Magnolia: The Shooting Script
Magnolia: The Shooting Script
Admitted, I've not seen the movie. I loved Boogie Nights, which I thought was worlds beyond just "a flick about porno". It was deep, and intriguing, and dark. And this book is no different. These characters are not perfect, nor do they pretend to be. They are real, their emotions are real, and its so unabashadly beautiful how they can do what they feel when they feel it. Some of the writing (especially Frank TJ Mackey's monologues) are downright hilarious.
At first I thought that so many characters would make the story incoherant, harder to conceptualize exactly what was going on. The beauty of scripts, in my opinion, is the fact that you can visualize the film in your head, see the characters doing these things, ESPECIALLY if you haven't seen the movie, which I'm dying to do. Paul Thomas Anderson can't make a bad movie, or a bad script. The three stories intertwine and revolve around one long day in the San Fernando Valley; from the old, disheartened Quiz Kid, the young and new Quiz Kid, from the dying man and his frazzled bride, to the lonely cop with low ambitions. They all circle around one another beautifully, from scene to scene telling you the ultimate story about love, life, and what it means to actually BE there for someone. It doesn't have to be perfect, or beautiful, or meaningful, you can only do the best you can. At moments the script even pokes fun at itself, saying in one situation "this is the part in the movie where you help me out" which I thought was cool and funny and cute at the same time (and the FROGS! The FROGS!...) Don't doubt PT Anderson, his next will probably blow this one away.
But he'll have a hell of a time trying.
Creating a Portfolio like Warren Buffett: A High Return Investment Strategy
Creating a Portfolio like Warren Buffett: A High Return Investment Strategy
There are two kinds of books on investing like Warren Buffett: the good ones and the rip-off ones. This is one of the good ones. The author adds value by reverse engineering Buffett’s trades, and distilling what he’s found into several stock research checklists:

Business Characteristics
Earnings
Debt
Equity
Profit Margin
Capital Investment
Management
Dividend
Assets
Inventory
Share Buybacks
Insiders
Institutional
Inflation
Cyclical Company
Turnaround
Stock Price

Each of these have several questions, such as “What is the average ROA for the last ten years?”. There’s a tutorial on each question, showing what the author thinks Buffett is looking for. In total there are over sixty questions. To show how this analysis works, he then analyses Infosys Ltd, an IT company.

If you find this interesting, read Buffett himself in Berkshire Hathaway Letters to Shareholders.

If you want to invest like Buffett, there are at least three ways you can do it:

1. Buy shares in Berkshire Hathaway.
2. Buy the same shares that he does, when he does. Men Faber describes how to do this in Invest With The House: Hacking The Top Hedge Funds.
3. Use his techniques to find companies in which to buy shares. This book explains how to do it, but you might also look at Invest Like Warren Buffett: Powerful Strategies for Building Wealth.

If you have stumbled across this book while looking for something which explains how to invest your money wisely, you might want to look at my favourite book on investing: Millionaire Teacher: The Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School.
Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger, Expanded Third Edition
Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger, Expanded Third Edition
Poor Charlie's Almanac has been on my reading list for the last couple of years. It took me a six-month sabbatical (and then some) to get through it. This is a testament to the information, lessons, references and stories from Charlie Munger. Fundamentally, this book is an encyclopedia of information on what it takes to be successful and to achieve greatness in what it is you want to do in life; all from a very successful and extremely well read (and connected) 90-ish year old billionaire!

Let's be clear, this is not a book that you can quickly skim through, but rather a book you spend quality time with every day; for a good couple of months. This way you're giving yourself the best change of retaining all of Charlie's tidbits of wisdom. One of the great things about this book is the plethora of quotes from successful entrepreneurs, historians, philosophers alike whose ideas and writings have survived the test of time.

Suffice to say, this is one of those books I'm going to re-read, reference and quote for the rest of my life. Well worth a purchase!

Three Key Takeaways from the book:
1. Charlie knows no wise people who didn't read all the time. It is more than just reading though, one has to grab ideas and do sensible things. Most people do not identify ideas, and if they do, they do not know what to do with them
2. Diversification in investing is something that Charlie doesn't believe in. His recommendation is to choose three good company stocks and invest accordingly. Interesting approach given most financial advisors typically recommend the opposite
3. Self-pity is always counter-productive, It's the wrong way to think. And when you avoid it you get a great advantage over everybody else or almost everybody else, because self-pity is a standard response. And you can train yourself out of it
T-34 vs StuG III: Finland 1944 (Duel Book 96)
T-34 vs StuG III: Finland 1944 (Duel Book 96)

The Law of Success: In Sixteen Lessons
The Law of Success: In Sixteen Lessons
In defense of a particular audio rendition of this work, I'll make a few points about what we commonly refer to as The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill.

Since few reviews list them, the 17 principles of success according to Dr. Hill are as follows:

1) The Master Mind - Learn the psychology behind success and how you can use it to enhance your personal power.

2) A Definite Chief Aim - Save wasted effort, and focus your heart and mind on a well-conceived, practical purpose.

3) Self-Confidence - Overcome the six basic fears and empower yourself without falling into the trap of egotism.

4) The Habit of Saving - Master this basic concept and learn to harness your greatest source of personal power.

5) Initiative and Leadership - Develop your instincts to anticipate problems and know when to seize opportunities.

6) Imagination - Stimulate your mind to create new concepts out of common ideas and put them to work for you.

7) Enthusiasm - Overcome uncertainty or shyness, and inspire others to take an interest in you and your ideas.

8) Self-Control - Find the firmness of character to truly be "master of your fate and the captain of your soul."

9) The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For - Take advantage of the Law of Increasing Returns to earn more for service rendered.

10) Pleasing Personality - Transform yourself so that you can master your relationships and control any situation.

11) Accurate Thinking - Separate real facts from mere information so you can devise definite, practical plans.

12) Concentration - Laser-focus your mind on one subject at a time so the plans you create are plans that will work.

13) Cooperation - Eliminate envy and greed, and learn to apply the Law of the Master Mind in all of your relationships.

14) Profiting by Failure - Train yourself to recognize the difference between failure and what is just a temporary defeat.

15) Tolerance - Eliminate mistrust and doubts so you can reap the rewards that come naturally to accurate thinkers.

16) The Golden Rule - Use this most basic law of life to ensure cooperation from any individual or group.

17) The Universal Law of Cosmic Habitforce - Transform your thoughts and habits so they harmonize with success-consciousness.

One reviewer here remarked that you ought to just skip this entire book set and instead get Think and Grow Rich, however a cursory examination of the table of contents for Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich shows that the latter book covers a slightly different set of topics. Law of Success lays the groundwork for a success mentality whereas Think and Grow Rich spreads into the realm of some specific actions which you ought to undertake. To expand out from there in the realm of modern reality, consult works by, say, Brian Tracy, Jim Rohn, Dale Carnegie, etc.

As for the Law of Success course, the original text appears to be out of copyright protection, having been first published in 1928, so now we see a plethora of publishers performing the old "copyright two-step" where an original public domain work is reprinted in its entirety with a few minor editorial touch-ups here or there, some light editing work done, and/or a modern introduction by the editor. Thereafter, the entire work is re-copyrighted. Hence we see a collection of competing versions of the same original text, some of better quality than others. Any hard copy will run between 1,000 -1,600 pages, so check the page count to ensure you get what you are bargaining for.

As a personal fan of both the science of self-improvement and audiobooks, I recommend against both the BN Publishing edition and the Audible download edition.

The Audible edition is an earlier rendition of the text which contains only 15 original main principles, whereas Mr. Hill gradually expanded his Law of Success central thesis from 15 to 17 over the course of his later life. Additionally, I advise against any Audible product because I cannot in good faith suggest your purchase of any sort of digital media download which contains Digital Rights Management (DRM). With DRM downloads, you run into headaches with playback, copying or burning and ultimately you don't really own the media you paid for.

The BN Publishing edition gives the impression of being extremely poorly executed and the final product leaves a bit to be desired. The two-cd set is well-printed, but the text is an earlier version, the quality of the MP3's sound terrible, and the back cover points to the wrong homepage for the publisher(!).

Therefore, with neither package do you get the "real deal."

The best-quality audiobook of The Law of Success is the High Roads Media edition, which you can buy either from the Napoleon Hill Foundation or here at Amazon. It is a 4-volume unabridged set with some minor editing, some more current examples, and editorial clarifications.

The Law of Success, Volume I: Principles of Self-Mastery
ISBN: 1-932429-06-9

The Law of Success: The Principles of Personal Power, Vol. II
ISBN: 1-932429-08-5

The Law of Success, Volume III: the Principles of Self-Creation
ISBN: 1-932429-10-7

The Law of Success, Volume IV, 75th Anniversary Edition: The Principles of Personal Integrity
ISBN: 1-932429-12-3

This set is a bit more expensive than other audiobook approaches but you get the most exposure to the material for the money. Hard copies of this set are also available and are also strongly recommended.

For myself, I am about halfway through the third volume and the going is great. Already my mind and mentality is beginning to shift towards more success-consciousness. I feel better and my "success instincts" are beginning to sharpen. The content is a bit long-winded and archaic, but very solid and very well-thought out, what with 20 years of active research necessary to produce these insights. I heartily recommend it and it should not be passed over. I wish I had come across this 10 years ago.

I got this set as a gift for a financial counselor I work with. He was super happy when he saw them, but I think his wife was more excited - she bought him a matching shirt! I was worried about the fit and quality, but he says they fit great and are very comfortable. Friday is fun sock day for him and he’s worn these several times since getting them 4 moths ago (I know because he likes to show me once it a while.). Highly recommend!

The Attachment Styles Mastery: Define Your Attachment Style, Decode Your Partner's Brain And Build a Lasting Relationship
The Attachment Styles Mastery: Define Your Attachment Style, Decode Your Partner's Brain And Build a Lasting Relationship
this book has opened my eyes and gave me a clear and vast overview about the topic, the author started with how childhood circumstances could play a significant role to dive your adult attachment style, also has gone in details and gave a full understanding of 4 types of attachment and how to define your iwn style and your partner style, he described the right way to act and react with different types of personalities, how attachment styles affect relationships, but the best part that is the relationship pairings, this has opened a new world to me to define who I am and how I might react based on my partner attachment style, the book talks in full about these following pairings : secure / secure , secure / anxious , secure/ dismissive avoidant, secure / fearful, dismissive/ anxious, avoidant / anxious , anxious / anxious , fearful / dismissive , dismissive / dismissive, fearful / fearful avoidant, then he talked about how the attachment styles affect the partner thinking and the crucial importance of communication in relationship, I do reccomend this good read for every beginner to have decent, right and global knowledge about the topic, this book is informative and has an easy writing flow and style, I really enjoyed it.
One Piece, Vol. 16: Carrying On His Will
One Piece, Vol. 16: Carrying On His Will
One piece is my favourite series for it's creative character designs , weird style, outlandish humor and simple yet deep/ enchanting story telling approach. Both visually and , this series has inspired in a unique way which almost no other comic/animated titles from japan have done before.

This volume brings us a new addition to the main cast of characters and a heartful tale !
Tony Tony Chopper may just look like another one of those annoyingly cute and adorable mascot characters that seem to be a traditional staple in these kinds of series , but he's so much more than that!
Just like the rest of the central cast he has a strong back story which explains his personality and the way he acts , his background story is even better than a lot of the characters around so far and is definitely one of my favourites.
Just see him as a human child, full of innocence and naivety ,what he is on the inside !
He is slowly going to mature as the story goes on, as he explores the world with his new friends !

This volume deals with the middle part of the Drum Kingdom sub-arc, which is one of the more enjoyable sub-arcs in my opinion. The highlight of the volume is definitely the background story of Chopper , as it's full of loneliness , friendship , heart , hope and tears. Very inspiring and touching , as are most of the tales behind the characters from this series.

One of the most enjoyable books that have been released so far in english , especially since there aren't any tedious fighting scenes that drag on too long in this volume.

My only gripe , is that the translated english version by Viz, seem to have a lot dialogue similar to the 4kids TV version. And 4kids can come up some pretty rubbish dialogue that doesn't fit.
The english version , because a lot of dialogue in this Viz translation seems to miss/ step around the point of a lot of the japanese dialogue in a lot of scenes.
But other than that, most of the english manga version is good enough, although the impact of some of the lines / jokes / scenes have been reduced due to dialogue changes.I think translators should be so creative sometimes.
Black Jack 1 (Osamu Tezuka) (Spanish Edition)
Black Jack 1 (Osamu Tezuka) (Spanish Edition)
How many volumes will there be?

This edition of Black Jack has a total of 17 paperback volumes, containing about 12 stories each. It is based on the Japanese 17 volume Akita bunkouban edition.

Wait, paperback? so what are those expensive hardback versions?

Vertical also published special limited hardback editions of books 1 to 3 in the series. They are limited to 1500 (vol.1) and 1200 (vol.2 & 3) copies and distributed through Diamond to brick and mortar comic-book stores.

The difference is not only in the cover, they include three additional stories (one in each) NOT included in the Japanese edition on which the Vertical paperbacks are based. These three stories will not appear in the softcover books. More on this later.

Is this The Complete Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack, then?

Well, no. Even if you buy all the three hardcovers, the answer is still no. No book edition, including all the Japanese editions so far, includes all Black Jack stories as originally serialized in magazines. Also, not all the book editions omit exactly the same stories. It is a bit messy, actually. More on this later.

Why were some stories excluded from the books?

In many cases, criticism or controversy about the medical conditions depicted. Some of the stories missing from the books deal with lobotomies, for instance. Or are inaccurate. Or relatives of patients with the disease depicted in a story would complain. Tezuka was very sensitive to all this criticism. In other cases he simply thought the stories weren't good enough to be reprinted in book form.

So, how *complete* is this?

Very, actually, one of the more complete there is. There are a total of 243 issues of Black Jack. 5 "sealed" issues where never collected in book editions because they contained controversial or sensitive material. 20 more issues are excluded from some, but not all, of the Japanese book editions. 12 of these are included in the bunkouban edition on which the Vertical edition is based. And three more of these 20 appear in the special hardcover volumes 1-3. So. If you have all the Vertical paperbacks you will have 230 out of 243 stories. If you also buy the hardcovers you will have 233*.

*i researched all this at tezukaineglish.com. of course i might have misread or miscalculated something.

Is Black Jack a series or a serial?

A series. Each chapter is a self-contained story. You can read them in almost any order. In fact, that's what you're already doing. This edition does not present the stories in chronological order of publication, but in the order Osamu Tezuka himself indicated for a deluxe edition planned shortly before his death, in 1989.

For instance. The stories in this first volume are not issues #1 to #12 of the serialized manga but rather issues #1, #167, #12, #52, #29, #50, #86, #185, #57, special issue between #113 and #114, #54, and #49. There is a rationale to all this. Several of the stories give backstory information about Black Jack, where his scars come from, why he decided to become a doctor, etc. So Tezuka decided to put them at the beginning of the series in this new form.

Where can i learn more about Black Jack and and all this mess about the excluded issues?

Go to 'Tezuka in English' website (tezukainenglish.com). That's where i dug all this stuff up, all kudos to them.

Is Black Jack really that good?

As a surgeon? Definitely. As a comic-book classic? The answer is also yes. Black Jack is as classic as Tintin or Terry and the Pirates, but with surgical gore.
Case Closed, Vol. 13: Life's a Beach-Then You Get Murdered!
Case Closed, Vol. 13: Life's a Beach-Then You Get Murdered!
Gosho Aoyama, Case Closed, vol. 13 (ViZ, 1994)

In all honesty, I'm getting kind of tired of the episodic nature of Case Closed at this point; can't we get back to the original storyline? Still, Aoyama does put together some clever mysteries to distract us from the fact that the overall story is going precisely nowhere. I wish I could look forward to the next volume of Case Closed as much as I do, say, One Piece, but it's really tailed off recently. ***

The Cars of Trans-Am Racing: 1966-1972
The Cars of Trans-Am Racing: 1966-1972
As someone who has an extensive racing library with several books about the famed Trans Am series from 1966-72, I was hoping this book would offer something that hadn't already been covered.

Most books previously written covered the great drivers and the racing, but in this one, author David Tom did a great job covering the technical details about the cars themselves. The author has personally owned several of the restored race cars, and not only covers his own experiences, he also has interviews with other current owners about their own machines and how they were able to perform as well as they did. This is valuable to describe details about the cars that 40 year old pictures just can't capture.

There is also a lot of great historical info about how the series evolved like it did, and discusses some of the creativity of the team owners & car builders (like Roger Penske & Smokey Yunick and others) to exploit the rulebook. For example, he goes into the development of the Ford in line carburetor and the efforts Ford went through to get it legalized for competition (unsuccesfully, I might add).

While most books gloss over the early years of the AMC program and the trials & tribulations of the Pontiac race teams, this book covers both of those in detail. In addition, the author has personal interviews with team managers like Bud Moore and Ronnie Kaplan on the series & what occurred behind the scene in their dealings with the manufacturers.

My only complaint is that the book only covers the over 2 liter class with no info on the under 2 liters, which unfortunately seems to be a common thread in most of the books written so far.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the Trans Am series.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Seasons 1-3
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Seasons 1-3
As someone who grew up with the original in the 1980s, I admit to being skeptical about this remade version. After giving it the old college try, I have to say this was much better than I expected it to be.

First, the characters all have different looks to them, making them easy to identify. No offense to the Filmation fans, but when all the characters' faces look almost exactly alike, it can get confusing at times. (Remember, Filmation was known for making hit animated series on a limited budget.) Second, the stories here are more complex than the original, making for great storytelling and people able to truly identify with them. The original had basically the rebellion vs. the Horde every time. Here, it's not always straightforward, which I actually find enjoyable. Finally, I am actually fine with She-Ra NOT being associated with He-Man here. Yes, they are kids and teens and have the typical angst, but they're facing issues based on what many face in the real world.

The only downside I have is there aren't more episodes, but then it's streaming, not on TV, which is fine.

The original will always be near and dear to me, but I have room for this updated version, as it is well done.

ARTEZA Acrylic Quilters Ruler & Non Slip Rings - Double-Colored Grid Lines (4.5"X4.5", 6"X6", 9.5"X9.5", 12.5"X12.5", Set of 4)
Item arrived within expected timescales, packaging not great one item was damaged slightly. items are great to look at, brilliant and fit for purpose with inch measurements. clear lines on the product. non slip silicone discs provided and items are perfect for cutting out my shapes with a rotary cutter as I have failed with using a ruler and rotary cutter. I am going to purchase a suction handle and a storage solution for them as they are quite large.
disappointed one of the corners on the large ruler was chipped, will definitely recommend - ideally for suppliers you would benefit from putting the rulers in a box to protect them during transit. Im not returning the product as its very small and will not affect my projects
Crock-pot SCCPPA800-V1 Express Crisp 8-Quart Pressure Cooker Includes Air Fryer Lid, Stainless Steel
Crock-pot SCCPPA800-V1 Express Crisp 8-Quart Pressure Cooker Includes Air Fryer Lid, Stainless Steel
I’ve been using this cooker for a few weeks as heavily as I can trying as many different cooking modes as I can. I am comparing it, as much as possible, to an Instant Pot Duo 6 quart borrowed from my sister. Rather than a long essay, let me see if I can list the pros and cons in bullet points.

- The 8 quart received here is enormous. It’d be useful for those who wish to prepare dishes for many or maybe a week’s worth of a dish for two people.
- The non-stick makes for much easier cleanup than the Instant Pot’s stainless, but for some reason, my instinct tells me that this finish won’t last and must be used with soft instruments only.
- We eat a good deal of rice. The Crock Pot’s rice making is heads and shoulders above the Instant Pot. It’s roughly 15 minutes to perfectly cooked short grain brown rice (our dominant kind). The Crock-Pot will cook all rice as well as dedicated rice cookers. The Instant Pot won’t but will turn out an acceptable product.
- The documentation for the Crock-Pot is simply shameful. It’s almost non-existent where the Instant Pot’s well-done. If not for the Instant Pot’s included instructions for use, I’d have no idea how to use the Crock-Pot.
- I tried 80% of the Crock Pot’s modes finding all worked as expected aside from air frying which is, in truth, simply non-existent. To air fry, you need to control the temperature and also have a true air frying cage. The Crock-Pot has a rack and cannot be temperature controlled aside from Low or High which are not documented as to what temperature these settings represent. This is a ‘Mickey Mouse’ setup.
- The same goes for all modes where many have a choice of low or high again undocumented. Trying slow cook, I prepped a corn beef brisket guessing what high would yield on both the Instant Pot and the Crock-Pot. The Instant Pot worked well. The Crock-Pot at the same time yielded an almost dissolved brisket. Clearly high and low aren’t standardized settings across appliance brands.
- Sautéing works the same on both but cleanup of the Crock-Pot is easier given the non-stick. I always used cooking spray on both devices.
- The Crock-Pot does brown which gives it an enormous advantage over the Instant Pot even if it won’t air fry. The Crock-Pot does approach and may even be the only appliance that can do it all. It’s that good where it works at all. I think it’ll even bake but with the settings only of ‘high’ and ‘low’ the outcome will take too much trial and error plus decanting will be difficult.

In sum, where the Crock-Pot works, it works at least as well as the Instant Pot Duo and often better such as with rice, but it simply fails in some areas. The claimed air frying is so lame as to be, for me, non-existent, however, the browning after cooking is a terrific improvement over the Instant Pot as well as other similar appliances. In other areas, it’s often let down by a truly shameful lack of documentation as well as an inability for the user to finely adjust its temperature settings.

Everything about the Crock-Pot smells of a product rushed to market by the sales department resulting in a less than ideal appliance. A little bit of further thought may be in the next generation, may yield a 5-star product but not this time.
