Macally Magnetic Phone Car Mount, Windshield Phone Holder for Car with 12" Long Arm & Super Strong Magnet for All Smartphones, Cell Phones, iPhones, Samsung Galaxies, etc.
This is a great piece of equipment for ANYONE who drives with a cellphone so they don't have to hold their phone while driving. It also positions the phone when using a GPS app better than most cars' built-in GPS screens because it can be positioned anywhere on the windshield so you don't have to take your eyes off the road to check the GPS info.
Previously, I had a mechanical gripping phone holder with the same suction cup-flex neck design but the gripping mechanism broke easily and the foam, which held the phone so it didn't slip out of the "grippers", after about 1 yr in the sun, heat and cold, lost its ability to retain the phone so that eventually, the phone would slide out of the mechanism.
The magnet on this unit is strong enough to hold the phone to the windshield mount without risk of the phone falling but it's easy to remove the phone, not by pulling straight towards yourself, but by sliding the phone horizontally or vertically without first retracting a gripping mechanism. This means it's easier and faster to exit the car or to mount the phone on the system.
When you use it as a hands-free, again, you can see the screen without having to take your eyes off the road.
I had purchased a magnetic system previously that mounted to the air vent and it worked great in the rental car I was driving for a long trip. However, when I tried to use it in my own car, a Honda Civic, the design of the vent-mounted system had no adjustment so the angle of the vent slats would angle the phone face away from me at 45 degrees. To top it off, nearly always there was a reflection that made it impossible to see the screen clearly. After one try, I knew I couldn't use that vent-mounted magnetic system in my own car.
With this new device, at first, I was a little concerned about the rigidity of the flexible neck but it can be reformed so that the phone is in an optimal position for use. Unlike some systems, it doesn't bounce or deform on bumpy roads so it's easier to read the display with a minimum of eye fatigue. The design of the mechanism also allows rotation of the phone to any position depending on whether you prefer a landscape or portrait orientation of your GPS display.
Finally, the suction cup is not just dependent on the rubber cup being suctioned to the glass, but there is a sticky surface that seems embedded in the suction cup that also keeps the suction cup from pulling away from the glass. I haven't had this long enough in hot weather to see if it stays up longer (that's usually when the suction cup fails to hold as the car sits in the hot sun), but I anticipate that it should be better than a "standard" suction cup.
So far, I love this device since there are many ways I can prevent reflections on the screen that obstruct view of whatever you are viewing. At the same time, I never have to drive holding my phone, so I'm never violating a "hands-free" law. Just for the record, I never talk on my phone in areas where laws prevent ANY phone usage, hands-free or not.
To be clear, the kit comes with a dash-mount but I have not tried this since the finish on my dash is pebbled or grainy so I don't know how long or firmly the system will "hold" in such an arrangement.
