Life on the Mississippi (Dover Thrift Editions)
Life on the Mississippi (Dover Thrift Editions)
This book is written in Mark Twain's illimitable and distinctive style and is packed with anecdotes and facts about the river, both at the time he was writing and previously.

It is a fascinating portrait of life on a steamboat and of the River itself at that time and since Mark Twain had been a licensed pilot on the Mississippi, it is a book written by someone who knows his subject. (His pen-name of Mark Twain was taken from the leadsman's calling out the depth of 'two fathoms').

The passages about his apprenticeship when learning his trade as a river pilot are among the most fascinating, but the many historical facts which he also incorporates into the book also make extremely interesting reading.

The river is several thousand miles long, and when the young Mark Twain said to his instructor, the senior pilot Horace Bixby, "but surely you don't expect me to know ALL the landmarks all along the river?", his mentor replied, "Son, I don't EXPECT you to know them, you MUST know them". For at that time and without any modern technical aids, or even electricity for nighttime travel, navigation of the river could prove extremely dangerous.

One of the many fascinating facts about this river was its habit of continually changing course, or "cutting through" a bend - sometimes marooning a former riverside town several miles inland, and even putting it into another state or county entirely.

The author describes the river as being 4000 miles long. But the Internet gives a number of answers as to length, varying from 3,710 miles long to 2,550 miles - quite a difference! But whoever is right, it is certainly a very long river, (among the very longest in the world), and all agree that at its widest it is seven miles wide and winds its way through no fewer than 10 US states.

I would thoroughly recommend this book as a most informative read, but crucially, it is written not in a dry and dusty manner, but in a delightfully informal and racy style, and is packed with stories, anecdotes and historical facts, making it extremely readable.
Introvert Leaders That Run The World: 16 Reasons Why Introvert People Lead in Business, Politics, Arts, Science & Technology (Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, ... quiet (Motivation, excellence, Success)
Introvert Leaders That Run The World: 16 Reasons Why Introvert People Lead in Business, Politics, Arts, Science & Technology (Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, ... quiet (Motivation, excellence, Success)
Excellent book! This book is a short research into what is it that makes introverts so successful everywhere from business to movies and from music to politics. One of the most common assumptions is that introverts can’t be good leaders, having neither the natural talent nor the desire for leadership. And while it is true that more introverted types might not jump at the chance to lead a team, organization, or movement, circumstances can place them there regardless.
In previous time introverts were treated as personality trait but at present, in the era of ICT introversion is rectified as a mental disorder. Introversion is a great barrier on the way of success in life where the internet made the world smaller and brought the people closer.
Aditya Sawdekar did well writing the book very easy to understand. He focused on the basic reasons behind the introversion such as pre-decision how much engage in social setting, taking calculated risk, extreme personality trait, calmly dealing with adversity, non-offensive and love for being alone etc.
This book is for anyone who wants to find deeper meaning in their lives, excel or transform personalities for betterment of life.
Today and Tomorrow - Special Edition of Ford's 1926 Classic
Today and Tomorrow - Special Edition of Ford's 1926 Classic
I have been working in the field of 'lean' process improvement for a few years now. Like many other I was led to believe that it all started in Japan in the 1950's. Wrong! The roots of the Toyota Production System were in the Ford Production System - so why isn't this fact broadcast by the very business academics and 'lean consultants' who peddle their wares in the marketplace? Why isn't this book required reading for EVERY employee, employer and MBA student? Perhaps because Henry Ford achieved his success without the help of legal and financial departments full of expensive overhead - corporate lawyers and accountants! In fact he actively eliminated them from his businesses! Ford's dream was to create a form of transport that anyone could afford - for example the workers in his factories - because this would free people from a hand-to-mouth existence and release their time to reinvest in developing themselves and supporting their families and communities. Ford was a social engineer as much as a mechanical and process engineer - his goal was to reduce poverty. To achieve his vision Ford focussed on the process of manufacture; he empowered employees by creating a new organisational model - a context that insisted on industry, innovation and creativity from everyone. Contrary to the stories told later, he paid all workers a higher than average minimum wage; he only allowed employees to work 8 hours per day; and he expected a good day's work in return for a fair day's wage. Ford insisted on discipline and set clear expectations. Only those prepared to work in this way were welcome: trade unions were not required because the vision of the employer and employee were aligned. In reading the account of his philosphy in his own words I became aware of how much the stories I had heard of Henry Ford had been distorted; I was struck by how relevant the lessons are today; and I felt annoyed that it has taken me so long to discover this fascinating book! So I'm doing my bit to spread the word! Simon Dodds
Brown Girl, Brownstones
Brown Girl, Brownstones
Despite the fact that I had read almost every book in my high school library ...read secondary grammar school in the UK, by the time I left, I did not find this book until I was an undergraduate at 19 at Bristol U.
As a child of a bajan mother and a biafran father it spoke to many of my questions about identity as a Bajarian born in Britain, ntyen raised in Lagos,Enugu Umahia and Shepherd's Bush ! As the eldest of four siblings , I understood the fierce pride and love with which my mother carried us solo into our lives ,following our separation from our father during and after the Biafran war.
I love Paule Marshall's rich layered complex writing and the many places in which both Silla, the mother character and Selena, the young protaganists stories echo my own. The discovery of racism and its impact on Selena is one of the most poignant I have ever read. I now llive and work in and around present day Fulton St and Brooklyn so that too makes me love the book.

I am sharing this novel with my husband and my teenage daughter that they may better understand the kind of forces that shaped me.
Ford Dynasty: A Photographic History (MI) (Images of Motoring)
Ford Dynasty: A Photographic History (MI) (Images of Motoring)
Ford Dynasty is another volume in the "Images of Motoring" series. These little photographic histories are 127 pages long, with every page filled with archival black and white photos. This book cannot possibly be an in depth history of a firm as large and complex as the Ford empire but the photos used here are interesting and informative, dealing with everything from the cars to the factories to the people who build the cars to the people who own and run the companies. For its price this is an worthwhile book. I don't think that a Ford expert would learn many new facts from this volume but a number of the photos might be unfamiliar to such a specialist. The generalist car fan will probably enjoy the photos and their informative captions and won't begrudge the very reasonable cost of the book. I enjoyed it along with its companion volumes on Chrysler and General Motors.
An Item of Member's Mark Black T-Shirt Carryout Bags (1,000 ct.) - Pack of 1 - Bulk Disc
An Item of Member's Mark Black T-Shirt Carryout Bags (1,000 ct.) - Pack of 1 - Bulk Disc
Potential buyers should be aware - approx. halfway through this order of 1000 bags, a problem emerged, in that one or both handles were deformed so they were very thin and weak and just broke or tore off when I went to tie the handles together. I would estimate somewhere around 1/3 or maybe somewhat less, of the bags had this defect. Very annoying. I would have to tape the bag or use another bag (one that wasn’t deformed) so double-bag it.

I feel pretty sure the seller had to know he/she was selling “seconds”, and some deceit was involved in not making this clear. I note as of today, these bags are “currently unavailable” from this seller. I decided to give the bags one more try (different seller) because in the past I have used them without this problem. Maybe I will get lucky.

I like these bags a lot. I’ve been buying this type of “t-shirt” bag for decades for animal care cleaning proposes, but all the white kind till I discovered these.

I decided to try them with the idea they might be a hair thicker than the white kind that I have to be so paranoid about over filling. I cant prove it but in use, they do seem sturdier.

(The idea black might be thicker comes from being told 100 years ago that black cars get an extra coat of paint so are a bit more rust resistant.)

One thing I didn’t really notice till they were in use halfway through the first box is that they are substantially bigger than the white bags. They are several inches taller just enough to be a lot more accommodating to what I use them for. I haven’t checked if they are any bigger width-wise.

Pretty sure they are somewhat thicker though, in spite of that hare brained factoid, for two reasons. First, you cant see the contents like you can with the white bags. For some unknown reason , I really like this feature although I don’t throw anything away that I need to be secretive about. I just feel neater and cleaner with a trash can full of these anonymous, clean looking black bags than I did with white bags displaying my sins of waste or non-recycling or whatever (to the birds at the dump I guess)...

Second, they actually are quite a bit more tear resistant than the white kind as far as just punctures and accidental rips. As far as holding more, I do put more in them but gingerly. I don’t push it. But bulky-light stuff, definitely. Cat litter, not so much! A burst at the bottom would be much more upsetting in that case. ...

When first shopping Amazon for these I found them mostly to be ridiculously more expensive than the white bags for no apparent reason. But this particular kind was either the same or close in price. So I can’t explain the price thing. I have stuck with these so far (3 orders or thereabouts).

New Iron man Infinity Gauntlet for Kids, Iron Man Glove LED with Removable Magnet Infinity Stones-3 Flash mode. (Kids)
This is a gift for grandson. Being out of the loop on stuff my daughter told me he wanted one for Christmas. I looked it up and was waffling on the purchase based on some of the reviews. But realizing some people will outrageously complain about anything I placed the order. It arrived 3 weeks before the expected date. It was well packaged for transit and is a wonderful toy. All the jewels worked and adhered to the glove while flinging my arm around. I am sooo glad I made the purchase. It’s a great toy and Grammy will be a hero. WooHoo
Shall we Tell the President? Heron Edition
Shall we Tell the President? Heron Edition
This book, whilst being a good read which kept me up later than is reasonable, was not at all what I was expecting. Having recently read The Clifton Chronicles, followed by Kane and Abel then the Prodigal Daughter, I fully expected Shall We Tell the President to be another epic, family type saga. This was, however, more a crime thriller, 'whodunnit' type story - not the genre I would ever knowingly choose. That said, it was a good pager turner even if the story was slightly far fetched in places. We see very little of Florentyna Kane in this, so don't pick it up expecting it to be 'Part 3'!
Feathers in the Fire
Feathers in the Fire
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely one of her best, filled with unexpected twists, turns & somersaults!
What an amazing & prolific author was Catherine Cookson. Every so often I return to her books, mostly when I’m feeling depressed & bored by the current slew of mostly very ordinary Authors writing now.
Be wary of Goodreads reviewers. The books some of them review are given to them free & very rarely do they give a bad one. Some of the books I’ve purchased on their opinions have been total rubbish so you have to ask yourself if they’ve ever read any really great books.
Privileged Conversation
Privileged Conversation
Plot in a nutshell: Dr. David Chapman has an affair with Kate the dancer. A stalker begins to stalk Kate. Problems from Kate's past continue to haunt her. David tries to help Kate. Stalker, affair, and Kate's past all meet in the end.
I think I understand the point Hunter was trying to make, but, just like in his novel Criminal Conversation, he fails to adequately portray the emotions involved in an affair. He leaves many unanswered questions. David appears to be in a good marriage with wife Helen, but Hunter shows no guilt on David's part. He shows David wanting to stop the affair because it is inherently wrong, not because he still loves his wife.
I think the ending somewhat explains why we are never made to fill sorry for Helen or angry at David for having the affair. Still, the ease at which a man can fall into an affair and then begin to lie about it while still supposedly loving his wife makes this book less than it could be.
The ending of the book also makes you think differently about some of the actions of the characters. David could have done a lot of things to change the fate of some of the characters and to make his fate more enjoyable.
This book is short and easy to read. Its not that bad if you are interested in the affair/sex/stalker genre.
Tarzan and the Lost City
Tarzan and the Lost City
Carl Schenkel's 1998 production of "Tarzan and the Lost City" deserves kudos for attempting to recreate the ambiance of the Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'Tarzan' novels, setting it in the past, and introducing Tarzan (Casper Van Dien) in formal attire, celebrating his impending nuptials with Jane Porter (Jane March). An even nicer touch follows, as the animals of Tarzan's African home send him a telepathic 'SOS', forcing him to postpone the wedding, and race back to the jungle. All this plays out promisingly, yet the film soon loses focus, with Tarzan ultimately drifting into a supporting role in his own film (the Witchdoctor of Opar becoming the decisive hero), and Jane simply getting in the way, more a naive adolescent than a strong, sexy, loving partner to the Jungle Lord. This change of direction is rather startling, and throws the entire film off-kilter!

Casper Van Dien, after a good initial impression, is disappointing as Tarzan; his physique is good, but he is short, and looks more like a frat boy than a truly dangerous predator. Jane March, as I said, lacks maturity as Jane; I'd be surprised if the 'actual' Tarzan would pick a partner so superficial. The film's villain, Nigel Ravens (Steven Waddington) is completely miscast; a Tarzan villain must be larger than life, and a worthy adversary; Waddington looks like a CPA on holiday, and wouldn't be much of threat to Spongebob! Bravo for Winston Ntshona, however; it's truly nice to see an major African character not dumbed down into a stereotype.

"Tarzan and the Lost City" has moments worth watching, and it's obvious that there is a measure of respect for Edgar Rice Burroughs...but this isn't the 'live action' film Tarzan fans are waiting for!
Postcard Book: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Postcard Book: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
This is another of those postcard books which are A4 size and so have 4 cards to a page. It means there are some cards which have perforations on all three sides. I for one do not like sending cards with perforations so it means I have to spend a lot of time trimming them. That said, they aren't expensive and I find the illustrations all right.

Eda's Sugar Free Lemon Hard Candy, ONE POUND, individually wrapped, OU Parve, Uses Sorbitol, Low Sodium
I ordered these in lemon and in watermelon. The watermelon has not arrived yet so my comments are strictly about the lemon. These candies do not have a strong lemon flavor, which is unfortunate. In fact, the lemon is really only noticeable when you first taste the candy. But they DO help with dry mouth issues. A lot, actually. The downside is that they also cause extreme stomach pain, gas, and diarrhea. And it only took one to set that in motion. Unfortunately, the next day I had two more before I realized the candy was the cause of my severe discomfort. It's a shame, really, because now I have a pound of these expensive lemon candies and another pound of the equally expensive watermelon candies on the way and I am not comfortable using them. Can't give them to the grandkids either because... What grandmother would be that cruel?

Verizon Signal Booster 4G LTE Cell Phone Signal Booster FDD 700Mhz US Cellular Signal Booster Verizon obdator Band 13 High Gain Mobile Phone Signal Booster for Home
I've set up a lot of TV and radio antennas. I set up this product per the instructions, and it simply didn't work. For this, I used a phone app with a cell tower site map to identify tower locations near me, and the one my phone was locked onto, in order to point the outdoor antenna in the right direction. I even tried adjusting the outdoor antenna by gradually turning it in small increments and going back to check signal strength in between adjustments, to try to get a better signal. The best it would do was a slightly stronger signal a couple of times, but it was not stable. When I did get a stronger signal, I had to keep my phone within 6 feet of the indoor antenna, otherwise the phone would drop back down to the same signal level I had without the booster. Moving closer again did not re-boost the signal most of the time. I would not recommend this product.
LG Stylo 4 - 32GB - Prepaid Cell Phone - Carrier Locked - (Boost Mobile)
LG Stylo 4 - 32GB - Prepaid Cell Phone - Carrier Locked - (Boost Mobile)
This is a great phone as fas as hardware goes. It took a good 20 minutes after activation before I could actually use it, and LG has an exclusive bootloader lock on these phones, which can be unlocked via a rather complicated process. I was able to disable or remove almost all factory software on this model which is a nice bonus. In switching from a 16:9 aspect 5.5" amoled screen, to this 6.3" 18:9 aspect ratio, it gained absolutely no width and the on-screen keyboard is the exact same size with less of an edge on the phone. Tall phones are not good for pictures and media. So as great as this phone is, I truly disliked the size. It seems smaller than my 5.5" wide screen phone, and the edges are curled for 2.1mm. Not sure why but they designed the screen with a slight curve around the edge. This insures that no screen protector will ever fit the phone, and they do not fit. After a week Im ready to throw this phone out the window for its size and shape. Update: I threw this phone 5 times last night in utter frustration with the LG system software. The screen is actually strong and didnt break from overhead throws directly at a wall 5 times. i hate this phone and just bought a different brand phone which is 5 years older just to get away from the LG software. I find that every day this phone is doing its own thing instead of letting me use it. like taking several minutes to leave power save mode? We expect instant results and user overide is critical. If I press off and the phone doesnt shut off, that is a problem.. This phone disobeys direct user input continuously and the screen is curved and too close to the edge of the phone.

Balloon Decorating Strip Tape 50Ft for Arch Garland Streamer,1pcs Balloon Tying Tool,100 Dot Glue,32Ft Ribbon(50FT)…
I saw the idea of a balloon garland on Pinterest and wanted to one for my daughter’s tea party theme Birthday. I looked on YouTube for instructions on how to put one together, which was very helpful. So, the idea just came to me to look on Amazon to see if they had a kit, because Amazon sells basically everything! And, what did I find?!!! This kit for an amazing price! So, happy I purchased this because this kit made it so easy for a first timer to put this beautiful balloon garland together for my daughter’s party! If I didn’t know better myself after looking at this garland I would have thought a professional put this together. It took me about two hours to put about 150 balloons together and I still have more strip left for another garland! I was one happy mom for pulling this off!

This is the second one I bought and loved them both. First was the double, and the only draw back was over time thinning shears bent the bristles and despite trying to always put them in the same place half of the holder became unusable. This single model seems to have more space between bristles so fingers crossed I do not have this problem again. There is a risk/fear of it falling over so put in a secure corner or shelf.
$20 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
$20 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
I am a member of a VERY elite and exclusive organization. Yes ladies and gentlemen. I am a Discover Card "Member".

While visiting the Nintendo Eshop, I decided I wanted to get a new game: Super Mario Odyssey.

Clickety, click and off I go to their shopping cart.

Suddenly my heart sinks. My pulse rises. I can't believe my eyes. Nintendo does not accept Discover Card!

Rather than just closing my browser then and there. Grabbing my Switch and tossing it in the trash. I realized this must be some sort of mistake? Clearly. I felt discriminated against, personally attacked even.

Breathe for a moment. Settle down. There must be some way around this. My very first thought was Amazon.

Well, a moment later and I'm looking at these gift cards. My only worry was how long it would take to receive the codes. How would I receive the codes. Etc.

I proceeded. Bought a $50 and a $10 in order to buy the game in question. Went through Amazon checkout with my Discover Card in hand. Within one minute I had everything I needed to place my order with Nintendo. The codes for the eCash were provided instantly and I didn't have to wait at all.

Amazon saved the day, and I didn't have to resort to using a different card.

Fast transaction, instant codes, happy customer.
Nintendo Switch Lite - Yellow
Nintendo Switch Lite - Yellow
Basically a budget friendly Nintendo Switch that's meant to be more portable. Unlike the iphone 11 and iphone 11 Pro, Galaxy 10e and Galaxy 10, iphone XR and iphone X, etc it doesn't keep all features the same, just downgraded.

In fact like the Nintendo 2DS (compared to 3DS) it actually takes away some features.

If you already own a Nintendo Switch console, you can sync* or transfer from your profile/games/saves using your Nintendo account. Very simple; when you boot up system for first time it'll walk you through it step-by-step

*If you sync or link one account to multiple switch consoles, the non-main one has to verify every few hours to play downloaded games which can be a hassle if you don't have internet connection

Let's go through the list of changes:

1. Size, weight, portability

Overall size in general: The Switch Lite is basically the Original Switch (I'll be referring it to 'Switch' moving forward) but with one of the joy cons detached.

You think this will be more portable, but in practice from my personal experience it's not. If you consider size only
The Switch can detach joycons for better storage. Downside is that you must be aware where you put the screen and joycons and attach them later.

There is a difference if you pocket thing whole thing without detaching i guess

Seeing the smaller size, there may be more hand cramping involved if you have giant adult sized hands

Switch Lite is lighter in weight, but it's not a night-and-day difference. Not going to tell unless you have both side-by-side in each hand.

Bezels are colored which is nice. It's not black like on the Switch, so able to distinguish where the screen ends

2. No detachable joycons

Cannot detach joycons, making the logo snap/click sound clip that game trailers start off/ends with absolutely useless when referring to Switch line of systems in general.

As one singular unit, fused into the system; feels more solid in the hand compared to original

Downside is that it loses some functionality in some games

You are not able to split controllers to let a friend play

Some games that you can't play on Switch Lite out of the box (as of this review) are:
1-2 Switch
Fitness Boxing
Just Dance (Series)
Nintendo Labo (Series)
Nintendo Lano VR
Ring Fit Adventures
Super Mario Party
Surgeon Simulator

There are also other games that's not as convenient to play in handheld only like:
ARMS
Fortnight
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Tennis Aces
Pokemon Let's Go series
Super Mario Odyssey
Splatoon 2
Zelda Breath of the Wild

You can buy joy cons to play on Switch Lite, but that costs additional $70 MSRP. Might as well buy a Switch at that point

If the thumb sticks breaks or if there are drifting issues, you can have it fixed by Nintendo for $80.

3. Cannot be docked to TV, no kick stand

No docking station. If you own the Switch with docking station; the Switch Lite cannot fit in it.

As of right now, there's no official docking station for Switch Lite from Nintendo, and no 3rd party adapters

No kickstand to play on tabletop mode. Seeing the smaller screen you wouldn't want to anyway even when a lot of controllers are sync and people squinting their eyes when huddled around the system

4. Has a D-Pad.

Best feature of the system in my opinion. Better tactile feel when playing. Enhances gameplay especially when playing 2D fighters

D-pad and other buttons (ABXY, shoulder buttons) are more muted when pressed which is great when playing in a public setting

5. No IR, HD Rumble

The IR Motion Camera and HD rumble features have been removed. Games that support these features will not work on Switch lite

6. Better battery??

4-7 hours versus the 3-6 hours of the original launch Nintendo Switch.

If you buy the newer 2019 model of Switch (Retail box with a lot of Red), the battery life is better than the Switch Lite

7. New colors

Comes in Turquoise, Grey and Yellow
There's also a Pokemon Sword and Shield ( Zacian and Zamazenta) Edition edition

8. Smaller screen

5.5 vs 6.2 inch screen

Resolution is the same at 720p, but more compact making it appear sharper with a 267ppi vs 236ppi

Overall, I like the concept of a more portable (?), affordable switch, but I don't like the fact that it exists.

If it's like the 2ds (with no 3d support). Devs (even first party) will eventually take away features in games in the future: motion controls, AR support, HD rumble, docked TV mode, etc to cater to a wider audience.

They should have just made it smaller and kept everything the same

Good buy for those budget friendly, but if you like more options best to go for the upgrade if you can afford it.

3.5mm Stereo Audio Cable Extension Male to Male Nylon Braided 10ft/3m Zerist Tangle-Free AUX Cable for Headphones, iPods, iPhones, iPads, Home/Car Stereos and More (Black)
My goal was to find a replacement cable for my KEF Space One wired headphones; which turned out to be no easy task. Nearly all cables of this sort have a connector housing that is too big to fit into the somewhat inset cable hole on my headphones. This cable, however, has a very low profile housing, and fits the Space One opening perfectly.

At this point I can't speak to its durability, as I haven't had it long enough. My initial impression is it seems to be well made, and with normal use I don't see it failing any time soon. Sound wise, well, it's a stereo cable, and seems to perform well at the function for which it was designed; does not degrade the sound one bit.

My relatively small gripe is that the cable only comes in 1.2m and 3m lengths. 1.2m is too short for my needs, and 3m is much longer than I need. Something around 1.5m or 2m would be perfect. These seem like fairly standard lengths, so it would be nice to have another 'in-between' option.
