Airfree Iris 3000 Air Purifier, Small, Black
I recently bought a new place to live. Even though it is in the city, there is a small chicken farm nearby which lost control of its flock’s poop smells about two months after I moved in. Next to the chicken farm is a stream where returning fish come to spawn and then die, laying rotting on the banks. The tang was bad enough, but then my neighbour began experimenting with exotic cuisines along the lines of “spoiled rectum of putrefied meat prepared with stinky spices soaked in bad vodka”. Stench city!
The smell was overpowering and it all settled into one room, which I began referring to as “the gas chamber”. Unfortunately, that was my bedroom. When my condo neighbour started cooking, sometimes at 4am, I would suddenly wake to tears running down my cheeks and start gagging for air, throwing open a window just in time to get a refreshing lungful of chicken poop and rotting fish.
What to do? I tried carbon filters, scented candles, a heavy-duty HEPA filter with carbon pre-filter, sprays, air wicks set on maximum, and lots of other things. None of them worked. The smell even overpowered any pleasant odours, like bread baking.
Sleep was becoming impossible.
After spending a lot of money on remedies which didn’t work, I stumbled on the Airfree Iris 3000. It was not cheap, but neither was living in a place where sleep was impossible because of the stench. When first plugging it in, there was a kind of unpleasant chemical odour and the manual does warn about that smell in new units, saying that it takes a while to burn off, but compared to the prevalent stink, it was nothing.
Here is the good news: about 12 hours later, all the smells in the bedroom were gone. That night, I slept like a log. As far as I’m concerned, this air purifier paid for itself the first couple of days. The key phrase is “about 12 hours later”. It took that long for the Airfree to clear out the air in the room. By the way, I set it on a desk away from the wall so that air could circulate through it better than if it had been set on the floor.
