Warren Buffett on Business: Principles from the Sage of Omaha
Warren Buffett on Business: Principles from the Sage of Omaha
With the main exception of a relatively small textile producer known as Berkshire Hathaway, which Warren Buffett bought outright and which became the springboard for his investing career, the earlier part of Buffett's long and successful career was mainly devoted to non-controlling investments in companies, versus buying whole companies. Thus, today many people think of Buffett as "the world's most successful investor." However, Buffett's investing skills are not the primary topic of this relatively brief and easy reading book (although there is one chapter on personal investing). This book, written by Richard Connors and based on a class he taught about Buffett at the Washington University in St. Louis Lifelong Learning Institute, is devoted to describing Buffett's management activities as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. That's not a bad idea at all, given that over the years Buffett has gradually placed comparatively less emphasis on Berkshire's investments (which today include the likes of American Express, Coca-Cola and Wells Fargo) and greater emphasis on Berkshire's growing stable of wholly-owned subsidiaries. Indeed, the list of owned companies, like GEICO, International Dairy Queen, Shaw Industries, FlightSafety, Borsheim's Fine Jewelry, Nebraska Furniture Mart and The Pampered Chef, among numerous others, has grown quite large.

The prime source for this book--by far--is Buffett's annual letters to Berkshire's shareholders, written over the last 40 years. Indeed, if you were to count words, my guess is that 95% or more of this book is simply the reproduction of Buffett's comments in his various letters, organized by Connors, the book's author. So if you have read Buffett's letters over the years (an exercise I would recommend to almost anyone interested in business or investing), then you won't find much new material in this book, save for excerpts from occasional interviews with Charlie Rose or excerpts from some of Buffett's other interviews or comments.

Connors has organized Buffett's shareholder commentaries into chapters that address the various important issues of corporate management: executive compensation, time management, assessment of risk, corporate governance and culture, crisis management, capital allocation and shareholder communication, among others. Buffett's comments are interesting, valuable and candid, and he is a very clear and entertaining writer. There is some human interest material, such as an account of Buffett's 1951 Saturday trip to Washington, DC to visit the offices of GEICO (because his mentor, Benjamin Graham, was the chairman of the company). As the somewhat well-known story goes, Buffett pounded on the door to GEICO's locked building, until a custodian finally led him to meet Lorimer Davidson, an assistant to GEICO's president at the time. Davidson, who would go on to become CEO of GEICO, took the time to educate young Buffett on the power of direct marketing of insurance, and years later Buffett would go on to buy the whole company.

In short, although there is precious little new material provided here (hence the four-star rating, not five), this is a very interesting book, and it is interesting primarily because it was essentially written by Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors--and corporate managers--of all time.

Greatest Hits: Vols. 1-3
Greatest Hits: Vols. 1-3
The recording quality is superb. These appear to be remastered, though some of the songs are mono, not stereo.

The box set comes in nice packaging and it includes a booklet of liner notes and some photos. This is a very nice, unexpected addition. This box set would make a very nice gift to send to a friend or family member.

The songs are not in chronological order that they were recorded. This is fine, because the tracks are arranged more story-like. One song will follow another to complete a tale at times.

The best to be said is that the recording quality is excellent. Also, tracks are normalized to each other, so you won't be adjusting the volume constantly or have to do this labor yourself if you draw the same tracks from your collection.

Lastly, the box set arrived in two days, not four to seven. I am very happy with Amazon's service. However, I didn't suspect it had arrived, so I got to my mailbox a day late. I coulda hadda party, but that's my fault, not Amazon's.

Overall, this is either a beginner's set or a set of his best sellers, normalized in volume to each other if you already have some Dylan albums, and it comes with nice liner notes with photos. You can't lose!

If you like Dylan, don't hesitate. The price is right for what you get. I'm sure that any Dylan fan will enjoy this!

Rustichella pastas are the absolute best pastas we've ever had. When we lived in Italy for 3 years, we didn't have pasta this good anywhere over there. We didn't know about the Rustichella d'Abruzzo makers of pasta when we were there. I Googled this family of fine pasta makers and was very impressed by their methods. It's thanks to Amazon.com that we can have this exceptional treat now.
Thoreau at Walden (The Center for Cartoon Studies Presents)
Thoreau at Walden (The Center for Cartoon Studies Presents)
Thoreau at Walden by John Porcellino is a graphic treatment based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Using simple line drawings and selected excerpts from Thoreau's Walden, Porcellino retells the story of America's first environmentalist and his experiences living at Walden Pond.

The book begins with an outstanding introduction by D.B. Johnson introducing Thoreau to readers.

The body of the book is displayed comic-style with a mixture of captions and speech bubbles. Those who already know the story will enjoy picking out the famous quotes and anecdotes, while students new to Thoreau will be provided with an introduction that's likely to stimulate further reading. Although many of the famous quotes are included, many are left out. It's interesting to think about what you would include and exclude in creating this type of graphic interpretation.

The last section of the book provided insights into the way Porcellino wove Thoreau's text throughout the book. It was particularly interesting to read passages by Thoreau that appear as wordless illustrations in the book. For instance, Thoreau's experience with an owl is told by Porcellino without the use of words.

I envision teachers pairing this experience with the Henry series by D.B. Johnson including Henry Hikes to Fitchberg. It would also be interesting for young people to take a virtual visit to Walden Pond using Google Earth. Those interested in reading the entire works of Henry David Thoreau can read most of them at Websites online.

This is one in a series of graphic biographies from The Center for Cartoon Studies. Each book provides an interesting insight into a well-known person.

I highly recommend Thoreau at Walden along with the other graphic biographies from The Center for Cartoon Studies.
Black Rose (In The Garden Book 2)
Black Rose (In The Garden Book 2)
Over one hundred years ago, a young woman on the brink of insanity...or just beyond it...disappeared without a trace. Her ghost haunts the house and grounds of the Harper household and has for as long as anyone alive can remember. Most who have seen or heard her speak of the care she shows to the children of the house, singing lullabies to the young and offering a comforting presence to young mothers. But there is a darkness, too, and when lullabies become edged in madness and comfort turns to terror, a group of family and friends must ban together to find out who their ghost is, where she is, if they have any hope of surviving her wrath.

Rosalind Harper is a strong, independent, mature woman. She lost a husband young, made a mistake with a second marriage, but has lived a life of class and poise, correcting mistakes and building her life from tragedy. She may be the mistress of Harper House, but her focus is her family and her business, the In the Garden nursery. Since the events of

The Matchmakers (The Americana Series Book 8)
One of my very favorite Janet Dailey books. Rereading it was a delight. My son was born in 1983 and I named him Jordan. When people asked me where I got the name I always told the truth; that he was named after a character in a romance novel.

WOW! Stuff Collection Stylus Wands-Harry Potter
WOW! Stuff Collection Stylus Wands-Harry Potter
I use this stylus to play Wizards Unite on a Note 8. My daughter used it on her iPhone 11 for Pokemon Go. It worked great for both. The disc tip glides easily for games and swipe texting. I'm using it to write this review. It is smaller than a normal pen size stylus, but it is not an issue for me. The only downside is the tip can easily be lost. They send an extra one, but for someone who wants to put this in and out of their pocket it would be real annoying. I am just careful with it. It shipped fast and exactly as expected.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Again Harry Potter has to suffer that yearly recurring torture: Holidays with the Dursleys. Harry gets increasingly frustrated when he feels ignored by his friends Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Sirius Black. He does not even get a single letter from his Hogwarts friends. Sulking about their behaviour he flees the Dursley's house only to fall into the hands of his Dudley and his hoodies. Suddenly Harry and his nephew get attacked by Dementors and our well-loved wizard apprentice is forced to cast a Patronus charm. This exhibit of magic is certainly not to the liking of Cornelius Fudge, head of the Ministry of Magic. Fudge is determined to put an end to the troubles caused by Harry Potter and charges him with performing underage magic. This is only the beginning of Harry's troubles. Even if he gets cleared of all guilt, it might be that his fifth year at Hogwarts is going to be more than he bargained for.

As the Harry Potter series continues the size of the books increases at an equal pace. J.K. Rowling indeed fills these episodes to the brim with colorful details and side stories. This must certainly be part of the gigantic appeal these books have on its audience. Nevertheless, it also means that the main storyline gets almost completely hidden by this flood of information. This is certainly valid for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix where Harry's mission only seems a side issue to the narrative that explains the identity crisis with which the Ministry of Magic is struggling. Luckily in this case, this part of the story -mainly taken up by the amazingly otherworldly Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister- is actually the most memorable. Although the characterization of Umbridge turns out quite one dimensional, it still has enough momentum to lead to many wonderfully crazy situations.

The underlying theme of the book is clearly the isolation of Harry's character in respect to his environment and friends. It comes to play most prominently during the extremely dark denouement of the story. This episode is clearly the darkest of the series so far. Throughout the story you feel that J.K. Rowling is prepping us for a dark and sinister final episode. If she is able to keep up the pace, the final book promises to become a treat that will blow the mind of all Potter-fans. Still two books to go before all is revealed!
The Last Battle of the Civil War: United States versus Lee, 1861-1883 (Southern Literary Studies)
The Last Battle of the Civil War: United States versus Lee, 1861-1883 (Southern Literary Studies)
The official name is Arlington National Cemetery. This is the name used in documents, records and formal correspondence. Arlington, just that one word, is all that needs to be said. Arlington, floods us with vivid images; the Tomb of the Unknowns, JFK's grave, lines of white crosses each with a small American Flag. Since 1861, America buries her honored dead there. To be buried at Arlington is an honor and a privilege reserved for a select few. Arlington celebrated in song and the centerpiece of novels holds a unique place in America's heart.

In 1861, Arlington is a 1,100-acre hillside estate located in Virginia dominating Washington City in the District of Columbia. From the main house you can see the White House, the Washington Monument and the Capitol building. The estate is owned by Mary Custis Lee, wife of Colonel Robert E. Lee, who is on extended leave settling his Father-in-laws estate. Under the terms of the will Mary Custis Lee owns the estate. After her death of Lee's wife, George Washington Custis Lee inherits Arlington. The American Civil War upsets this line of secession when the Lees join the Confederacy and Arlington is occupied by the Federal Government.

War brings out both the best and the worst of human nature; heroics and sacrifice vie with hate revenge. Civil war intensifies the hate and revenge with families and friends splitting apart. Arlington is an example of this, as the Federal Government passed laws to punish rebels by seizing their property for a variety of reasons. Laws were passed and procedures established to facilitate these seizures. During the war, people applauded the government's seizing property. In the years after the war these actions acquired a different perspective. Courts ruled against the government awarding compensation for these seizures. Turning over a farm or paying compensation to the average ex-Confederate is one thing. Returning a national cemetery and a Freeman's village to Robert E. Lee's son is a different story entirely! George Washington Custis Lee understood that he would never own his Grandfather's estate. He had no expectation or desire of exhuming the dead soldiers or evicting the Freeman from their homes. However, he did want compensation and tried to secure it through political channels. The simple truth is that no Republican controlled Congress would pass legislation paying a Lee for anything. Reluctantly, as time was running out, George Washington Custis Lee sued the United States Government.

Post Civil War America is about property. The public demands law respects and protects personal property. If property is lost or damaged, by the government, the owner has the right to compensation. Their is almost no question in the public's mind on this point. While the government is sovereign and not subject to being sued persons occupying the property can be sued. Legal history is difficult and tricky. The author has to make the laws understandable while capturing the difference between then and now. If they fail, the result is an incomprehensible book that cures insomnia. Success opens a door to the past showing application of law and the workings of the judicial system.

This book is a unique look at America in the years after the war. Reconstruction is dead. America in the early stages of Reconciliation, neither side is sure if this is possible or wanted. Republicans still control national politics but Democrats are changeling this. Anthony J. Gaughan succeeded in showing this America through one interesting lawsuit. The book clearly explains the law, court procedures and politics making an interesting, readable book.

getting solder out of the teeth on my files is my goal and any wire brush does not really do that. I took a piece of copper tube about half an inch in diameter and use that to scrub them. it can be slow going, wonder if someone makes a wheel shaped copper one? it does work ok just to get random gunk off, but i'm not sure that is even necessary. the file teeth are sharp enough. i use swiss-cut (double cut) files mostly
CyberGhost VPN - Fast & Secure WiFi protection
CyberGhost VPN - Fast & Secure WiFi protection
As soon as the 46th day hit & I was unable to cancel service & request a refund all the issues started!

After that all the CyberGhost apps started to randomly boot me from VPN and would receive alerts asking if I wanted to protect my connection. I was already connected like really?!?!?!

Next I could no longer connect to the optimized servers at all.
I tried in many several platforms and several internet services and CYBERGHOST isn't functioning properly at all.

I contacted customer support multiple times and they are like robots recycling the same standard copy and paste paragraphs in the replies.
I'm now seeking a more reliable provider with better support.

OFM ESS Collection Bonded Leather Executive Chair with Arms, in Black (ESS-6025)
OFM ESS Collection Bonded Leather Executive Chair with Arms, in Black (ESS-6025)
I have purchased no less than three office chairs in recent months before this one, looking for just the right combination of comfort and enough room to kick back and watch a movie on Netflix at my computer desk if I want to. This chair, at the lowest price I have spent, offers everything I am looking for. Padded arm rests, enough space to bring my legs up if I want, it's comfortable to sit in, also quality materials.. For this price, wish I had known it a lot sooner! I gave the other 3 office chairs to my 3 kids. They are all happy with new chairs, and now I'm happy with this one!
Honeywell HPA200 True HEPA Allergen Remover
Honeywell HPA200 True HEPA Allergen Remover
I am allergic to grass, most trees, dust, and a certain strain of common mold. I have tried a number of air purifiers over the years to battle this. The Honeywell HPA series is the best of these by far. I have 3 HPA100's (two kids' bedrooms + my office), 1 HPA200 (master bedroom), and 1 HPA300 (living room/kitchen). They all run 24/7 keeping me alive and well. Seriously, these are the best.

They start to run more loudly when the filters need to be replaced, but I think that's just physics. I have never had a purifier that didn't do this.

Do not underestimate the pre-filters! Make sure to change those fairly often. DON'T just vacuum them; I have tried this in the past a few times and every time it just makes the filter incredibly ineffective. You need to put a NEW activated carbon filter in there as it's the activated carbon that filters many chemicals (VOCs) that are terrible for your health!

When my hands are really really dry, the buttons don't respond well to touch. This is easily solved by using two fingers instead of one!

And finally, the light can be turned dim or all the way off. This is surprisingly a very nice touch as we use them as pseudo-nightlights in the kids' rooms and turn the light off in our bedroom.

If you can afford it, make sure to go for the model that sucks in the front and blows out the top as you only have to account for one side on the horizontal. This is MUCH easier to work with in any room than the ones that suck in the back and blow out the front since you then have to make sure there's a clear path to the back and the front.

All in all a fantastic purifier. Get some extra filters now so they're ready when you need to do replacements.
