The Mysterious Affair at Styles: Hercule Poirot's First Case (Special Edition)
The Mysterious Affair at Styles: Hercule Poirot's First Case (Special Edition)
The Mysterious Affair at Styles was the very first Agatha Christie novel to be published and arose from a challenge set by her sister, Madge, to write a “good detective story”. At the time Christie was working in the dispensary of a local hospital and, as such, had a professional knowledge of poisons that was to pay dividends in both her first accepted manuscript and many of her future novels. Although she began writing this story in 1916 it was to be another four years before it was eventually published, albeit with the original courtroom scene revealing the murderer replaced at the request of her publishers. Christie’s proposed revision proved to be the first of many drawing room elucidations by the great Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

Styles is set in July 1917 and narrated by an invalided Captain Hastings who has returned from the Front to convalesce. When he bumps into old friend, John Cavendish, he gratefully accepts an offer to spend his final month of leave at Styles Court, the Essex country house of John’s stepmother. To all intents and purposes stepmother Emily raised John and his brother, Lawrence, and has always been more than fair to them, however a whirlwind courtship and sudden marriage to the twenty-years younger and highly sycophantic Alfred Inglethorp has rather poisoned the atmosphere with the man seen as a blatant gold digger. Resident at Styles St Mary are John Cavendish and his wife of two-years, the inscrutable and charming Mary, and John’s younger brother, Lawrence. Throw into the mix Mrs Emily Inglethorp’s trusted factotum, Miss Evelyn Howard, protégée Miss Cynthia Murdoch and a host of household staff and when Mrs Inglethorp is found dead the obvious culprit with a clear motive is swiftly identified as her new husband, Alfred. Thankfully Hercule Poirot is on hand due to his status as a refugee in a neighbouring village and it is Hasting’s who first proposes that the Belgian investigate the matter. Prepare for things to become far more complicated as a variety of locked doors, poisoned substances, rumoured liaisons and ulterior motives are unearthed ahead of Poirot making everything clear for Hastings (and readers alike).

The dandified master detective of Hercule Poirot is not only impeccably turned out but highly affected and tremendously self-confident and after Hastings engages his friend he is more than a tad miffed by Poirot’s reluctance to share all of his suspicions and insights. Through the medium of the far less ingenious Hastings as narrator, Agatha Christie makes the ongoing revelations brilliantly accessible thanks to his requirement for many an detailed explanation. Whilst the cast are perhaps less colourful and more forgettable than in other Christie novels, this allows Poirot to take centre stage in his inaugural outing. It is at the courtroom stage that an official from Scotland Yard appears in the form of Inspector Japp, whose only previous encounter with Poirot has left him more than willing to defer to the great man.

In a brilliantly complicated plot the means of death is quickly identified as poisoning, but how the substance was administered to the victim becomes pivotal in identifying the culprit. Packed to the rafters with red herrings, subtle insights on the wartime era and an insightful social commentary, whilst the solution to this case requires a technical knowledge of poisons and how fast they work, the majority of the clues are all contained within what unfolds (as Poirot is very fond of telling Hastings). Sadly I failed to adhere to an earlier lesson on Agatha Christie’s tremendous economy with words as I was left astounded by how a seemingly casual observation from Poirot came back to hit me between the eyes as it was pulled out of the bag some one-hundred pages or so later only for its relevance to become glaringly obvious!

Amazon: How the World’s Most Relentless Retailer Will Continue to Revolutionize Commerce
Amazon: How the World’s Most Relentless Retailer Will Continue to Revolutionize Commerce
“Amazon shoppers tend to be loyal lifelong customers.” ~ pg. 22

What will shopping be like in the near future? What is already happening as customers become center stage and companies bow to their wishes? As customer expectations rise to new heights, technology is making customer desires a reality.

If you've read “One Click” and “The Everything Store” or any other book on amazon, this is the next level of knowledge you need. This book will also keep you riveted until the last page. Natalie Berg and Miya Knights are great researchers, writers and know how to make a book exciting page after page.

The authors go deep into the psychology of how amazon “thinks” and “acts” even before customers know what they want. For instance PRIME changed the way amazon shoppers thought about being more loyal. There is also some interesting information about Echo owners and how much more they spend at amazon.

Why are millennials spending differently?
What do people want to spend money on these days?
How is the on-my-terms shopper changing the shopping experience?
What has the greatest influence in buying decisions?

This book answers these questions and more...

Some of the topics discussed throughout the book include: autonomous computing systems, AI shop assistants, 1-click, shopping by voice (Echo), Dash wands, Kiva Systems (robotics), Prime Air, Showrooming, Checkout-free stores, instant gratification, virtual reality experiences, frictionless shopping, experiential spending, Amazon lockers, Treasure Truck, FBA Fulfillment by Amazon, Amazon Go and driver-less trucks.

What I also found intriguing was the detailed information on the Whole Foods acquisition.

The authors of this book are very insightful and make a number of well-thought-out predictions which you may feel are very interesting to consider. They do however seem to emphasize the Amazon Effect a lot, but seem mostly positive about it. Obviously Amazon has changed the game in regards to keeping customers satisfied no matter what business is selling products.

So by reading this book you will learn a lot of interesting facts. You will also gain a much deeper understanding of what customers expect a shopping experience to be like. I'm glad I read this information as it has enlightened me on various things I had heard about but had not researched myself. This book will be interesting to anyone who loves to shop or who has products for purchase. Knowing what people are going to want in the future is the goal of this entertaining book.

Henry Ford's Lean Vision: Enduring Principles from the First Ford Motor Plant
Henry Ford's Lean Vision: Enduring Principles from the First Ford Motor Plant
I spend my days managing an industrial operation where Lean is the backbone of our shop floor and office processes. As with most lean practitioners, I read a great deal of the current lean literature. As a student of industrial history, I have read hundreds of books relating to the early 20th century manufacturers.

As a result, I was hopeful this book would offer a concise place to see early lean lessons. Most folks have some view of Ford. Those early lean lessons are often more acceptable for use in the US lean training. Over use of Japanese examples and terms can get in the way of learing lean.

I was disappointed in the book. The information presented is valid. It also is aligned with my own experiences and reading. However, the presentation and writing style made this a difficult book to read. The author seemed to want to add in the lessons of Chinese and Japanese thoughs. Those lessons seemed forced and broke up the rhythm of reading the book.

It is more of a personal preference, but the layout and style of the pages did not enhance the reading experience.

There is a great deal of underlying value in the material presented. If you choose to read this book, be prepared for a slog. It is a valid premise--poorly presented.

The mask is great. Yes it is on a peice of cardstock with a stretchy string. People should read the description if they don't understand that before they leave a bad review. READ PEOPLE. Anyways everything is good quality my only problem with this is that the seller put it in soft packaging and my mailman manhandled the crap out of it and smashed it into the mailbox and now there's a huge fold going through the middle. My grandma will laminate it for me so it's okay. But still you should put something hard in there or put a "DO NOT FOLD" sticker on the package or something. Lol. No reason to leave a bad review because the item itself is good. just frigging package it better yo!!!
*Don't send a new one or refund it, it's okay, just promise you will package it better next time haha.
With The Beatles
With The Beatles
This review applies to Sept 9, 2104 vinyl mono releases only. I've waited 35 years or more for new issues of pure analog Beatles on vinyl. No digital manipulation, or any manipulation, just music from original analog tapes to LP's. After years and years of disappointing digital releases and digitally modified vinyl, I thought this day would never come. I actually gave up buying music for a 20 year span. Based on listening to these new all analog mono LP's, I have found these Lp's have very little noise, if any, sound fantastic, and the pure analog sound is as good or better sounding than original Capital/EMI/Apple releases, in my opinion. No harsh compressed sound, no 2 dimensional sound, no digitally remastered sound transferred to vinyl, and no more dashed hopes in DVD Audio and SACD. These LP's sound fantastic.

Like many Beatles fans, I grew up listening to them in the 60's. They made a violent and polarizing time in America more bearable. In the 60's, I bought and played their LP's until they were damaged beyond repair. I bought into digital music in the 80's only to find that it paled in comparison to pure analog. I should have bought more pure analog LP's while I had the chance, but, thought the medium was gone, whether I liked it or not. Finally I found vintage equipment (Sansui 6700 Receiver, Marantz Model 6300 Turntable, and JBL S312BE Speakers) and set out to spend mega money on EBAY for sealed analog LP's from the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately, many albums made in the 70's were made of cheap thin vinyl and were often warped or had defects/noise when new and right out of the package, but, I persevered and have a good collection of Beatles and other pure Analog LP's and some 45's.

You don't have to spend Mega money, however, as these mono releases are superb in quality and sound. There is very little noise, often none between songs. The LP's are flat as they are 180 grams, and most importantly these LP's sound warm and beautiful. I just sat back, closed my eyes and let the music and harmonizing soothe my soul. I did not buy the box set for $375. I bought each individually. This along with a $40 reduction for applying for a credit card brought the total to about $250, and if you get a defective album, you can send it back instead of the whole box.

Remember though, "Let it Be" and "Abbey Road" are not included in the box set as they were only made in stereo. Capital US releases like "The Beatles Again" and "Beatles 65" won't be there either, but, you will find those songs in these mono releases anyway.

Thank you Apple/EMI/Optimal Media (Germany) for giving audiophiles what they've wanted for so many years. You did good.
Louis Armstrong: 16 Most Requested Songs
Louis Armstrong: 16 Most Requested Songs
This CD entitled 16 Most Requested Songs tries to give the very best of Louis Armstrong in just sixteen numbers. I don't think that's possible; but at least they gave it a whirl.

"Mack The Knife" features Louis singing this number perfectly with a strong jazz arrangement in the background. Louis never misses a note, either! "Ain't Misbehavin'" is one of my very favorite Louis Armstrong numbers; and he performs this W.C. Handy tune better than anyone ever could! The horn leads the musical arrangement and Louis performs "Ain't Misbehavin'" with an awful lot of style and grace. Moreover, listen for a live track of "On The Sunny Side Of The Street;" Louis enjoys an excellent rapport with the crowd and. "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" has a beautiful jazzy arrangement, too.

"Black And Blue" is another masterpiece by Louis Armstrong; the arrangement is brilliant. Louis conveys all the right emotions at just the right times, too. I really like "Black And Blue."

"Blueberry Hill" has a fantastic treatment from Louis Armstrong; and I like the arrangement for the piano, too. "Keeping Out Of Mischief Now" is a joyful, playful and upbeat ballad that is sure to please you. The musical arrangement is excellent and Louis performs "Keeping Out Of Mischief Now" flawlessly.

The album ends beautifully with Louis Armstrong performing "Cabaret." I think the tempo is a little too slow for my taste but it works well anyhow.

The liner notes aren't the greatest but I do like the artwork.

I think, after all is said and done, that this is an album best suited for people who are new to Louis Armstrong. They can listen to it and get a great introduction to his work. Diehard fans will already have all of these numbers in their collections. Nevertheless, it's a fairly good CD--but it's not a complete retrospective because a mere sixteen tracks could never truly be the limit of Louis Armstrong's most requested songs.

Knocked Out Loaded
Knocked Out Loaded
Maybe someday you'll be satisfied
When you've lost everything you'll have nothing left to hide.
When you're through running over things like you're walking 'cross the tracks,
Maybe you'll beg me to take you back.
Maybe someday you'll find out everybody's somebody's fool,
Maybe then you'll realize what it would have taken to keep me cool.
Maybe someday when you're by yourself alone
You'll know the love that I had for you was never my own.
Maybe someday you'll have nowhere to turn,
You'll look back and wonder 'bout the bridges you have burned.
You'll look back sometime when the lights grow dim
And you'll see you look much better with me than you do with him.
Through hostile cities and unfriendly towns,
Thirty pieces of silver, no money down.
Maybe someday, you will understand
That something for nothing is everybody's plan.
Maybe someday you'll remember what you felt
When there was blood on the moon in the cotton belt.
When both of us, baby, were going though some sort of a test
Neither one of us could do what we do best.
I should have known better, baby, I should have called your bluff.
I guess I was too off the handle, not sentimental enough.
Maybe someday, you'll believe me when I say
That I wanted you, baby, in every kind of way.
Maybe someday you'll hear a voice from on high
Sayin' "For whose sake did you live, for whose sake did you die?"
Forgive me, baby, for what I didn't do
For not breakin' down no bedroom door to get at you.
Always was a sucker for the right cross.
Never wanted to go home 'til the last cent was lost.
Maybe someday you will look back and see
That I made it so easy for you to follow me.
Maybe someday there'll be nothing to tell.
I'm just as happy as you, baby, I just can't say it so well.
Never slumbered or slept or waited for lightning to strike.
There's no excuse for you to say that we don't think alike.
You said you were going' to Frisco, stay a couple of months.
I always liked San Francisco, I was there for a party once.
Maybe someday you'll see that it's true
There was no greater love than what I had for you.
Oh Mercy
Oh Mercy
OUTSTANDING ALBUM!! A+++ I put this album in the stereo the very evening I got home and received it--I couldn't wait to hear it--but basically I was just curious (I didn't listen to the samples before I got it). But the surprise I got was something like the following metaphoric comparison: I was prepared to get a ride in a car and see new scenery on the next street, but instead I got into a supersonic jet and took off in a very rapid and steep ascent!!!! WHEEE!! Up and away--WHAT A THRILL!!! Oh my God!!! What an album!! I had to grab tissues to wipe my moist eyes I was so moved and happy! An almost 50 year old Bob Dylan executes an over the top super performance in this exceptionally rich and sophisticated mood evoking album--his voice is perfect. Right away in Political World during the first stanza and during the crescendo, you can hear that he sings it to PERFECTION--going softly or delicately on some words and even his signature hillbilly twang that he invented long ago is evident on some words he sings that make this song among others a symphony of sound. And listen to the AWESOME LYRICS to Political World!

The tune itself to Political World is not complicated, but the arrangement, the lyrics and the way Bob sings it makes it complex and sophisticated--very much so. The arrangements are so very sophisticated in the other songs AS WELL. Everything is Broken is super (available in The Essential Bob Dylan). Man in the Long Black Coat is drop-to-my-knees-I-surrender F A B U L O U S with Bob's deep voice in this one--it is a richly mysterious, somewhat meloncholic song, the "heart stopping" What Was It You Wanted has a VERY STIRRING DYLAN HARMONICA and guitar, Ring Them Bells is very deep. This man is so unbelievably talented, I can't get over it!!! THIS ALBUM IS A MUST BUY!!! So many times before I've said: "Bob, you are TOO good!!!!" This is another album I was saying the same thing!!!--over and over and over. The lyrics to the songs in this album are very good. Altogether between the sound, the tunes, the arrangements, the lyrics and the way Bob sings them, most of these songs are absolutely over the top outstanding!! Okay, you may always find some song that you just don't care for on any one album--that's almost a given, but I can't get over the quality of this album, and I can't wait to go home in the evening or wait till the weekend to play my favorites over and over again. I will never get tired of this album.

These songs are powerful, richly complex and VERY sophisticated starting with the super "Political World." I thought I had heard all Bob's best by now and I was absolutely amazed to hear all these superb songs. I can't tell you how enthusiastic I am with this album. Hey, my excuse for not having this album before is that I got stuck in Europe for much of the time after graduating (my choice), and I got tangled up with the locals, but if you were here all the time and knew Bob Dylan from the 60's, you surely have missed out on a real treasure of an album! He's come a long way baby!!!

PS: Hot Note: After doing this review, I opened The Rough Guide to Bob Dylan that I have at home and in the section right before "Not Dark Yet" they mentioned that "Man in the Long Black Coat" was WRITTEN IN THE STUDIO AND EXECUTED all in ONE take. Another book said he wrote it "QUICKLY" right in the studio. I find that absolutely remarkable to say the least--absolutely mind blowing! Also listen carefully to "Most of the Time" because the music in the background is super.

B O O M!!!!!

Bob Dylan - The Little Black Songbook: Revised & Expanded Edition
Bob Dylan - The Little Black Songbook: Revised & Expanded Edition
There are unfortunately some glaring omissions in this book, some key Dylan songs are not included, like With God On Our Side, Tombstone Blues, Buckets of Rain, Highway 61 Revisited, It takes a lot to laugh it takes a train to cry, Highway 51 Blues, Pretty Peggy-O, Baby let me follow you down. Instead, a bunch of throw away outtakes and filler material have been included. The author made a poor selection, and I can't give it more than 2 stars.
Introduction to Programming in Java: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2nd Edition)
Introduction to Programming in Java: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2nd Edition)
This book is clearly tailored for somewhat intense Computer Science Undergrad Program's first year course. I say that because it's not exactly the quickest path to learning your first language; it's more focused on big computer science concepts as it is on the Java language itself. If someone is completely new to programming it might be a bit overwhelming to not be given solid practice with a language before talking about complex subjects like recursive implementation of sorting and searching algorithms and their Time Complexity measurements as this book does.

I have my reservations about the currently accepted choice of Java as the first "teaching language" in most universities but here is where the book shines: it does a great job of framing Java within the world of other languages. Lower level features not in Java like pointers are talked about. The book works with a non-standard library called stdlib which emulates C's printf as well as some providing some really nice classes for creating graphical elements, bridging the gap to higher level languages like Javascript and providing the satisfaction of some real feedback. I believe this library is authored at Princeton University, where the book is used.

If you are a self-learner looking to learn your first language I wouldn't really recommend this book unless you're a very fast learner or you supplement it with some real Java language learning and practice. The latter might even be my recommendation if you are using this text book in college and don't already have some programming experience.

G Fuel Bahama Mama Tub (40 Servings) Elite Energy and Endurance Formula 9.8 oz. Inspired by Roman Atwood
I'll start by saying that I deal with shift change a lot and G Fuel has been a game-changer for me. Not only with how much better it makes me feel after a shift change, but my physical performance has never been better at work. Not only that but it's a cost-effective way for me to do so. Because I use this a few times a week I try to mix up my flavors now and then. Not all the flavors are great. As an example Cotton Candy was my 2nd G Fuel Tub I ordered and it almost caused me to never try any other flavors again it was so bad. G Fuel seems to have three distinct characteristics when it comes to flavor,1 the flavor itself, 2 bitterness, 3 vitamin flavor (like the chewable Flintstone kind). This is how they rank for me.

They rank in this order

1. Bahama Mama (good flavor, no bitterness, no vitamin taste)
2. Strawberry Banana (good flavor, no bitterness, no vitamin taste)
3. Rainbow Sherbet (good flavor, very slight bitterness, no vitamin taste)
4. Strawberry Kiwi (good flavor, no bitterness, slight vitamin taste)
5. PewdiePie Lingonberry (good flavor, moderate bitterness, slight vitamin taste, very sour unlike lingonberries )
6. Cotton Candy ( okay flavor, overpowering bitterness, strong vitamin taste)
Pina Colada (And Other Early Tunes)
Pina Colada (And Other Early Tunes)
Killer album start to finish with real stand out songs:
- Pina Colada (heard on Pandora which led me to this album - I have since purchased all the Digby albums)
- 151 Lexington
- Yes Please

Just totally high quality groovy music. Afternoon, pool, work (mostly listen while I work I have to admit but I dream I am by the pool in an afternoon type setting which is why this music is so awesome).

Spend the money and get the album.

I like the overall performance of the equipment, however it is a little bit noisy, with a high pitch sound. I did not like that. The other thing I didn't like, was the fact, that I wasn't able to use my 1800 Watt induction cook stove. It just simply did not heat up at all !!!... That was a big disappointment !!!... Coming to find out, modify sine wave inverters, don't like anything with AC switches (TRIACS), and that's what induction cook stoves use to control the heat.
I loved it's appearance and performance, so much, that I bought, the 4000 watt version, pure sine wave cousin ! And it seems to work with out a hitch!

Try to do healthier or better things so wanted to try out this kind of tooth brush for my littles since my youngest likes to brush often and I can’t ever seem to find where They went. My 5 yr old like it a bit. So since my first time getting these not sure if they are all like this but my younger one also will bite down to be silly and it causes the bristles to become loose and come out and little one they get stuck in mouth and kind chokes/gags on them.

Overall happy. Soft and easy to hold.

I have loved this film since my childhood and I have been trying to get my hands on a copy for a long time now. I was hesitant to buy one of these copies as it didn't specify the Region number and I was worried it wouldn't play on my dvd player as most copies I have come across are US Region only. Anyway it arrived and played perfectly much to my delight!
I'm not going to go into specifics about the film as I am guessing that anyone buying it has already seen it and knows the story. I was slightly nervous that having not seen it in years that it might not live up to expectation as so often happens when you revisit childhood favourites but I needn't have worried, it has really stood the test of time! A really lovely film and delighted to have it in my collection.

Marvel Black Panther Legends Series Black Panther, 6-inch
When I got this figure I was especially excited for the unmasked head of Black Panther how I noticed that the likeness to actor Chadwick Boseman is very much off and only by skin it is way to melon color and black like it should be. Other than that the figure is amazing. From the poseabilty to the interchangeable heads and hands. If you have the previous Black Panther figure from the” Captain America Civil War Wave” that head fits on this figure. The poseablity is great I don’t feel like I am going to break it at all. In short if you wanted an updated Black Panther get this figure. If you want this figure for movie accuracy, you can probably pass.
Rin-Ne, Vol. 3
Rin-Ne, Vol. 3
No Rumiko Takahashi series would be complete without at least one love triangle, and apparently her latest series is no exception. "Rin-Ne Volume 3" introduces a new character who has a major thang for Sakura, and provides a little urgency in the romantic tension between Sakura and Rinne -- as well as causing some professional problems for Rinne.

There's a new transfer student at the school: Tsubasa Jumonji, a childhood friend of Sakura's who is still carrying a huge torch for her. He also happens to be a professional exorcist -- and when Rinne tries to help a ghost pass on, the boys end up locked in a huge romantic/professional rivalry. Rinne in particular is shaken by the possibility that Sakura is going to date Tsubasa (although he denies it).

First they end up clashing during a double-date with a ghost. Then when Rinne goes hunting for a ghost with a massive bounty, he discovers that Tsubasa has a connection to a bathroom ghost named Hanako, whom he exorcised as a small child. Now Hanako wants revenge -- and she is borrowing power from a terrible source.

And during the school festival, Rinne learns that a malevolent damashigami (evil shinigami) has switched faces with the school's hottest boy, and is using it to spirit away all the girls for his own ends. To save them, he'll use the most extreme means available. And finally, boys at the school are being found beaten up with their faces covered in ink, apparently because of a faceless ghost!

The big centerpiece of "Rin-Ne Volume 3" is the introduction of Tsubasa, who's the third point of a Rinne/Sakura/Tsubasa love triangle -- he's like a more ruthless, romantic, goofier version of Rinne, and Takahashi makes us like him even if we're rooting for Rinne. Even more important, he seems to be lighting a fire under Rinne, even though the young shinigami is still in complete denial about his feelings.

He also introduces a rather different dynamic to Takahashi's story, since now our hero is in constant competition and Rokudo is kind of worried ("EMERGENCY! Sakura-sama's walking home all friendly with a boy!"). But Takahashi doesn't lean too hard on the love triangle -- the focus is still firmly on ghosts and their troublesome problems.

She also packs this manga with all sorts of weird attacks (toilet paper, Bibles and a girly-looking wand) and hilarious moments ("I'M IN THE RED," Rinne says, crying tears of blood), as well as some rather impressive magical battles. And there's the one thing required of most manga: Rinne ends up spending most of a chapter running around in a maid costume... and he looks darn good.

"Rin-ne Volume 3" adds some tension to Rumiko Takahashi's supernatural series, as well as some typically weird ghostly matters -- and it promises to get even better now that Tsubasa's here.
Catch My Heart (Stanislaskis)
Catch My Heart (Stanislaskis)
If you already have this series, this is not a seventh book like Amazon lists, but instead a combo of the first two stories. As always, Nora Roberts is an EXCELLENT read, and I love this series. I was heartbroken when doing more research to find that this wasn't a seventh book, but a combo of the first two, and would like to save others my pain. ;)
Courting Catherine: The Calhoun Women, Book 1
Courting Catherine: The Calhoun Women, Book 1
I like big thick books, and I love big thick books in series that keep me going for days at a time. And I like good strong, believable characters. Unfortunately these books are not that thick, but two out of three isn't bad. Especially do I like Nora Roberts novels. I am gratefull that she is allowing them all to come out in Kindle editions, because I missed a few of them, even though I was a librarian while she was writing them. She is very very good at all three of these criteria. Catherine Calhoun, better known as CC is a beautiful strong woman who just happens to operate a garage and work on automobiles for a living. The other part that is hard to believe is that she and her family live in a castle built built on a rocky cliff, and they are poor as church mice. There is a family legend,of course--concerning a mean, hardhearted woman killing ancestor, his beautiful wife and a treasure worth millions. That's where the tension that all successful novels have to have comes from. Okay, all that is hard to believe, but remember Ms. Roberts knows how to create charcters you want to believe, that you want to succeed, that you wish you knew. Along comes a very wealthy, very handsome young man who has a plan to save the girls, and he, of course needs his car fixed, and CC runs the only garage in town. He falls in love with her, of course, this being a Nora Roberts novel. But the falling in love and the courting are throughly entertaining. This is the first book in the series. Go ahead buy all four of them at once, get your box of tissues, and a soft drink and get ready to throughly enjoy yourself.

Black Jack, Vol. 3
Black Jack, Vol. 3
This volume of Black Jack is the most satisfying yet. Tezuka had me in tears at points and laughing at others. Yes, it is possible to be moved to tears by the stories written by the "God of Manga." Some of the stories are straightforward "morality tales" and others are more opaque. Sometimes he ties his stories up nicely with a little bow at the end. Other times, he leaves us to just think. In this volume, we get to know Pinoko, his adorable sidekick a little better. After all the stories, we still don't understand why Black Jack is so demanding of money. Where does it all go?

Osamu Tezuka is known as the "God of Manga" in Japan. He single-handedly made Manga respectable after WWII and pioneered the use of cinematic techniques. He not only entertained the public with characters like "Astro Boy" but he tackled more weighty subjects such as nuclear danger, Buddhism, and care for the environment. He created a "studio" of star characters, like a "Disney for Japan."

Tezuka's most autobiographical character is "Black Jack." Before becoming an artist full-time, Tezuka graduated from medical school. Black Jack is a "super doctor," an un-licensed maverick who is a fantastic surgeon. His exploits are so over-the-top, he must be Tezuka's dream of what a doctor could be. The actual medical terminology used, based on Tezuka's actual knowledge, add a level of realism and interest to the stories.

With fast-paced writing and kinetic artwork, once you start reading Black Jack, you won't be able to put it down.
Roald Dahl 15 Book Box Set
Roald Dahl 15 Book Box Set
I bought these to read to my 4 year old son for bedtime. He loves all the classics like Danny Champion of the World, The Twits & George's Marvellous Medicine etc. We have re-read these many times. I may have been a little harsh in only giving four stars, but there are a couple of other autobiographical books in this collection which I have started to read and then deemed not entirely suitable for young listeners.
I guess, as all the titles were clearly listed infront of me, I should have researched it properly. But I didnt and now I have a couple of books which are not touched. So I point this one, in case others are thinking of this box set as purely a reading source for 4/5 year olds.

Mary Ann and Bill (The Mary Ann Stories Book 8)
Mary Ann and Bill (The Mary Ann Stories Book 8)
This, sadly, is the last of the Mary Ann novels. I would love for there to be more. I would like to read about Mary Ann up till she enters a nursing home or passes on. She has been a ton of fun at every age so far. In this one she is 27 years old. Her twins, Rose Mary and David are still six and still getting into trouble. David has learned to swear and Rose Mary always gets her way. On top of these troublesome twins, Mary Ann now has to deal with a bull terrier, Bill.

At first, things don't look good for Bill, the barmy bull terrier. He tears up Mary Ann's chairs and piddles and poos on her kitchen floor. But Mary Ann has a lot more on her mind when her husband Corny starts making "google" eyes at a young girl working nearby who obviously has Corny marked as her latest "bull's eye."

Things just may work out all right tho and Bill may have a paw in it. I laughed out loud four or five times and even got a bit onion eyed at the end. A fabulous ending to a terrific series.
The Rescue
The Rescue
Have read and enjoyed a few of Nicholas Sparks books and movies and decided to check this one out when I saw it was available in Kindle form and a good price. This book is about Denise and her son Kyle who end up in a car accident. Denise passes out for at least a couple minutes and in that time her son Kyle goes missing. The local fire department and several volunteers go looking for the child as it is night time and the temperature is falling. The search is made a little more complicated by the fact the kid has developmental issues and is not likely to answer out to the researchers looking for him. Things look more and more hopeless until one of the firemen, Taylor starts to think like the child instead of an adult and from there figures out what direction the kid might have gone and where he might have hidden. He finds the child to the very relief of the rescuers and the grateful mother who has been at the hospital quite anxious to hear word of her son.

Taylor bonds with the fireman who rescued him and as the friendship between the little boy and the fireman grows so does the friendship/relationship between Taylor and Denise. Taylor hasn't been too successful in his relationships in the past, but his friends Mitch and Melissa see something different when they see him around Denise. His feelings for Denise appear to be much greater then the other few women he's been serious about and they are excited that maybe he's finally ready to settle down. But inexplicablly after several months of happiness together, Mitch starts to pull away as usual and Denise is left very confused as well as angry as he's not just pulling away from her but her son as well. It's one thing to hurt her, but it's another thing to hurt her son.

Taylor is also a bit reckless as he takes too many chances when it comes to the worst of fires. Where someone else might give up at a certain point and declare it a lost cause, he'll continue on until the job is done. It's like Taylor's need to be a fireman stems from something then just aspiring to be in a job which serves other people. Especially since the firefighting is voluntarily as he as his own business doing construction.

A tragedy towards the end of the book could either send him permanently away from Denise and really living or it could finally provide the opportunity to expose his demons and explain why he's a firefighter and also why he always pushes women away. This was another Nicholas Sparks book that was quite touching and I'll probably read more Nicholas Sparks book in the future.
Downton Abbey Season 1
Downton Abbey Season 1
Downton Abbey Series I confirms that there is nothing that comes close to a British made Period drama, especially this one and 'Cranford'and 'Lard Rise to Candleford'. In fact, in spite of the fact that Downton Abbey took the Emmy Award for 2011, i personally thought that the latter two were the better films and this is due to the fact that the plot in Downton Abbey sometimes stretches the line of credibility.

Having said the above, this sumptious costume drama set in England in the years leading up to the First World War about the complicated community of Downton Abbey makes rivetting television viewing. It is about the lives of the Crawley family that have owned Downton Abbey for generations and the lives of the servants of this prestigious family.

I will not elaborate on the plot, other than to say the servants know the secrets of the family while the family know so few of theirs.

The acting from the whole cast is impeccable and while Maggie Smith has been singled out, they all give magnificent performances. Needless to say the cinemtography is outstanding and the attention to detail brilliant. Just one small thing in the opening to the film, the camera follows telephone lines, multiple ones, that would not have been in place at that time(I'm being picky!!!).

An excellent TV series worthy of place in your film collection.
QBSM Unisex Adult Halloween Velvet Cloak with Hood Long Witch Costume Vampire Raven Cosplay Capes
QBSM Unisex Adult Halloween Velvet Cloak with Hood Long Witch Costume Vampire Raven Cosplay Capes
Great cape/cloak for witches costume! Purchased the large size (which says is 59" length from collar to hem) and I am 5'3" tall. When I stand still, about an inch or so of the material rests on the floor. This is the exact look I was going for!

The black material is gorgeous! It has a bit of sheen to it with the velvet material. It is not too heavy, and flows behind me when I walk. The hood is a nice, large size, and conceals my head perfectly when I use it.

There are obviously some more heavy-duty cloaks out there if you are willing to pay good money for them. This one is lighter weight; the seams are a bit weak around the edges, and because it is folded when arrived, I suggest hanging it for a while before use to try to get the creases out (I am hoping that works for me). But all in all, this is a great value for the price, and I am excited to wear it on Halloween!
Memoirs of a Geisha
Memoirs of a Geisha
I loved the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha" and its soundtrack. The haunting reoccurring themes help to give the perfect atmosphere to the movie. I had read a very scathing review of the soundtrack that called it "forgettable, " which is the exact opposite of what the soundtrack is. I found the music did exactly what it was supposed to do in musically illustrating and complementing the film and setting the mood. The lovely melodies really stuck in my mind and I could not wait to get a copy of the soundtrack. Bravo to Mr. Williams, Yo Yo Ma and Isak Perlman for doing such a superb job of musically interpreting the story!
Defender Security U 9513 Latch Shield, 12 in., Steel, Gray, In-Swinging Doors
Defender Security U 9513 Latch Shield, 12 in., Steel, Gray, In-Swinging Doors
The manufacturer or vendor really should include directions, which is why I left off one star. It's not a conceptually difficult item to install, with the strong caveat that it's critical to double-measure your drill holes and ensure your tolerances between the two units is such that your door can shut normally, AND assuming you have a deadbolt, that it will work.
With that in mind, with the door shut and all locks engaged, align the two pieces. Then, let the door-mounted piece slide out, and mark the holes on the piece that's on the jamb.
After drilling, use two of the Philips head screws for the piece that goes on the jamb; that's the unit that will ultimately have the one-way screws.
When that's mounted, drill and install the piece that goes on the door.
NOW, operate the door exactly as you would, from both the inside and outside. E.g., from the inside, lock the deadbolt. Is it just as snug and tight as before, but without requiring pushing on the door to lock the deadbolt? Because you want the door to easily close and lock, especially if your wife is going to use it. You'll be very unpopular if she has to muscle the door to engage and unlock the deadbolt.
After you've worked all locks and checked tolerances, both inside and out, you can remove the Philips head screws from the unit on the jamb, and install the one-way screws. Some reviewers said they spent $10 for a special drill piece for the one-way screws--that's not necessary if you've properly drilled your holes with the correct size drill bit.
My sense is that many of us would intuitively understand all of this without directions, but reading explicit directions in advance, whether its for this project or any other, is the difference between a smooth installation or something more like disaster. We've probably all experienced that and hope to avoid repeat performances.
And, as reality may have taught you in the past, once those one-way screws are in, THEY ARE IN, which, of course, is why they are a reliable deterrent to would-be burglars. Good luck folks.

Design Toscano Sous la Vigne Pedestal Plant Stand, Dimensions: 15" Wx15 Dx36 H 43 lbs, Bronze
From what I’ve seen, Design Toscano offers pieces for big ranges of styles and budgets. Without an eye towards collecting the Design Toscano brand in particular, I have a small assortment that makes me happy. One of the oldest, and a favorite, is a piece called Witchie Witch. Even though it has a Halloween theme, we keep it on display all year for its eclectic appeal and ability to start conversations. The Sous la Vigne Pedestal Plant Stand is the most recent to come our way. While it’s the total opposite in looks and style of Witchie Witch, this fat cheeked cherub plant stand is equally quirky and appealing. It’s not huge at 27 x 19 x 33", but it’s big enough to be noticeable because it’s finished to look like a 18th-century classic rococo bronze statue (this is made of resin). It’s elaborate, ornamental and over the top enough to start conversations.
HAV-A-HANK Genuine MADE IN USA Bandanna Handkerchief 22 in Extra Large Bandana [5 Pack] (Navy)
HAV-A-HANK Genuine MADE IN USA Bandanna Handkerchief 22 in Extra Large Bandana [5 Pack] (Navy)
I bought these Made in America bandanas because Chinese bandanas never soften up. I have used bandanas since the 1970’s and every single one of them, American Made, would become buttery smooth after several washings. I wore glass eyeglasses decades ago and used those soft bandanas to clean my glasses because they didn’t scratch the lenses. Being soft like that also made them more useful and absorbent for a lot of daily tasks especially mopping a sweaty brow.

These Havahanks are true to size and havent’t faded but they are perpetually stiff. Since I ordered a 5-pack about 5-6 months ago I have washed all of them every week and they are just as stiff as the day I received them so they will always be half as useful as they should be.

American Made, Chinese Made, what’s the difference? Is there any place on Planet Earth where I can get a soft bandana?

Maybe I can use them some day to polish a turd....sigh

BeVisible Sports Plantar Fasciitis Sock - Compression Foot Sleeves for Men & Women For Plantar Fasciitis Heel Pain Relief With Arch Support
I'm so excited! I could hardly wait to receive my BeVisible compression sleeves after reading all the rave reviews. I work very long hours on my feet and experience significant foot pain after 4 hours and on into 10 or so. I just got the sleeves yesterday, (size Large for ladies size 10 shoe -- perfect fit) and putting them on I felt like my feet were being thoroughly massaged and supported -- just a heavenly sensation! I cannot wait to try them out at work tomorrow. I'll post a followup review when I know how they work for the long haul, but I do have high hopes!
UPDATE:
I have to say these sleeves ARE really helping to get me through arduously long workdays on my feet. The compression is very soothing and even the added warmth of the socks brings relief, but most of all it's the quite noticeable arch and ankle support they give. Going on hour 10 my feet still begin to hurt, but definitely nowhere near as much as they did without the sleeves, and I'll take that! -- any amount of pain relief is worth every penny. For the bulk of the day, the sleeves get me through with flying colors.

I'm thrilled I discovered these. I will be buying more. Thanks for a GREAT product.
Moonglow
Moonglow
The new Avantasia album is an entertaining release with some solid songs but it unfortunately ends up being one of the weakest albums in the project's discography. While there is plenty of variety covering symphonic rock, pop rock, power metal, heavy metal, AOR and ballads, the songwriting is not as captivating as it was in the past.

The instrumental portion of the album is handled as usual by Tobias Sammet on bass and lead vocals, Sascha Paeth (ex-Heaven's Gate) on guitars, Felix Bohnke (Edguy) on drums and Michael Rodenberg responsible for the orchestrations. The list of guest vocalists includes Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Jorn Lande (ex-Ark, ex-Masterplan), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), Michael Kiske (Helloween, Unisonic), Geoff Tate (ex-Queensryche), Bob Catley (Magnum), Candice Night (Blackmore's Night), Mille Petrozza (Kreator) and Eric Martin (Mr. Big).

“Book of Shallows” is the heaviest song on offer and one of the best ones as well. It is fast paced and includes some powerful and heavy guitar riffs, a catchy chorus and nice vocal transitions between Hansi Kürsch, Ronnie Atkins, Jorn Lande and Mille Petrozza.

“Alchemy” probably contains the best chorus on the album and is another highlight. It is an atmospheric mid tempo melodic metal song with a darker atmosphere and some welcome heavier riffs. Geoff Tate blends well with Tobias Sammet and offers some nice vocal work that harkens back to Queensryche.

“Requiem for a Dream” is a fast power metal song with a soaring chorus and a major highlight. This is the only song to feature Michael Kiske on vocals and as usual he provides a stunning performance showing off his power and upper range. Although it is a signature Avantasia song it just works great and provides a twist with its atmospheric church chant intro and the inclusion of a bass solo.

“The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” is not perfect but generally works well and is another standout song. It is one of the longest tracks and the only to feature that many singers sharing vocals. The song includes some irritating modern keyboards and its chorus is similar to the Avantasia song Another Angel Down, but it is bombastic, catchy and features one of the best guitar solos on the album. In addition, guest vocalists Atkins, Lande, Martin, Catley and Tate do an admirable job and make the track a little more memorable.

Moonglow’s biggest flaw is the absence of catchy choruses on several tracks and the feeling of déjà vu in several song passages. The epic “The Raven Child” is the perfect example as it includes a Blind Guardian inspired intro, Iron Maiden and Savatage influences, an ending section that is identical to the Avantasia song The Scarecrow and a rather unmemorable chorus. Despite some great vocal work by Jorn Lande the whole thing ends up sounding unoriginal, boring and long. Another drawback is the general absence of guitar solos in the album. The last negative aspect of Moonglow is the fact that Tobias Sammet sings on all songs and doesn’t leave much room for the guest vocalists to fully unveil their talents.

Moonglow is definitely weaker when compared to the previous album Ghostlights. It is not a bad album as it is inspired, bombastic and offers some memorable moments, but it is not great either. It will probably sound good and interesting for someone not familiar with Avantasia, but for older fans it has unfortunately little to offer.
Minnetonka Men's Sheepskin Ankle Boots
Minnetonka Men's Sheepskin Ankle Boots
Took them out of the box, flipped up the collar and put em on my feet. Aside from one rainy day, this is the only shoe I've worn for the last 2 weeks. I know, I know...they're house shoes, but they're so dang comfortable I don't want to take them off. I figured I'd give them a bit so I could give a decent review. So, here we are two weeks later and I'm still a happy camper. My feet stay warm, comfy and cozy in these.
Very happy with the fit. I wear a size 10 boot so I ordered a size 10. They fit well without socks, a little bit tight at first but after wearing them for about an hour they fit perfect. Started wearing a light sock with them as well and they stretched a bit more and fit perfectly once again. I normally wear minnetonka moccasins anyway, but the lining and padding in these make them much more comfortable. When I eventually wear these out I will definitely be purchasing another pair to replace them.
Oh, and by the by, I wear them mostly around the house and taking the trash out to the curb, but even after a trip to Bass Pro and a couple of trips to the grocery store they still look and feel brand new and I'm normally tough on shoes.

Fables Vol. 7: Arabian Nights (and Days) (Fables (Graphic Novels))
Fables Vol. 7: Arabian Nights (and Days) (Fables (Graphic Novels))
This book spends a lot of its time bringing the eastern tales into the world of fables, from Djinns and Genies through to Ali-Baba etc. I was very impressed that these tales were interwoven and a different perspective was taken than from the traditional western fairy tales we are used too. However I did feel that the narrative flow of the main story was slightly held back by this decision.
Overall I am still in love with Fables and cannot wait to read the next instalment

OSP Home Furnishings Oakley Mid-Century Modern Bucket Chair, White
Love it!!! It always feels like I’m flipping a coin when the product doesn’t have a lot of reviews or ratings (or customer photos) yet and the ones I do have to go on aren’t exactly offering high praise. But I figured it wasn’t that expensive, especially since I just bought one for my desk as opposed to a set of 4 for a table or something, so I went ahead and ordered. I’m glad I did! Arrived on time and very well packaged, but also didn’t require a machete and breaking a sweat to open and unwrap, which was nice. Literally 1 step to assemble it... just 4 screws to attach the base to the seat. Allen wrench included in case you don’t have 47 of them lying around already for no apparent reason like I do, and the 4 little black pieces (see pics) are actually just spare feet thingies (very technical I know) to attach to the end of the legs to prevent scratching the floor. There was already a set attached, so those are just extras - also nice 👌🏼 The faux leather looks beautiful and the white (what I ordered) is a true pure white, not ivory or anything. Just sat in it to test out the comfort level, and it’s as expected. It’s not a down-filled recliner with lumbar support and I ordered it knowing I might throw a sheepskin over it if I plan to be working at my desk for long periods. But as someone with chronic back pain (slipped disc in my lower back) I don’t immediately notice any issues sitting in it. Again, it’s a plastic chair and I knew that when buying it so just manage your expectations 🤷🏻‍♀️ Overall I’m very happy with it! Super easy to unpackage and assemble, included bonus spare parts, as comfy as you can expect of a plastic chair with minimal padding, and looks awesome!! I included a bunch of pictures to hopefully reassure anyone who was has the same hesitation I did about a product with few reviews. Definitely recommend if you’re on the fence!

I quit smoking almost 7 years ago. I know, that is great for me, and honestly, I have absolutely felt better for it. Unfortunately, not everyone around me has quit.
I can literally smell my son when he hits my driveway. I am so sensitive to the smell now, it is terrifying. It made me realize that I used to smell like that. How did I convince myself my father didn't know I was smoking at 12?
So while I love my son, that smell follows him into my car, and it lingers. Sometimes for days.
Well, not anymore.
This little air purifier is enough to freshen up the smell of my far in just a few minutes, and helps even while he, or any other smoker, is in the car. I know, you can roll the windows down. But honestly, it isn't always an option. I have a lot of sensitive paperwork in the car that I can't afford to have blowing around. I also don't love the -20 winds blowing in the winter either.
Now, I don't have to worry about all that.
My car smells better, and everyone is more comfortable.
It is a win for everyone involved.
I like of course how well it works. I also like that it runs off of USB, so it can also come with me to the office when I'm stuck going in to the cube farm every now and again.
The unit is sturdily constructed, so I am not afraid of it falling apart at the slightest bump. It does make a whirring, and in a quiet office or really well sound proofed car it might be an issue, but honestly, with my stereo on at even the most moderate volume I can't hear this at all.
Very happy with it, as it is actively making my life better, and more bearable.
