Lots of great points to embrace in life whether you public speak or not. Easy to read chapters and headliners. Goyder points out that many of the principles are as old as the Roman Empire...tried and true principles of effective communication. I think reading this book help's one not only be more aware of one's own communication style but that of others too. You'll start to notice how many seasoned, successful politicians employ these very techniques. A general principle that weaves through this book is one of slowing down one's brain and breathing - as in yoga or meditation, be clear in your intention (thoughts), and then express those thoughts in as simple a manner as possible. The analogy comes to mind of giving a lost out-of-towner directions and they have nothing to write it down, only their memory. You want to keep it simple, you want them to remember, you want to help them get from A to B. This book provides the principles, the techniques and the suggestions to begin that journey to Gravitas, the power of confidence.
I was first made aware of Caroline Goyder when I read her piece on CNN entitled, "What ancient Romans can teach you about leadership." I was immediately drawn in by her words and assigned the book to my team as part of our leadership reading series. It was by far one of our favorite books. You can tell that Caroline knows her craft and is a great teacher and writer. She introduces the reader to some fairly sophisticated topics in concise and easily digestible pieces. I will continue to use this book as a reference while building my own personal as well as professional brand. The best thing about Gravitas is that anyone can pick it up, read her wisdom and apply immediately. If you feel stuck and want to recharge your brand, then Gravitas is a must read.
I love this book because it actually teaches a new concept, Gravitas. The book is full little golden nuggets of wisdom. Especially, Part Two: Gravitas in Action was very insightful for me giving many practical and readily actionable advice. Be sure to check out Caroline's TEDx talk and see Gravitas in action [...]
Career's saver book. I was literally able to get a job of my dreams by applying the simple techniques taught in this book.
Speech is physical and it has a lot to do with inner confidence. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his speeches and wants to be heard when speaking.
This book has helped me in so many ways. So thankful the writer put this book filled with actionable advice together. A great resource for anyone looking to grow their softer skills.
Good book on a topic that is rarely discussed. Lots of good stories and sound advice.
There were many helpful tips to become a better communicator and convey confidence during presentations. As someone who has been active in Toastmasters International, I can attest to much of the advice given in this book. It's an excellent read
Lots of good information to think about and consider. The book itself drags. I just wound up jumping around to topics I thought would help me and skimming it.
I picked this book up in Waterstones one afternoon. It grabbed my attention because improving gravitas sounded pretty appealing, especially as i had to prepare for a best man speech and some work related public speaking. I'm not low on confidence by any means but i wanted to optimise the way i carry myself generally and public speaking has always been a weak point. I had some horrible moments at school and uni when i just completely choked. i tend to ramble, mumble and read from a sheet.
This book get's straight to the point, teaching you exercises to improve your confidence and gravitas immediately, gradually building up to a level where i personally felt confident to deliver the speech. Learning the psychology helped me with my nerves because it made me more aware of what was going wrong, why it was going wrong and how to rectify it. I like the quotes from famous public speakers and you soon begin to understand that gravitas is something that can learned, like those speakers themselves have been taught.
This book is very well written because i get bored easily and it kept me engaged. Every time i read a chapter i learned something new. Another thing i like about the book is that it's not just preparing you for a speech, it's arming you with the life skills to communicate with people more effectively and leave a lasting impression. I can honestly say, have changed my mindset and given me greater impetus. If you read one book this year, Gravitas would be my personal recommendation.
I have had a tumultuous relationship with public speaking, and back in January had an awful experience which made me want quit my job and hide under my duvet forever.
I then got told I had to present to all staff - 300 people, I read this book in preparation and took the advice. I delivered the talk yesterday and haven’t stopped receiving compliments from the audience since. People I’ve never met before thanking me and saying how helpful it was. It was a talk to internal staff talking about what I do and how we can work together, delivering that talk has transformed my working environment, people are coming forward suggesting ways we can work together.
I can’t quite believe how well it has been received.
This book has changed everything for me!
Feeling stuck in a rut at work, I wanted to develop skills that could take me onwards and upwards without feeling inauthentic. This books has given me an absolute wealth of practical ideas, I will come back to it again and again.
Whilst I have a strong academic background I was keen to ensure that I projected the right image during presentations and in board meetings. Caroline's book was a revelation, providing a great mix of quotes, advice and exercises. After reading just the first chapter I was complimented on my new presentation skills which resulted in me being awarded a global award. Caroline is a big believer that we all have Gravitas inside us and I cannot thank her enough for helping me to develop mine.
This is a gem of book. It explains Gravitas in historical and modern contexts.
It clearly explains the seven principles and provides simple exercises to master each one. That is followed by a toolkit that provides examples of how to use the techniques in different situations.
I use it at work to remove the ‘fourth walls’ that exist between teams and business departments. I use it personally to make video voice-overs.
Gravitas is a book that I found it very enlightening and useful. What I liked most about it was how specific the author was when it came to practical strategies to become a speaker with presence. This is by far one of the best books I have come across. If you are looking for a quick and effective way to improve your communication skills then look no further, this book is for you. One thing every reader needs to bear in mind: you must put into practice what you will learn in this book. Practice what you will read until you no longer need to be reminded the steps.
I really liked this book. It was very useful to me. I always felt I could do with presenting myself better when talking with someone or an audience.
The book gave me resonating advice. Caroline offers great advice to get that inner confidence.
The seven principles are very useful advice. I recommend this book to others to are looking for more effective ways of communicating with others.
This is such an important book – it feels like a part of a missing manual for “How to be a person”. I am still working through it, but I already feel positive changes.
It is very practical and entertaining; it is a combination of personal experiences, professional work with clients and insights from neuroscience; It challenges you to work on yourself and work hard, but reminds you to be always patient and kind to yourself.
Altogether – such a powerful helper and guide for life. I even have it in three formats – as an ebook, in print and as audio, totally worth it.
Caroline Goyder's book is an absolute must for anyone who wants to find their gravitas. I have recommended it to friends and colleagues many times now. What I really like, is it's extremely easy to just pick up and read for a few hours or a few minutes. It's interesting and very practical, I often have a quick 'reminder read' just before important meetings or situations. It's witty, warm and paints pictures in the mind of how to think, act and carry oneself in different situations.

A must have for anyone either learning or honing communication skills across the board. Caroline delivers powerful lessons within every chapter, lessons that can be referenced again and again leading up to any 'big day'. The butterflies we all get when public speaking fly in unison with new found wings of confidence. Let them fly.
Excellent, well written book, full of practical and easily applied techniques. Our senior management team studied this book together and it's really improved our communications.
I highly recommend this book. Caroline's approach is pragmatic, logical and backed up by her undeniable expertise in delivering results for clients who intend to learn to communicate with confidence, influence and authority. This book is highly effective at helping the reader learn these skills.
Possibly the best book I've ever read on communication skills and their practical application. Highly recommend that you read this if you're looking to improve your speaking and grow your influence
Full of really useful techniques and ways of thinking. Many of the theories and exercises will stay with me forever.
