On a remote island in the Canadian Arctic, researchers discover the wreckage of a mysterious World War II-era aircraft, a discovery that forces the Russian Federation into a shocking admission. The unmarked plane is a Soviet strategic bomber that disappeared with its crew more than fifty years ago while carrying two metric tons of weaponized anthrax.

Desperate to prevent a political and diplomatic firestorm, the U.S. president dispatches a Covert-One team led by Lieutenant Colonel Jon Smith to the crash site. But others have reached the frigid, windswept island first, including an international arms dealer and his crew of vicious mercenaries. As for the Russians, they are lying: a second, even deadlier secret rests within the hulk of the lost bomber, a secret the Russians are willing to kill to protect. Trapped in a polar wilderness, Smith and his team find themselves fighting a savage war on two front--against an enemy they can see and another hiding within their own ranks.
It is a great adventure book written in a classic style where good guys are good, bad guys are bad and the main villain is a former Soviet Union. All protagonists are colorful but not overcomplicated. The women could be a cold blooded killers and charming at the same time. The men are strong, heroic, athletic but also sensitive. The landscapes are cold and scary. The heroes come out miraculously unscathed from all life threatening situations. And good will always prevail. In terms of believability this book is closer to James Bond or Charlie Angels movies than to T. Clancy books. If you look for plot originality or psychological depths look somewhere else.
So what makes it special and such fun to read? It is all about how it is written. It is Ludlum (and J. H. Cobb) at his best when plot moves smoothly, pacing is perfect and you hardly can take your eyes off the pages. After recently reading several aspiring new authors this book was like a breath of fresh air to me. It reminded me how good books should be written.

As a Covert One fan, I knocked another great read off the list! I really enjoyed this one because of the story, the close calls, the comebacks, the strategies and the finish. This one had it all and I was sad to get to the end. On to the next!

Don't know what more superlatives you can say. Great story. Like the addition of Valerie the mix. Also the little addition of Randi to the team eventually is going to come as a great surprise to Jon. Can't wait to start next one. Great story!!!!

Flows, goes and moves your attention from character to character, keeping interests of the mind of what will happen next. Lots of good imagination is evolved throughout the seemingly never ending story.
If you like Mr Ludlum's work as I have over the years your sure to enjoy reading adventure, it sure captured mine!!

I have read many books by Ludlum, but I think this is the most exciting I have encountered. From page one it captured my attention and enjoyment and was a mystery all the way to the end. THE ARCTIC EVENT revolved around a plot that I can truly envision actually happening in today's world. One reason I always prefer Robert Luclum's books is that in addition to their believability and excitement, he uses a high level of vocabulary suitable to an educated mind. This vocabulary enhances my thinking.

Haven't not read one his books gor awhile. Great as always. Really good as usual. Not easy at all to figure out who will make it and who won't. Interesting subject gor a book and makes you wonder if something like that is possible.

Yet another great adventure tale from the writers of the Covert One series. Filled with all the action and intrigue you'd expect from John's world tripping life as a secret agent for Covert One. This time he and a team are off to the Arctic to recover a downed plane filled with lethal biotoxin before a group of terrorists gets to it first. Good fun! A very effective readling of the material and it arrived in great condition. who could ask for more. :o)

Covert One has been a hit and miss series of adventures featuring Colonel John Smith since the late, great thriller writer Robert Ludlum created the series in 2000.The Arctic Event is a return to form under the new authorship of James Cobb.
This is an exciting story with a very good plotline and enjoyable characters. In the Ludlum tradition the action is often and very fast paced. This novel is almost entirely set in one location..the arctic and often reminded me of a good early Alistair Maclean yarn, with its intrigue and unseen enemies. So much better than the awful post Ludlum Bourne series.
