What I Learned Before I Sold to Warren Buffett: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Developing a Highly Successful Company
What I Learned Before I Sold to Warren Buffett: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Developing a Highly Successful Company
Over 300 helpful quotes, concepts and tidbits of information that the author has accumulated throughout his 33 + years running and growing a business.

It seems like the last few books I reviewed mentioned the importance of understanding "opportunity costs". On page 9, "Every activity you undertake exacts the price of not being able to pursue alternative activities... Thus the cost of putting out fires where fires exist and putting fingers in dikes where leaks exist is extremely high in the sense of decreased progress or missed opportunities." Peter Drucker calls that "feeding the problems and starving the opportunities"

Barnett also touches on the importance of being able to execute.

On page 115 there is great advise about the importance of raising prices and the importance of doing so on a gradual scale, whether needed or not because when it is needed you may not be able to play catch up.

A few cool quotes:

"Surrounding yourself with dwarfs does not make you a giant" - Yiddish Folk Saying

Meaning always hire up.

Success

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of the intelligent people and the affection of children:

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better;

To help in leaving a better social condition;

To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is success.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

"In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.

- Warren Buffett

Chapter 63 is on "asking - not telling" It contains some great advise and a few notable quotes:

"I had six honest men-they tought me all I know: Their names were Where and What and When-and Why and How and Who.

- Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

The Real Warren Buffett: Managing Capital, Leading People (Bookbytes Executive Summary)
The Real Warren Buffett: Managing Capital, Leading People (Bookbytes Executive Summary)
I first read this book in 2003 and re-read it again in December 2010.

O'Loughlin's "The Real Warren Buffett: Managing capital, leading people" focuses on both Buffett's skill as an investor and his role as a business leader. Most people are perhaps more familiar with the first yet curiously we are likely to learn more from the second. Why, well because Buffett was "hard-wired" with the kind of logical mathematical brain that favoured him in investing whereas he had to learn to become a good leader.

This book is a great help in addressing how Buffett became a sucessful business leader. It talks about the "explosion" in Buffett's cognition after 20 years being a successful stock picker which came in part from his exposure to Charlie Munger, his subsequent business partner. Just as Benjamin Graham influenced his early approach to investing, Charlie Munger was an equally important influence on his later approach to investing and business leadership.

O'Loughlin highlights how Buffett first began to address the issue of the "institutional imperative" in organisations and then realised it applied to him as well. What is the institutional imperative? It refers to the tendency of organisations to resist any change to its current direction. Buffett liked to quote Churchill who said "you shape your houses and then your houses shape you" and Lord Keynes who said "The difficulty lies not in the new ideas but in escaping from the old ones". In Buffett's case this meant escaping the old ways of valuing businesses that he learned from Ben Graham and learning new ways he was exploring himself urged on by Munger.

In Buffett's case his imperative was to stay focused on stock picking or "renting stocks" as O'Loughlin refers to it, whereas Munger was encouraging him to look at value creation and at those businesses that had enduring franchises (the great businesses as Munger called them). Such businesses had a future whereas for most of Buffett's short-term stock picks, their best days were behind them.

Once he started to acquire these "great franchises" he was faced with a new problem, 'How to motivate their managers to stay running the business long after most had any financial need to do so'? Buffett's answer to this question is the main reason he is as successful as a business leader. How did do it?

His challenge was to get the new managers to continue to think like owners. He did this by guaranteeing their autonomy, but trusting them and by giving them a reputation to live up to. He encouraged them to "run their companies as if these are the sole asset of their families and will remain so for the next century" (Buffett, Letter to Shareholders, 1999).

Ralph Schey noted, "The greatest strength he has - giving you a lot of freedom to run the business the way you want. And that way, you can't pass the responsibility back to him" (ex CEO Scott Fetzer). Bill Child noted, "He has a way of motivating you. He trusts you so much that you just want to perform" (R.C. Willey Home Furnishings). On retiring after 20 years working with Berkshire, Ben Rosner commented to Buffett (paraphrase)"I know why it worked" he said "you forgot you bought the business and I forgot I sold it". In 2000 Buffett said, "in our last 36 years Berkshire has never had a manager of a significant subsidiary voluntarily leave to join another business".

In re-reading the book now, I am struck by the emphasis that O'Loughlin places on "development" which is of course central to my own research on Buffett. I am also reminded that just because a book is eight years old, and there have been many other books on Buffett since (most of which I have read), doesn't reduce this book's many useful insights.
Richard Branson: A Biography
Richard Branson: A Biography
This story of Richard Branson is well narrated and interesting to listen to. I enjoyed learning how Richard Branson overcame many difficulties in his life and also learned from his many mistakes to become a well-respected personality known for his business acumen and personal drive on both sides of the Atlantic and throughout the world.

My only suggestion for the author would be to have written an even longer book which might consist of stories of a number of well-known (or even not so well-known) people from whom we might get inspiration and ideas. I loved this audio book although it was very short.

I was given this free audiobook at my own request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is a great source for the "foundations" of machine work. From measuring instruments to hand tools to heavy machines, it covers the basics, definitions, proper uses, design features etc. Whether just starting machining as a hobby, or a more experienced user looking for explanations for why operations are done a certain way, this is a good, but not exhaustive resource. From a visual standpoint, it was produced on a manual typeset, so some letters are offset slightly, or darker/lighter than others. It is not annoying at all, but a testimony to its era, and I find it interesting.

Being sane, my husband and I are not fans of the current political climate, what with all the clinical narcissistic sociopathy in the Oval Office. Since my husband has a sense of humor, medical degree, and is also capable of running three clinics (whereas the subject of this mug can’t keep *anything* in business and squandered all he’s been given), I think this is the perfect choice for a “just because” gift. I don’t want to see all the pro-ignorant-molesty-hands-xenophobia-man ads that come with purchasing the item, but-it’s worth it... maybe. One star off because he can’t actually use the mug without seeing the picture of that face, obviously.
Jimi Hendrix: Live at the Fillmore East
Jimi Hendrix: Live at the Fillmore East
The music on these 2 CDs is incredible, especially considering the BOGs didn't have much time to write and/or rehearse new and old material. Being that the music is so great, the CD layout itself is a dissapointment.

The 4 shows at the Fillmore were all recorded in their entirety, and should have been released that way. The chopped-up order and deleted songs are an insult to the band and listeners. Bootleggers have done a better job on this material.

This CD is the left-overs from the shows that were recorded to get out of a contract Jimi signed with Capitol before the Experience. Wanting to legally fulfill his obligation, he recorded his 4 shows at the Fillmore in NYC and picked a few songs to make up the Band of Gypsies album.

With that said, it's still worth buying. The alternate versions of "Machine Gun" alone are worth the price. When Jimi kicked the Fuzz Face and Uni-Vibe on, his guitar took off even farther than before.

I think a special mention should go to Jimi as a person. There he was, a super-star with unparalleled abilites, and he still shared the mike and songwriting with Buddy Miles. Very honorable.

Jimi's playing on all 4 sets was excellent, and the technical difficulties that usually plagued him were kept at bay. Buddy Miles' drum kit was solid, and his presence lended a smooth vibe to Jimi's music. Although I've seen criticism on Billy Cox's bass playing, I feel it was perfect for Jimi. With Jimi's playing style of doing both lead and rhythem work, Billy was an excellent anchor for the music. You can't have everyone flying all over the fretboards and come out with anything that sounds like solid music.

Buy this along with the Band of Gypsies album and you'll have a nice archive of a short-lived but important piece of Hendrix (and musical) history.
Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong 1924-1925
Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong 1924-1925
This is the Musical Heritage Society re-issue of the Timeless of Holland product (available at another entry on Amazon);I snatched it up cheap in a used CD bin down in Chicago, seeing the magic words "John R. T. Davies" on the back cover. I didn't realize that it was an "edited" (leaving out the cuss words) product until I got home. I'm entirely opposed to meddling with history, and was surprised that the great late Davies would have truck with such business. However, I have to say that I've enjoyed listening to this CD. Not only am I surprised that even Davies could extract this kind of listenability from those old acoustic 78's, but I'm amazed that even the great Armstrong was this great this early. These records precede the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens, yet I seem to hear a greater incisiveness, clarity and force than I hear in the first year or so of the Chicago recordings. The radically different arrangements, and presumably, the gentle leadership of Henderson, seem to elicit something still only latent in Louis.

As I say, I'm opposed to cutting and editing and re-writing history, and I agree with everything the previous reviewer said along these lines. In theory, anyway. However, at this stage in Henderson's progress, it was tempting. Davies and company (Dutch jazz enthusiasts working for Timeless) did in fact let several of the records run in toto, and you'll see that the band hadn't gotten very far yet. Coleman Hawkins, though notable, was not yet the great soloist he would become, and in fact is outclassed, to my ears, by the trombonist Charlie Green. And the arrangements, well, I guess I'd have to say most are somewhat banal. Even Don Redman doesn't really shine yet. Compare them to the arrangements Henderson was using later in the Twenties; what a difference. Yes, Louis is the center of attention here. And this CD seems to be more available than the full three-CD Timeless release, or the King Jazz issues (now based in Italy? a label that Mezz Mezrow once had something to do with, if that's any recommendation).

In any event, whatever we may think of this present-day restoration of the music, it seems to me that the music itself represents the birth of the African American jazz mainstream: the collision of black New Orleans music with black East Coast pop music. If you've heard the early King Oliver sides, and even the Red Onion Jazz Babies 78's (recorded right before Louis' trip to New York), you'll hear something very different on these records. The dynamism of the Fletcher Henderson recordings equals, nearly, the Jelly Roll Morton sides of the next year, and if they're aesthetically less striking, they offer a road forward that Morton's best records, innately conservative as they were, did not.
Pressed for All Time: Producing the Great Jazz Albums from Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday to Miles Davis and Diana Krall
Pressed for All Time: Producing the Great Jazz Albums from Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday to Miles Davis and Diana Krall
There are countless biographies about and autobiographies from jazz musicians of varying fame. This is the first book where the actual album producers have been interviewed recounting behind-the-scenes events that spawned famous and favourite jazz albums. Included are interviews with legendary producers such as from CBS, Atlantic and Blue Note labels. You learn of the lengths some of them needed to reach to bring a perfect product to the disk presses, hence the title. We learn of the early days of audiotape where producers literally had to cut and splice segments of tape to get the perfect note, phrase, length and so forth. It was all in the name of getting the musicians to sound their best and to get the best product out there for us to enjoy and savour. My favourite quote is from Dave Brubeck recounted by the great George Avakian himself. When a prominent writer quizzed George after hearing he had spliced bits of Dave's album "Brubeck Time", Jarrett invited that writer to ring Dave directly and ask him what he thought about it, and gave him the phone number. Dave responded to the splicing process thus, "George saved my f*****g ass". Because the book consists of a succession of jazz albums, it is easy to dip in and out of. A very good read if you're a jazz fan.

Ripple Junction Grateful Dead Adult Unisex Tour 74 Vintage Light Weight 100% Cotton Crew T-Shirt
I bought this because well, awesome design, rad stealie & I'm huge into 74'...,,
That's all good, but several reviews said this is a soft shirt... It's not. I mean it's less rough than a low cost basic gildan t shirt... But it's no Bella or Canvas brand soft... Also, the length of the shirt at arms and body is a bit too long... It's a strange cut, but not awful... just not all that modern and stylish...I'll keep it and wear it... and for the price it's fine... but don't expect a super soft T with a more modern cut...
Gotta Serve Somebody - The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan
Gotta Serve Somebody - The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan has to be the "energizer genius" of American music. His forty years of writing and recording have touched every genre if not directly then indirectly. He hasn't written Classical Music, but his songs have been reinterpreted by classical musicians; he's barely touched on jazz - though he has written a few jazz flavored numbers - but his work has been interpreted by jazz musicians; and he hasn't written for the stage, though his work has been staged. There's just no end to Mr. Dylan's talent or influence. When Mr. Dylan released "Slow Train Coming," he broke another personal and artistic barrier that had many of his fans howling in rage. But he didn't relent, and followed up the next year with "Saved," and then "Shot of Love." Bob Dylan was writing Gospel steeped in an R&B tradition, and absolutely redolent of the back woods. With all its ragged edges, it was great stuff.
The compilation and labor of love, "Gotta Serve Somebody," is also great stuff. Mr. Dylan's raw gospel has been spruced up in some cases, and roughed up, at least emotionally, in others, with various results. I've never thought "Saved" was a particularly great song, consider it a little too "busy," and this rendition hasn't convinced me otherwise. I feel much the same about, "Solid Rock," good for a start but kinda boring by its finish. "When You Gonna Wake Up?," I find much better in the more vitriolic original. That's not to say these recordings aren't worth the effort, they're just not to my taste.
As a fan, I think one of the wonderful things about this album is the recognition by black, gospel artists of Mr. Dylan's contribution. I think it must be something of a vindication (as if he needed one) of the steps he took as an artist to make his spiritual journey public. But hey, that's what an artist is supposed to do.

Surrounded by Idiots: Drop the Distractions, Embrace Your Purpose, and Get Your Ass in Gear
This book is a "self-help" game changer. Dr. Dufresne has an incredible way of speaking to his audience in a way that really absorbs and sticks to your thoughts and actions compared to other books Ive read. So many "Aa ha!" moments that have completely changed my perspective in how to feel better about myself and the world around me. Not only is the author brilliant but hes relatable as well as comical which makes this such an easy and enjoyable read. I highly recommend this to anyone who's ready to make some positive changes in their life.

"tempest" was disappointing; not enough light and shade and no standout tracks
"together through life" on the other hand is great, some really top notch songs and a consistently interesting set. second only to "modern times"

I've been dealing with Plantar Fasciitis for almost a year, and I've gotten various advice from doctors, forums, and best of all, a shoe salesman. I didn't develop PF by being an active runner. I didn't develop it from plyometrics, or any dynamic and explosive exercise. I developed PF by being too heavy and trying to get to a 10,000 step goal :( This makes it no fun to try and continue that increased activity. The first steps are a real killer in the morning and long days of standing and walking leave me limping.

I'm almost over the Plantar Fasciitis now, thanks in no small part to these shoes. I was frustrated that advice from the doctor wasn't helping, and the solutions that runners used and discussed only left me in more pain--all that advise was geared toward preventing PF and helping the athletic recover from a sports injury. The advice I got from a local shoe salesman has really saved me though.

First for me. NEVER WALK BAREFOOT, especially early in the morning. I keep a pair of Nike sandals (which are surprisingly supportive) close to the bed and step into them first thing in the morning.

Second for me. Get a really GOOD pair of walking shoes for my days off. I opted for these walking shoes. What a difference from the Skechers I'd been wearing. Thanks, Amazon! The local shoe salesman basically explained that I absolutely did NOT want a shoe with a flexible sole. This was the opposite of what an athletic sufferer may want to do. Having the flexible sole forces your foot to get stronger and stretch out the injured section of Plantar Fascia. For me, being the very non-athletic sufferer, it was causing me to constantly re-injure the foot. What shoes work for you may be completely different than what work for me, but I feel I found a good shoe. More below

Finally for me. I purchased a set of the Superfeet BLUE Premium Insoles for my work shoes. They add the same kind of support to my work dress shoes that I was finally getting from my sandals and walking shoes. I spend approximately five hours of my day standing and walking, logging 6-8k steps on average. I can finally get through each day (for a few weeks now) with nothing more than normal fatigue. I feel like if always used these insoles and followed the no-barefoot advice I would have been free from PF a long time ago.

As anyone who has Plantar Fasciitis knows, it can be a real activity killer. But the combination of the above practices has really allowed some healing over the last several weeks. In fact, I have recently taken up golf and have decided that when I have time or am only playing 9 holes I will walk a course. I am wretched at golf, but it's absolutely awesome that I've gotten through about 100 holes of golf without any PF pain!

I will be ordering more shoes from VIONIC and will have great things to say. The one thing I will mention, though, is that they do run small. I wear a men's 13D. If I had to order shoes outside my size I could get away with a size 12.5--my feet aren't long enough to have any issues with an undersized 13, but those of you who find your toes crammed into your shoes I can't help you. If in doubt, order these shoes a half-size too small. You will be receiving a great shoe! What I needed out of a day-off shoe was support, and these shoes have been great. In reference to the golf, my first few rounds I wore these shoes instead of golf shoes. They provided good enough traction that I could play during the tail-end of a wet winter, but more importantly I found I can finally walk a couple miles without massive Plantar Fascia pain!

I haven't had to break these shoes in, and I have no blisters or hotspots. Very, very happy with my purchase...

I will also be posting an edited version of this review for the insoles I purchased, but I really want to recommend these shoes!

The rings arrived in what appears to be a generic box, so I was a bit worried that I did not get what I ordered. But upon opening the box, the Halloween rings are, indeed, there. Some of the rings are a little hard to turn on- but they do seem to be working. We are a teal pumpkin house- so looking forward to giving these away for trick or treating!
These are less expensive than similar offerings I've seen on Amazon- so I wanted to give them a try. To compare, I also ordered some of the more expensive ones to see if there is any difference. They seem to be identical. So this is a great deal!
Playskool Heroes Marvel Super Hero Adventures The Power Up Squad
Playskool Heroes Marvel Super Hero Adventures The Power Up Squad
I bought this for my superhero obsessed 4 yr old, to add to his mini superhero collection. He loved it, especially the hulk (with a push of a button his hulk smash hand flys off). I was a little disappointed that not all of the characters do something special, with how big their featured hands all I figured they'd all shoot something but they don't. My only complaint is that the arms easily come off, they are one piece that pops into the back. I could easily put it back together, but my 4 yr old can't and that gets annoying cuz he is so rough. I will try to remember to take/upload a picture.
This Mountain Life
This Mountain Life
This is the most beautifully filmed documentary I have ever seen. While few can compete with my beloved Dick Proenneke, I have new adventurous people to admire now (sans the Buddhist-flavored nuns...what they were saying was not Catholic). There were so many, many gorgeous shots of the mountains and their beautiful facets- from the minute to the grand. I kept saying, “now THIS moment or particular shot is my favorite....” but then another came. The mother and daughter skiing down the mountain, making their final descent, the way they cross-crossed each other’s paths was - mesmerizing. And as for the man on the mountain? Yes, his lottery was far better than mere paper money. I would pay to see the views that he woke to every morning. It all just begs the trite question- we are all alive, but how many of us are really living? I’m surrounded by millennials who are quarantined for Covid, and who after a mere 10 days are unable to live with themselves, who are drinking copious amounts, binging on social media, whining about not having 2-ply, and the list goes on....this film was indeed appropriately inspiring.

I couldn't have asked for a more perfect shaker. Like many others, I removed the stirring device, as I don't really use it for shakes or smoothies, but I do mix powdered meds and supplements in it and it works great and has a perfect seal. The size is goid, too. The only drawback was that it had a strong chemical odor when I first got it and had to wash it several times to get rid of it. Once I worked tgat out, it was smooth sailing.

Irish Thoroughbred (Irish Hearts Book 1)
I'm horse crazy so it didn't take much for me to want to read this book and obviously I was biased to like it. But I was disappointed. From the beginning I thought the character of Adelia was overdrawn and the outcome with Travis entirely predictable. And pretty improbable. But even so, I enjoyed the horsey setting and the story moved along. But I was shocked that Adelia's employer repeatedly touched her inappropriately and even worse, kissed her every time she got mad. They were NOT in a romantic relationship; she was his employee and what Travis did, and repeatedly, was sexual harassment. And poor Adelia didn't seem to notice. I didn't check to see what was the publishing date of this first Nora Roberts; perhaps it was before sexual harassment in the workplace came to be viewed as a crime and perhaps that's why it was treated so nonchalantly. But I thought it was a terrible choice of a plot device.

Love Nora Roberts and her stories under , J D Robb. Enjoying the stories in First Snow very much. Thing only thing I did not like was the voice the reader Christina Traister used for Michael. Had a hard time listening to it.

My favorite reader is Susan Ericksen . She did a fantastic job on the J D Robb ,,, In Death, series. The way she brought out each and every character is just great.
Blue Smoke
Blue Smoke
Another excellent book by Nora Roberts! This book was full of vibrant characters. Rena comes from a large family. She has two older sisters and a younger brother. Gina has been her best friend since childhood and is as good as family. Bo was an only child, but has a couple of great friends. I thought the first time Bo and Rena actually had a conversation (when she moved in) was hilarious. Bo was making no sense whatsoever (to Rena). I found his decade-long love for "dream girl" both odd and very sweet and romantic. I absolutely adored the dynamics between the characters in this book. Rena's exuberant family provided endless entertainment. The story line of the book was interesting. This book is HEA with no cliffhanger.
Formidable. Merci monsieur Dard.
The Berenstain Bears' New Baby
The Berenstain Bears' New Baby
I grew up with the Berenstain Bears books and my daughter loves this book as well. The fact that the characters are bears doesn't confuse her and calling brother bear just small bear doesn't confuse her either. At the end of the book when sister bear is born I "change" the words of the book to call him brother bear so she gets the idea. This book seems more appropriate than the newer version with the birds and the bees. It doesn't go through a lot in regards to the changes that brother bear will endure after sister bear is born but it does go through a typical day in the life of small bear and how he doesn't notice how big mama bear has gotten. Papa bear takes small bear out to build a new bed and mama bear stays behind to deliver the new baby (which isn't mentioned, sister bear just appears in the last few pages). I like how it relates a lot of siblings in the sense of how the older child's "stuff" is passed down to the younger sibling. My daughter got a new bed and is now waiting the arrival of her baby brother so he can go in her old crib (just like in the story). It doesn't explain how to be gentle to the baby and how everything is going to change for small bear but I honestly like that because in most cases other than having a new baby in the house, the toddler isn't going to up and change his/her ways just because a baby is around. I still expect my daughter to run rampant in the house when her brother is sleeping and expect me to take her to the park in 100 degree weather with the baby (and we will)! Other books seem as though the older child's life has to get flipped upside down due to the birth of a baby while this book insinuates that brother will have a part in sister's life but his life will remain unchanged because his needs are still just as important as they were prior to his little sister being born.

Gods & Gangsters (An Illuminati Novel)
Gods & Gangsters (An Illuminati Novel)
This book is a whole new level of the dark! I could not put it down once I started reading it. Every detail was well described and pictured in a novel that you feel you are engaged in all of the events happening throughout the book. The author shows a very noticeable skill in developing the characters. All of the characters' personalities were so well developed and detailed that you felt like you knew every single one of them; and the story was aligned throughout the book.
Overall I enjoyed reading this book very much and I definitely recommend it to everyone who enjoys reading novels.
The Babysitter's Club & Troop Beverly Hills
The Babysitter's Club & Troop Beverly Hills
Good deal that you can get this two-fer pack for about the same price or less as buying Troop Beverly Hills by itself!

So I'm not having the best luck with the "PG" movies of the 80s. I think a lot of these would probably be PG-13 these days. I grabbed Troop Beverly Hills for my 8 and 10 year old girls on a road trip. I sort of remembered the movie from when I was younger, and it seemed like something they might like.

There is a lot of talk about divorce in this movie and some mommy/daddy issues. Not the worst thing in the world, but seems like a bit of a downer. The girls said they thought the movie was "pretty good" but I think in retrospect there are probably some better, brighter movies that they would have enjoyed more.

Why does this item tell you it is a miniature at 7 cm, when in fact l have twice ordered the same thing and it is in fact 17.5cm? It is a waste of delivery time and being disabled, l am having to be left with the mess of re-packing and waiting in for the courier to collect this and many other profoundly unsatisfactory items from the manufacturers. l am disgusted that l await the courier to now pick up 11 boxes with 2-3 items in them, to be returned, as l have tried to be positive and hope what came through my door would be satisfactory. I now give up on the possibility of having the full set of a satisfactory wind up musical Peter Rabbit set, a\s you will see.

Only the Brave: "One of the best adventure writers around" - Clive Cussler
I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Chelsea Sedoti, and Sourcebooks FIRE in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, for sharing your work with me.

This is a funny, feisty fast paced young adult novel that I truly enjoyed. Told in the voice of senior Hawthorn Creely, she suffers all of the angst and lack of self confidence most of us remember from high school and though this is modern, it appears nothing much has changed, at least in small town Ohio. Hawthorn - named for the tree, not the writer - has an embarrassingly hippy vegan mother, an older brother, Rush, in community college and a professor of medieval history for a father. She has no plans for after high school graduation despite pressure from her family and cannot envision herself in any adult roll. Her only true friend is Emily, who is an excellent pianist with a clear career path and a free ride to higher education based on her talent.

Lizzy Lovett is that girl - the charmed cheerleader - we all envied, who had a date every Saturday night with a cool guy, good grades, the 'right' clothes and a 'normal' mother. Libby, three years older than Hawthorn, was a crush of her football playing brother, Rush, and both Rush and Libby were seniors when Hawthorn was a freshman at Griffin Mills High School. Libby was everything Hawthorn aspired to be - and wasn't.

Now Libby is missing. Hawthorn feels compelled to find out why. I think you will truly enjoy Hawthorn. She is a keeper.
Spirit Magic (Hanna Halfblood Book 1)
Spirit Magic (Hanna Halfblood Book 1)
I thoroughly enjoyed the story itself, but the writing seemed a bit inelegant at times. The conversations didn't seem to flow as conversations should, and there were a number of times where short sentences were clustered together where the narrative would have probably benefited from longer, more descriptive phrasing.

One other thing that was actually pretty jarring from an immersion standpoint was the fact that the weapon used by the main character later in the story switches from being an axe to a sword and back again, sometimes in the same paragraph.

All that being said, I am still very much looking forward to the next book.

I opened the amazon box to see a knocked about merchandise box with tape holding it together. Inside were two great skates, or at least I thought so until I looked closely and checked how well the blades were secured. Actually the blades were well secured but there were holes in the sole of these shoes which looked like a previous blade had been attached through previously made holes. Maybe that’s ok with folks, but I decided these were not for me. $160 skates should arrive in a nice box with nothing making you feel like you’ve got second hand goods really.
Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor
Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor
Overall a good device. The setup instructions are bit vague. A couple a things I learned along the way regarding setup. The instructions say hold the device 4.3” from the phone to calibrate. I thought 4.3” seems very precise and must have some impact on calibration. I tried over and over to calibrate the device at close to 4.3” and could not. Finally I reached out to customer service and they told me I could go more than 4.3”. This made Calibration a bit easier. Still a bit of a pain. I also struggled to include my swing in the video when setting the device the recommended 8’ behind the ball. Customer service said I can move the device further back without impacting accuracy. I also learned the heading setting has no impact on the device’s measurement of distance. It’s a little tricky setting the heading.

Once set up, the device does a nice job of capturing the data and allowing you to sort it in several ways.

Compared to Flight Scope’s Mevo...
Rapsodo shows you balls fight path using a red fracking line. It identifies each swing as a fade, draw, straight etc. Mevo does not.

Rapsodo provides a google map type image of your range or course and the gps locations of where you hit your balls. You can see patterns clearly. Mevo does not.

Mevo provides spin rate and height. Rapsodo does not.

Rapsodo’s software allows you to sort data by column and tracks your average distance for each club in a user friendly interface. Mevo does not.

Rapsodo only provide video of your swing from directly behind the ball. Your phone must be placed on the Rapsodo device. Video playback is limited. No slow motion or ability overlay video with lines and circles. With Mevo, your phone can be placed in any location and video play back can marked up and played in slow motion. The video feature is one Mevo’s stronger points. However, Mevo saves all the video on your phone in your camera role. 6s clips. Rapsodo will save up to 100 clips on their cloud service. For annual fee of $100 it will save unlimited clips.

Overall I think the Rapsodo is the superior device. The only real advantages Mevo offers are the ability to obtain video from different angles, video play back options and the ability to measure spin rate(although you have install a small silver sticker on each ball to track spin rate).

Mevo’s software is far better. More than seeing your distance, you can see how you hit the ball, fade, draw etc. The ability to see your average distance by club is easily accomplished. You can sort all your stats various ways including by week, month and year. You can sort by distance, club speed, launch angle, etc. While Mevo’s video is better, Rapsodo’s cloud service is big plus. You don’t have to load up your phone with all the videos. You can track data only with Mevo and not capture video.

Apologies for cryptic typing. Typing review from my phone...
Bora Portamate PM-3500-Industrial Strength Universal Rolling Mobile Base That Makes Your Heaviest Power Tools Easy to Move
Bora Portamate PM-3500-Industrial Strength Universal Rolling Mobile Base That Makes Your Heaviest Power Tools Easy to Move
I needed a strong, sturdy and steady mobile base for my Nova drill press. I was looking for something that would move easily yet support it's ~260 pounds and still be rock solid while in use; which is a tall order considering its six feet tall with a high center of gravity. This base delivers on all these points. The yellow levers easily lift the weight of the drill press off the floor through their foot activated cam action.
An important caveat is the minimum dimensions that are given as 18.25 x 23.5. Each dimension is possible but not both at the same time. This is due to the rails needing to occupy the same space within the corner pieces as their orthogonal counterparts. Thus, to achieve these dimensions, I had to cut an inch off each end of the front and rear rails; see pic. Otherwise, the assembly was quite easy, the threads were all well cut and weren't fouled with powder coating, as many tend to be.

While most bases advertise support weights that are ridiculously higher than they can obviously support, this base probably comes close to its advertised 1500 pound limit. The substandard packaging mentioned in other reviews is entirely accurate; the packing consists of little more than enclosing the pieces in very thin bubble-wrap sleeves and tossing the pieces in a cardboard box. Thankfully, mine arrived without any cosmetic damage, but certainly only due to luck.

WisToyz Kids Toys Hover Soccer Ball Set Rechargeable Air Soccer, Indoor Soccer Ball with LED Light and Foam Bumper, Toys for Boys, Girls, Toddler, Including an Inflatable Ball (No AA Battery Needed)
Edit: tried to add a video, hopefully it worked. That would be my 6 yers old kicking the ball with his day (and scoring!)

I must say, I was pretty skeptical about this one in the beginning. Hoovering soccer ball with lights, - sounds a bit too good to be true. I was very surprised when in fact it was working just “as advertised”.
I have two main soccer players – aged 6 and 3. Straight out of the box the ball came with some charge and the boys were playing right away! They played for good 30 minutes before the charge decreased. I must add here that our first ball was in fact defective (I think it might have gotten damaged in shipment) – the spinning part (fan?) was misaligned with the axes and there was some scraping noise from the start which I assumed at first was normal. After two games or so the ball stopped working. I contacted the seller and they were absolutely amazing and replaced the broken ball within less than two days! The new one has been in use for over a month now and has no problems at all.

I did warn the boys to be gentle, and they mostly were. However, the older players in the house (aged 23 and 42 ) were much less careful when they got their turn. It has been flying around and was kicked into furniture and still works just fine.

So, above being my impression as a parent who wants kids busy and happy, here is what I think of the ball objectively.

1. It works great on a hardwood floor. It glides smoothly and can be kicked very fast, making a game very challenging.
2. The provided soccer “goals” are useful if you want to keep a real score and have older kids who can be precise and aim really well. Even my 6 years old is still a bit of a novice and it’s too hard for him to score in these goals. Adults though found them very much usable and fun.
3. Ball bounces well off furniture and walls. My boys preferred playing space is a narrow corridor and those “bounces” were utilized to change the ball’s direction.
4. Charge lasts enough for a long game. We never ran out (but we keep it charging when not in play).
5. Lights are nice, not annoying at all.
6. It is sturdy, but obviously requires some sensible treatment as it is plastic.

Overall, I find it well worth the money and highly recommend it.
A Crowdfunder's Strategy Guide: Build a Better Business by Building Community
A Crowdfunder's Strategy Guide: Build a Better Business by Building Community
I seldom write book reviews (not for a lack of reading, typically it's a lack of time) but sometimes you read a book and you can't put it down. This is such a book. Those who frequent gaming sites such as board game geek or read Jamey's blogs know that he is committed to quality in every facet of how he runs his business (Stonemaier Games). His unique board games have terrific production value and have had notable success (his game Viticulture is releasing an essential edition in November and he has another Kickstarter campaign set to begin this October). He's someone who puts the needs of his backers (and even non-backers) above his own.

In his book, Jamey stresses that taking the time to build up your community (by being a positive, contributing member) and genuinely connecting with your supporters to establish trust can greatly increase your chances of having a successful crowdfunding campaign. Such venues are remarkable because in many of the campaigns, the backers contribute both financially and creatively. In A Crowdfunder's Strategy Guide, Jamey discusses that no matter how great of a product you think you might have, it is the people that support it that make it truly great. By putting every single backer first, you establish trust that can keep those backers interested in your future endeavors. For example, his company has a 30-day return policy on Kickstarter products and not surprisingly, very few have ever acted on it which a testament to their exceptional quality.

Furthermore, the book discusses many of the logistical pitfalls (such as international shipping or manufacturing issues) or scarcity tactics (the dreaded early bird pledges) that can doom (or severely hinder) an otherwise good campaign. It cites numerous Kickstarter campaigns and their results, as well as some of the creative ways creators appreciated their backers.

This guide was a delight to read and I encourage anyone who finishes it to continue their research by delving into the numerous blogs he has posted at his website kickstarterlessons. It is completely free to read and has a wealth of information. Highly recommended!

These faux candles have a real wax exterior and flickering LED in the shape of a flame that make them seem almost like the real thing. At a glance they can easily be mistaken for the real thing, but after studying them a bit you can tell that the flame doesn't move around, and the flicker isn't quite the same as a real flame. They are not that bright, but match a real candle pretty well and definitely give the room a warm ambiance.

These candles are a bit smaller than I was expecting after looking at the picture. Specifically the diameter is about 2.2" when I thought they were going to be more like 3". Having a set of different height candles is nice and helps enhance the illusion that these are real candles.

I really like that these use two AA batteries instead of some smaller and less common batteries. Yes, that means a lot of batteries, but they should last a long time as these don't use very much power. I tried a set of NI-MH rechargeable cells and they worked fine.

The remote control works good to turn all the included candles on/off and change the modes. There is a timer mode, flicker vs. steady on mode, and the brightness can be controlled with the remote.

These would make a great gift for someone, especially if they like candles but don't dare to use them for fear of kids or pets knocking them over and burning the house down.

Water For Elephants
Water For Elephants
The book is better than the movie. The book has well developed characters. It's also has a rich, well developed, story line.. You feel the atmosphere and the grittiness of circus life. You get to know and feel about the characters in the story; beyond the main characters. . In the book, Marlena wasn't portrayed as some flirtatious vamp. Jacob was an innocent, but strong young man thrown into the circus by life circumstances, and you really get to know August as the truly sadistic person he was. Uncle Al, the owner of the circus was cut out all together.

Yes, you get to see some of the sadistic traits of August, but in watching the movie, you can kind of feel for the guy, too. It's not like he imagined his wife and Jacob's attraction. Marlena and Jacob were very obviously attracted to each other, and they were obvious about it. Marlena was flirtatious with Jacob. Their sexual attraction was there almost from the beginning. What man would be happy about his wife's flirtation with his employee and his employee's mutual attraction towards her? Sadistic though he was, I still could understand his anger at the situation. The situation actually gave some credibility to his anger...extreme though it was. His inability to express his feelings led to a lot of cat and mouse games between the characters. I didn't enjoy that. It lent an unnecessary darkness to this movie. The book was gritty and real, but not dark.

The movie wants to convince us that August is a sick, sub human being, and that's a lot of the focus of this movie, but it's wasn't firmly convincing, because of the way they chose to portray his wife's character and focus on her relationship with Jacob.

In the book, there was much more to Jacob's character than his interactions with August and Marlena. Marlena wasn't sending out mixed messages. Marlena wasn't a mixed up victim that needed to be saved by Jacob. She chose her life with August, had enough, and she just made a different choice for herself with Jacob, and you get it was her choice. In the book, Marlena was a stabilizer for August, until she had enough. Jacob was attracted to her from the start. Marlena was not. She came to know Jacob and then she came to love him. August was a sicko and there was no doubt about it. He was crazy way before Jacob came on the scene. You get this clearly. There is no conflict in the reader's emotions. His craziness was not jealously driven or really even directed towards Marlena, until he feared losing her. She was his savior, until she chose not to be. When August gets his due. You want to clap. In the book, you come to know and love Camel, Walter, Rosie, and you really get to know Jacob. You get a feel for the solidarity of the roustabouts and sub performers in the extremely hard working conditions, and the toughness of the people of that time period. You get a real feel of the class distinctions within circus life.

All that said, the movie is well acted. The average review is for the script, not the acting. This is not a true representation of the book at all. Water for Elephants is so much more than some damsel in distress love story, and her dark, creepy circus guy husband. If you like to read, get the book. You'll be drawn in and enjoy it. The books is so much richer.
3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 4000 UV, PN06580, White, 295 mL Cartridge
3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 4000 UV, PN06580, White, 295 mL Cartridge
This product, like all 3M products is outstanding. I used it to reseal a Pilothouse to deck seam that had developed some leaks. The previous seal/caulk had dried out, shrunk, and cracked. I cut it out and refilled the joint with 4000. I cleaned the area with acetone, masked off beyond the seam and applied 4000 with a caulking gun. The sealant flowed smoothly and filled the joint completely, easily resealing the leaky joint. This product is waterproof so cleanup is messy if you get it where you don’t want it. It does not smooth with a wet, gloved finger, merely smears. Apply enough to fill your joint and no more. Small overages will be “cleaned” up when you remove the masking. I applied the 4000 to a joint almost forty feet in length overall and the cure time is not so quick that I couldn’t easily pull the tape without pulling the caulk. It made an attractive seam and fixed the leak. Unlike 5200, 4000 doesn’t dry/cure so hard that it has to be ground out to remove it, but can be cut out with a knife at some future point if necessary.
BLU Vivo XL4 6.2" HD Display Smartphone 32Gb+3Gb RAM, Black
BLU Vivo XL4 6.2" HD Display Smartphone 32Gb+3Gb RAM, Black
So far, I have gone through four generations of Blu phones. Two of them being the studio and two of them being the Vivo.
Out of all the budget smartphones I have ever owned, this one surpasses my expectations by far. Although I have only had it for two weeks, the operating system is very stable. The 3gigs of onboard memory seem to have no problem switching between applications, I have no lag or freezing.
The operating system itself is robust.
The phone itself is made of quality materials, and the notch display - although a little bit gimmicky, is very effective after time.
In the world of cases, you will be disappointed that the aftermarket appears to have not one single case available for this phone as of the 1st of January 2019. (Edit, see below).however, the phone does come with one clear silicone case, and one that has abstract art on it.
So what I have done is left the phone in its silicone case and it looks wonderful. for only $150 this phone is absolutely fantastic and for the average to above-average user - they will find incredible value for this.
If you want to make an amazing gift to your parents or grandparents and bring them into the smartphone community, this is a wonderful way to begin at all.
The ease of the operating system, the speed of the processor, and the build quality of this phone are all very nice....
Now as for the the sound quality - coming from the twin rear speakers: it is above-average. Not fantastic, but totally acceptable. The speakers are rear firing, and facing out from the back they create pretty decent sound.

I cannot speak on the fingerprint reader as I find any security on my phone obtrusive.

The pictures that the camera produces are on par with any average smartphone. Totally usable and totally acceptable by sharing and showing standards.

It is almost unbelievable that you get this much phone for the money. I will update this at the 2-month mark, as that is when the phone really shows its bones.... But thus far I can only give it my highest ratings and congratulate Blu.

Micro USB.. no problem. The standard today is USB-c but transmission and data rates are still fine. And lucky you! you probably have a lot of micro USB cables laying around the house 🙂
I mean what the heck do you expect for a unlocked smartphone less than 150.00??

With specs close to an Iphone, it blows my mind people spend more.

And I read a review about the operating system. In my opinion, it is modern, fully functional and will be relevant for at least two years. If you make it to the two year mark with this phone, then truly you will know what quality and value can be, thanks to Blu.
In all my years as a tech guy even in the army, this device is worth every penny and I stand by my review 100%

I do not work for Blu , I do not get paid or compensated for anything. I write this as a thank you to them for saving me and my elderly mother money and allowing us to have nice phones we can enjoy and afford.
(I have now purchased 3 of these.)

For one new iPhone you could get 7 of these for your friends and family that would love to have them, if they weren't jaded children anticipating something 500+$

This phone is the KING of the budget smartphones oh, and if you are ever in a jam and needed an unlocked phone immediately, you could just keep this one on deck and be good to go for a very long time.

Oh did I mention that the battery lasts all day long and then some, and I'm a super user 😋😋😋.

again, I will edit the review at the 2-month Mark but so far I give this phone a solid A.

Edit : so it's been about 45 days with the phone. And I continue to only praise it.
I keep reading the highest rated comment about blu not upgrading their operating system. As I said in my review before, who really cares about that? This operating system will be totally usable for at least 3
2 years.
I've also read comments that say that the hardware messes up the experience. Okay whoever you are out there.. what in the heck are you expecting for $150.

I'm 40 years old, middle class, I use the phone more than a regular person.. and I say once again I recommend this phone absolutely.
If you don't like it, you can return it as well, what do you have to lose??

Also as of the last week you can buy an extremely nice case to fit this phone. It was just released about a week ago and I compare it to a Spigen... It has a nice internal bumper as well as a solid rubber shell . It is the case that you want and it's only 14 bucks.
Tudia case for vivo xl4, they sell it on Amazon right now.

So, get the phone, and get a black case.. you spent $180 and you have a fantastic piece of technology.

Don't believe the other headlines, especially the one about Wi-Fi. That is definitely not a phone issue. The phone cannot connect to your home internet because it's not on the same radio band. That is a very easy fix done through your Wi-Fi router settings.

Not everyone is going to have a great experience - but I would say for the most part these phones perform excellent.

After 45 days I still grade this phone A.
NETGEAR R7500 Nighthawk X4 AC2350 Dual Band WiFi Router ((Discontinued)
NETGEAR R7500 Nighthawk X4 AC2350 Dual Band WiFi Router ((Discontinued)
Purchased this router hoping for a substantial upgrade from a very old Netgear router that had served me very well for a long time. However, the good feelings I had quickly turned to frustration and eventually made me write this review. Long story short, not long after I got the router installed and working I noticed some issues with my wireless signal. Specifically, the 5GHz portion of the router introduced frequent cutoffs and disconnections to my devices. No problem at all with the 2.4GHz or the wired devices. Having a background in IT, I went through the common troubleshooting steps, factory resetting the device, changing channels, even more obscure items like MTU adjustment and disabling certain features as directed on their self service help system. No change.

I was truly disappointed because many of the features worked very well, and I liked the management UI. Really made tailoring the network performance much easier than my previous router.

Finally, I decided to request an RMA. This was another painful process for an already frustrated consumer that shouldn't have to deal with the steps performed in the first place. The CSR tried to upsell me on a phone support service and, when I declined the extra cost, then tried to get me to follow their online help documents that I had already gone through several times. Finally, an RMA was approved.

You'd think this is where the story would end, but of course not. I was forced to pay a large shipping cost to even have the new router shipped before they received my RMA. How they expect someone to live without a basic router for a week is completely beyond me. Then when the router did arrive, it exhibited the exact same issues as the one that was returned.

At this point I'm fed up with this brand and will not be purchasing another Netgear for myself, nor recommending it for anyone else either. I was even considering purchasing some of the Arlo security cameras, but seeing that they are a Netgear product, I'm out. I'd caution everyone to stay far away from this product and even reconsider Netgear in general if you don't already have a strong attachment to them. A company needs to have either a great product, great customer service, or both....and frankly they appear to have neither.
Sous Vide Precision Cooker 1200W Ultra-quiet,IPX7 Waterproof,Thermal Immersion Circulators with Big Digital Touchscreen Display,Control Temperature and Timer for Kitchen
Sous Vide Precision Cooker 1200W Ultra-quiet,IPX7 Waterproof,Thermal Immersion Circulators with Big Digital Touchscreen Display,Control Temperature and Timer for Kitchen
Hubby wanted me to order a sous Vide after seeing one at his friends place.
We are not much of a meat eater.
Anyway curiosity got the better of me too.
So I did some research on Amazon and picked this brand Bonsenkitchen’s Sous Vide.
It came well packaged.
Took 5 days but it is normal delivery time for Oregon Coast.
Unboxing took about 5 mins.
Came with simple and easy to follow instructions.
I mainly learned to cook with it by watching YouTube videos.
I've been very happy with it's cooking performance, and have just a small quibble with the controller.
Just remember that if you want your meats to have that "just from the oven/grill appearance' and that extra layer of flavor, you're going to have to throw your cut on the grill, under the broiler or a torch for a few minutes.
LOTS of good U-Tube videos for recipes, etc.
Temperature regulation has been Very Good at about ±1.5°F of the set temp, which I've also cross-checked with my other digital cooking thermometers.
Water circulation seems to be very good, and the cooker is definitely Very Quiet as others have commented.
I would also have to agree with others that setting temp and time could be more user friendly. A single button press is a single increment change for either temperature or minutes.
If you hold the button to make either setting, the controller quickly jumps to warp speed and you may find that you've overshot your target.
The countdown timer LEDs on the "front" of the cooker are moderately helpful and do give you a quick visual reference as to approximately how far thru the cook you are if you're not watching a clock.
The digital display is clear and bright.
The cooker clamp is practical and functional.
I am surprised by how big it looks.
Just be judicious when using and you should be fine for a long time.
Cleanup is super easy since there really isn't anything to clean up. I
just hand dry as best I can, then air dry for a timer you are packing it back in the original box it came in.

Would I recommend this to others? I'd have to say yes for its performance and quietness.
I did not purchase a separate tub for my cooking, but instead have used a couple of larger stock pots that I have on hand, one of those being a thicker walled anodized aluminum pot, one a stainless pot and another larger porcelain steel pot.
All have worked equally well. I just cover the top of the pot with a sheet of aluminum foil which helps to hold in the heat, and as the water condenses on the foil, it just drips back into the pot.
No problems so far with cooking away the water, even after some all-day cooks.
One of my primary reasons for buying a sous vide cooker was that I'd hoped to make less tender cuts of beef more flavorful and not so chewy.
Prestige Svachh Clip-on Mini Hard Anodized 3 Litre Pressure Cooker, black
Prestige Svachh Clip-on Mini Hard Anodized 3 Litre Pressure Cooker, black
Very disappointed with this product. I have been using prestige for a long time. I was very happy when they introduced this product. But unfortunately my happiness was only there till used this product.
Ii have 2 cookers with clip on model. First one is steel. Instead of whistle water started pouring from lid. I thought I had used too much of water. So bought a smaller one. It gave me the
same problem.
Will never recommend this product to anyone. Very disappointing and what a waste of money.
Either Prestige should either call back this clip range and fix or discontinue it.
