read it already and are giving a second hand copy. Not what I expect for the money.
