Female Force: Oprah Winfrey
Female Force: Oprah Winfrey
Oprah has always been one of my heroes and I'm so glad to find this Female Force graphix biography on this wonderful, caring, intelligent, lively, spirited, sensitive, dynamic lady's life.

This book does a fine job detailing Oprah's remarkable life from her toddler days on the farm with her grandmum, Hattie Mae Lee to her difficult years with her mum and the poverty and abuse Oprah had to endure then her teen years with her dad and her stepmum Zelma.

The only thing I can fault a bit is the pictures of Oprah as a child made her appear to have been a large child and one illustration of her at fourteen made her appear too large-breasted.

Oprah had actually been a very small, very skinny, rather short girl who blossomed late in her teens.

But that small flaw aside, it was a great read and the illustrations of her as an adult were mostly spot on.

I love reading about this wonderful lady and I love that this bio captured most of her life and with great accuracy.
Great Again: How to Fix Our Crippled America
Great Again: How to Fix Our Crippled America
"I always think big. I start with a plan to build the biggest, the most beautiful, and the highest-quality projects. If you don't begin with big dreams, you can never fulfill them." (Donald Trump, "Great Again: How to Fix Our Crippled America" [Formerly titled Crippled America], Page 166)

The title of this book "Crippled America" had me thinking that this book was going to be a pessimistic view of America and all that is wrong with it. I was wrong. It ended up being answers to the problems facing America. Everything from tax reform, immigration reform, health care reform, "Draining the Swamp" in Washington, bringing back American jobs, improving the economy...Trump knows the issues facing America and thinks he has the answers to fixing them. As president, he now has that opportunity to implement what he wills. He shares what his plans are in this book.

I hear people calling Trump a bigot, racist, etc.; however, I have read every single book that this man has written and not once did I read anything that would cause someone to think these terrible things spoken about him. I think there are some media organizations, special interest groups, lobbyists and of course the Democratic Party who are trying to make Trump look bad to make themselves look better and to hinder the plans he has to make America Great Again. Thankfully, this election proves that Americans are smart and can see past all the biases of the polling and the news. I commend the people of the United States for using their head and their heart and discerning what is best for the American people and not being influenced by these groups. Congrats from a Canadian on electing a person who I believe will shape America for the better. Despite what you hear from some of our Canadian news agencies, some Canadians are very glad to welcome Trump as the now president of the United States.
Candide
Candide
NOTE: Due to difficulties in posting this review, until it is completely updated the full text of the review, with links, can be found in the comments section directly below. I apologize for this but have been having an unusually difficult time in getting this review to post. This note will be removed once the review is finalized and posted in final form.

This review will address the newly issued Kindle edition of Candide that has been released by Open Road Media as well as give an overview of editions of Candide available for the Kindle and available on Amazon.

Many Kindle versions of well-known classic books are available. For books available in the public domain, as is the case for Candide, oftentimes these Kindle versions are available for free or for very low price.

Some of these Kindle editions are of low quality and have various issues that make them less desirable for those who like to read classics on their Kindles. When I am looking for a classic book to purchase for my Kindle, it is usually a minor research project to determine which one I think will be the 'best' for my reading, and sometimes I end up purchasing more than one version in order to get one that is well presented and formatted for the Kindle.

This is a relatively short book, normally about 100 pages in printed form, and not a difficult read. This Kindle edition is well produced, the publishers website claims that it has been professionally proofread, and I have detected no errors myself (such as often appear in Kindle books which have been scanned and published without careful check).

This Open Road Media version of Candide appears to be the most common version offered on Kindle and uses the translation by Philip Little (see note below) which was originally published by Modern Library in 1918 and is public domain and readily available online (see for example Project Gutenberg link below). It includes the following:

- short introduction written by the translator Philip Littell
- complete text of Candide (presumably also translated by Philip Littell)
- table of contents is included and functions properly, with book 'locations' indicated but not page numbers

It does not include footnotes, which the Gutenberg Library (online) version of Candide does include (see comments section below for link to the Gutenberg Library website). The two versions are otherwise identical as far as I can tell, and the Gutenberg Library version indicates where edits have been made in order to correct typos, and those corrections have all also been included in this Open Road Media version.

(I note that this Kindle edition does not indicate which translation is used, nor does the Open Road media website provide that information, however it does show Philip Littell as the author of the introduction and several references I've found also indicate Littell is the translator. However, the NY Public Library article on Candide (see link in comments below) refers to this as an anonymous translation, saying "NYPL is using the most widely available e-text of the book, from the anonymous translation published by the Modern Library in 1918, available on Project Gutenberg").

Candide has been well reviewed on Amazon and is available in many different editions, both for the Kindle and in print. The listings on Amazon with the greatest number of reviews are listed below. I would refer to these listings and the accompanying reviews for discussion of the book itself, which is generally regarded as a major classic and which has been included on many lists of 'best' or 'most influential classic novels:

Marvel Men's Civil War Captain America Full Vinyl Mask, Multi, One Size
Marvel Men's Civil War Captain America Full Vinyl Mask, Multi, One Size
I read the reviews and all noted the mask was very large so I was not shocked when it arrived. Others comments on it being deformed and they could not fix the deformation owing to the size. Well, I noted these facts but I came up with what I think is a good fix for both problems. The fix: I bought velcro tabs (1 in x in squares) and super glued them inside the back of the helmet about 1/2 inch to an inch at the base on either side of the center. Once dried I simply squeezed the back tabs together and it pinched in to make a tighter fit (basically measure how much pinch you would need to make a tight fit). I then held it from the pinch and slid it on. Because it was tight, there was very little deformation of any kind and it fit well on my face. Obviously from the back there is a fold but I was not concerned with how the back of my head looked like. For the price it is a great prop in my opinion.
Tomb Of Ligeia
Tomb Of Ligeia
"The Tomb of Ligeia" is a slow-paced yet highly atmospheric adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Ligeia", starring Vincent Price as the tormented and not quite stable Verden Fell, who is haunted by the spirit of his deceased first wife, and whose second marriage to beautiful Rowena (Elizabeth Shepherd) is similarly haunted by this spirit. Fell is reminded again and again (and hence his torment and inability to move on) by his late wife's disembodied voice that she will live on even after death and she will always remain his wife. The story is highly steeped in atmosphere, and is both a horror story and psychological drama as viewers witness Fell's descent into madness.

What makes this worthwhile in the classic canon of horror movies is the excellent acting by both Price and Shepherd (in a dual role) as well as the outdoor shots (which was uncommon for horror movies back then) amidst the scenic English countryside. It is slow going though and no real scares- more of sinister atmosphere that is effectively conveyed.

"An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe" is a retelling of four Poe stories starring Vincent Price - in "The Tell Tale Heart", "The Sphinx", "The Cask of Amontillado", and "The Pit and the Pendulum" (my favorite of the four). Price delivers credible performances in all four stories. For the price of this DVD, this is an excellent purchase, especially for fans of Poe and Price!
Annie's Homegrown White Cheddar Microwavable Mac & Cheese, 10.7 oz, 5 ct
Annie's Homegrown White Cheddar Microwavable Mac & Cheese, 10.7 oz, 5 ct
I see that someone using my name is advocating Annie's Shells and White Cheddar Cheese!

This is way better. Let's QUICKLY go over the advantages; I know you have better things to do:

1. This is macaroni, not "shells." When you want "macaroni and cheese," do you ask for "shells and cheese?" Not likely.

2. The cheese is yellow, not white. Maybe if you like white chocolate over brown chocolate, you'll go for the other kind. In my book, this cheese should be yellow. Enough said.

OK, so it's not completely organic. It's still natural and tastes good. AND--this is microwaveable!

Res Ipsa Loquitur. ("The thing speaks for itself, already!")

Made with Certified Organic Pasta (Organic Durum Semolina, Water), Cheddar Cheese (Cultured Pasteurized Milk, Salt, Enzymes), Whey, Dry Buttermilk, Butter (Cream, Salt), Salt, Corn Starch, Extractives of Annatto, Beta Carotene. Allergens are as follows: Wheat, Milk, Corn.

I am a purist, and proud of it!
Powder Blue
Powder Blue
Very good film. A character driven, story driven and seamless presentation of four (or five) people's struggle with loneliness, depression, despair and dysmorphia. Jessica Biel is an underrated actress. This movie is uplifted by Biel's intensity in this role. Someone mentioned that this is a "campy" movie, and that is most apparent in the scene at the hospital with her terminal son's doctor, but somehow it doesn't detract and sort of lightens the mood of the film a bit. Her athleticism is on display too as a pole dancer. She's got skills. Otherwise, this is a somber and dark themed movie.

"Powder Blue" is about people (mostly sinners) struggling to recover from loss of a loved one - the ephemeral nature of life and happiness. Clearly, one can't move forward, while clinging to a dead past. Move on with life, you're not dead yet.

Biel's made a couple of great film choices where she plays strong independent women (The Tall Man and Bleeding Heart). She was good as a mother who commits a seemingly senseless murder in The Sinner (series). Although, this is probably meant to be an ensemble piece, other actors seem to play a supporting role. She definitely held your attention. What is it with Forrest Whitaker and transvestites? It felt at times like a reprise of his role in The Crying Game. Sanaa Latham was in a cameo role as his dead wife. She looked gorgeous, as usual. Ray Liotta played another tortured soul searching for redemption. A lot of interesting characters and cameos from Patrick Swayze, Khris Khristopherson, and Eddie Redmayne was likable in the role of the shy and asthmatic young mortician.
Caja de regalo colección Rondnoir
Caja de regalo colección Rondnoir
Forget a Mother-in-law's birthday? Miss your wife's anniversary? What about trying to score some brownie points for the next time you make a mistake?

This is a good option. It isn't too expensive or large, but still big enough that it shows you didn't just run to Wally World to try to smooth things out.

Key things to consider about this purchase:
1. Is the female in your life that you have angered allergic to chocolate or nuts? If so, avoid this and find another way to dig out of that hole you are in.

2. Does the female in your life hate chocolate? See above.

3. Did you get in a fight over how an outfit looks, or anything about her looks? Tread lightly here. You don't want to find out you aren't supportive of a diet or being healthy or another landmine you might step on.

4. Are you still married? If not, this will not fix a problem that large.

Good luck... and do try giving this before you actually do something stupid. Believe it or not people are much happier with chocolate in their mouth (most of the time).
Twizzlers Fresa Twists 16 oz
Twizzlers Fresa Twists 16 oz
I don't care if this was a coincidence but my Twizzlers arrived the day before my friend's music competition. On the day, I whipped these bad boys out and two hours later, half of the Twizzlers had disappeared, and I thought to myself 'thank goodness I ordered two'. Twizzlers were passed around, joy was spread, and a couple tears were even shed. Thanks to the excellent packaging and timely arrival, the precious cargo arrived unharmed and gorgeous and it even made my friend's day.
