Node.js for .NET Developers (Developer Reference)
Node.js for .NET Developers (Developer Reference)
The book is written by an experienced developer but it is full of errors. For example, instead of passing "sql" as the parameter in Chapter 6, the author says that the parameter is "request". Similarly, there are many more programming errors in this book. Did someone review it before putting it on sale?

I am still giving a 2-star because I was able to learn something regarding Node.js. However, Microsoft charged $20.00 for a 80-page book. This is not worth the price.

No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram
No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram
Sarah Frier's debut book is an excellent read about the history of Instagram. Her in-depth reporting reveals numerous details about how Instagram was founded, the vision that set it apart from other similar apps at the time, the acquisition by Facebook, and the painful tensions that later arose and led the founders to eventually leave. You get the inside perspective on Silicon Valley culture and the personalities and strategies of not just Instagram, but also Jack Dorsey at Twitter and especially Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook.
As much as this reveals the inner workings of everyone's favorite lifestyle app, it also delves into Mark Zuckerberg's philosophy on growth and competition and the "family" of companies he owns - Instagram and WhatsApp. The story doesn't just provide a narrative of the history of these companies, but also gives important context about where they might be going - especially as they face grave concerns related to privacy and competition.
Writing style is great and easy to read.
I would also recommend this book to anyone feeling pressure about their public Instagram persona. This book shows how much the perfect lifestyle you see in posts is not just fake, but carefully developed and curated by marketing and design experts to make money for influencers and the brands they represent.
The Fashion Conspiracy: A Remarkable Journey Through the Empires of Fashion
The Fashion Conspiracy: A Remarkable Journey Through the Empires of Fashion
Witty, entertaining, interesting interviews with famous fashion designers and anecdotes from their lives. Its style reminded me of a well-written article in The Times. As the subtitle suggests, the focus of the book is on premium brands, and there are a lot of "old money" vs "new money" comparisons. The clientele of these brands receives almost as much attention as the designers themselves (priceless quote: "They're the best-dressed children in New York, though one of them, who is only two, has already refused to wear smocking" - one of the women about her grandchildren). This book is probably more of a study in anthropology than in fashion, but there is a lot of fashion in it too.

I wonder what Nicolas Coleridge, godfather to Cara Delevingne, would say about the modern state of the fashion industry - fashion blogs, social media and e-commerce. Maybe he could write a book about that. I'd buy it.
How We'll Live on Mars (TED Books)
How We'll Live on Mars (TED Books)
This book has plenty of good information and speculation with only a few errors. This is a topic that is extremely difficult to write about without making any mistakes at all. It's quite possible to write accurately one day and have that accuracy destroyed by new developments and discovery before actual publication. It's hard to explain to those who have not tried, the incredible breadth of knowledge required to discuss travel to and living on Mars unless that person has attempted it. As one who has essayed this effort in both fact and fiction (see ETCJournal.com and Mars Rhapsody), I can tell you it's a tough job. This book does the topic reasonable justice.

This book is designed to be read in a single sitting. As a result, it often does not plumb the depths of some topics. Quite a bit of the book details the history of the ideas of travelling to Mars, beginning with Wermer von Braun (pronounced: Verner fawn Brown).

Petranek covers the psychological, economic, and physical issues involved in getting to and living on Mars rather completely. He spends some time on Mars One and Elon Musk, suggesting that the former is a very long shot due to funding issues (I agree) and that the latter is almost guaranteed to succeed for a variety of reasons (I agree again). He spends a bit too much space on slamming NASA, albeit with some good reasons. He even indicts Richard Nixon as the primary person responsible for us not reaching Mars already.

As to the errors, they are relatively minor compared to the scope and thrust of the book. For example, the author writes, "When you run out of oxygen in a space suit, you can only breathe the carbon dioxide that you exhale for so long before you lose consciousness." In fact, you will die of carbon dioxide "poisoning" long before you use up the oxygen. Assuming that you are breathing regular air, oxygen is 20% of the content, and carbon dioxide is much less than 1%. By the time CO2 reaches 5%, O2 has dropped to just 15% because one CO2 molecule is produced for each O2 used. You have used up just 1/4 of the O2 available and are dead.

Petranek is very correct about no animals on Mars. They are much too inefficient as a source of food. He remarks that early Martian settlers will be vegetrarians. They'll actually be vegans, meaning that special attention must be paid to vitamins D and B12. These are available from sources such as yeast, lichen, and mushrooms. He also says that settlers are unlikely to produce more than ten percent of their own food. This pessimistic view contrasts strongly with some of his other optimism. Advances in genetic engineering, aeroponics, and fast hybridization should alter this forecast considerably. Self-suffciency is not just nice, it's a necessity.

The remarks on radiation are fairly accurate. Everyone should understand that radiation in space is about twice as harmful as that on Mars because cosmic rays come from all directions and are shielded from half of the cosmic sphere by Mars itself. Solar radiation also is shield half of the time, nighttime, by the planet as well.

Another pervasive issue is oxygen and atmospheric pressures. We have to have an oxygen partial pressure of around 150 millibars or so to survive. This is the pressure at the highest cities on Earth and is less than 1/6 of the pressure of the Earth's atmosphere at sea level. Even if the entire atmospheric pressure were this low, your blood would not boil. Other physiological processes may not be so amenable to low pressures. However, we should find out how low the pressure can go if we keep the partial pressure of oxygen constant at 160 millibars. Lower pressures mean lower construction costs and also have strong implications for terraforming Mars. In my book, Mars Rhapsody, I took the most optimistic view that you could live at 160 millibars of total pressure with all of it coming from oxygen.

The suggestion that plants can convert the CO2 into O2 in adequate amounts is way off. Mars has maybe 8-10 millibars of CO2. Converting it all to O2 would produce only that amount of oxygen, which is 20 or so times to low. Bacteria, lichen, and plants cannot "fix" Mars alone. We must have a much greater souce of O2. However, genetic engineering humans may be possible to make tolerating high CO2 levels and surviving with low O2 levels possible, but not without lots more O2 than you can get from plants.

The potential for genetic engineering humans to make them more radiation resistant, able to eat and metabolize plants that grow on Mars, making them able, perhaps by making them smaller, able to subsist on a limited diet, and allowing them to breathe much thinner air is explored in the book. The question not addressed is when these altered humans become a different species. What if we populate Mars to save our species but do so in such a way as to create an entirely different species? Earth humans, as we know them, may not be able to emigrate to Mars after all.

More discussion would be nit-picking. There's plenty in this book to recommend it. No one, even me, gets this entirely right, and no one knows all of the answers or even all of the problems. For a quick overview of how we'll get to Mars and how we'll live there, this is a very decent essay.

George Washington: First Guardian Of American Liberty
George Washington: First Guardian Of American Liberty
This is my first biography of George Washington, and it reads very well, with a lot of personal and historical insight. I imagined reading this story out loud to a middle school or High School History class with very good results. This is the kind of material that can really bring history to life without forcing the reader to get dragged into too much scholarly speculation or endless questioning.

I found that while the author's introduction suggested it would be a somewhat critical view of Mr. Washington, I found the facts to speak quite honestly enough for him, showing how he personally dealt with the fact that he owned slaves while he was leading one of the most unique revolutions for freedom that the world has ever seen. The author points out numerous times that the virtues and the resulting accomplishments of Mr. Washington were nearly as mythical as history claims, a rarity among epic figures of history.

It's also pretty clear from the people and the realities of that time, that we would most likely not have had a United States if slavery had been put on the table first before, bringing the union together first, with all of its myriad complexities and unprecedented risks. The history makes it very clear and it should be stressed where ever American history is taught: it was not possible to deal with both issues simultaneously; and to the nation's credit, (and through the purer virtues of that other later President), it really wasn't that long into our history (four score and seven years) until we finally faced it and dealt with it decisively.
If Not for You
If Not for You
1970年発表の『新しい夜明け』の冒頭を飾る、If Not For You。

ディランらしい、君がいないとwinter would have no springとかanyway it wouldn’t ring trueといったシンプルで誌的な表現もたっぷり味わえます。
Why Bob Dylan Matters, Revised Edition
Why Bob Dylan Matters, Revised Edition
Obviously, in the annals of popular music, the work of Bob Dylan matters. To make sense of the title and related objective of this book (which might otherwise seem presumptuous and demeaning) one has to know a little about some recent history of the politics of the Nobel Prize for Literature. (No, not the internal scandal that delayed the issuance of the 2018 Prize to 2019.) In 2016, an American hadn’t won since 1993 (Toni Morrison,) and given the relative volume of publications from America this was coming to be seen as a major “screw you” to the nation’s literary community. The Nobel committee claimed it was because American authors didn’t get their works translated and were too insular with respect to the global literary community. Still, the disparity was on the minds of many. Then, Bob Dylan was issued the Prize. While some who were offended by this disparity were placated, many thought it was an even bigger “screw you” than if the Committee again hadn’t issued it to an American – like it was a “you asked for it, you got it; now shut up for at least the next 15 years!” kind of award. I doubt anyone would deny that, as a pop music lyricist, Bob Dylan is brilliant – if not the best -- but for many that still just made him a middlin’ poet. (Dylan wrote one piece of prose poetry, “Tarantula” as well as “memoirs” [that were apparently largely an act of creative writing,] but only his lyrics could feasibly merit issue of the award.)

It was with that mess in mind that Thomas delivers this book. It seems to be his objective to not just prove that Dylan matters -- generally speaking -- but that Dylan’s work matters as literature – presumably, such that he’s at least as deserving of the Nobel Prize as any living American poet, story-writer, or novelist. The thrust of Thomas’s approach is in showing that Dylan’s work is dialed into the global literary canon. As a classicist, Thomas puts particular emphasis on Dylan’s "stealing" from, and referencing of, Greek and Roman figures like Homer and Ovid. ("Stealing" is used in the sense artists, not lawyers, use the term.) However, he does also show how Dylan uses and references other poets from Shakespeare to an obscure Confederate poet.

So, the logical question is whether Thomas answers his book’s titular question with enough authority to convince the reader that Dylan does matter. Thomas certainly convinces us why Dylan matters enough to have classes taught about him, like the one Thomas teaches a Harvard. However, I can’t say that I was convinced that Dylan is on-par with… for instance, Cormac McCarthy or Salman Rushdie (who resides in the US, as I understand it) as a major literary figure. While Thomas does show that Dylan’s work is literature because Dylan’s work is wrapped up in literature, the only real argument he offers for whether Dylan is at the highest echelon of literature is his intense fan-boy devotion. We see a lot of comments like: “He had all that he needed to write ‘Masters of War,’ the greatest anti-war song ever written.” Not “one of the best,” not “the best, in my opinion,” not “the best rock-n-roll anti-war song,” but a gratuitous presumption that nothing else could be considered in the running enough for there to be a debate. Thomas’s enthusiasm that Dylan is among the biggest artistic geniuses of our time – if not all time – is certainly potent, but not necessarily compelling.

The book is annotated, has a bibliography and a graphic discography.

I enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about the works of Bob Dylan and I found the author’s fervor for Dylan’s songs contagious -- if not altogether convincing that it merits Dylan’s inclusion with Hemingway and Faulkner as an American literary icon. [Though I would not in the least challenge his inclusion as an icon of folk, rock, or pop music.] If you’re interested in Dylan, or this question of whether he’s the best American for the job of Literary Nobel Laureate, this book is worth a read.

PowerBright 24 Volts Pure Sine Power Inverter 600 Watt, True Sine Continuous 24 Volt DC to 120 Volt AC - Perfect for an Emergency, Hurricane, Storm Outage
I use this inverter attached to a small 24v solar power system in my shed, where it powers lights, a music system, charges my power tools, and provides power for emergency communications and computers during the frequent blackouts that we experience in our area. I purchased this inverter nearly two years ago, and it is still doing well. It is portable, so also great for campers.

TCL 10L, Unlocked Android Smartphone with 6.53" FHD + LCD Display, 48MP Quad Rear Camera System, 64GB+6GB RAM, 4000mAh Battery
The TCL brand is really hitting where it counts. I was looking for a phone with a large screen that didn't cost an arm and a leg. So I turned to the TCL 10L. The phone is great but not with it's setbacks. Now this is a budget phone but they didn't sacrifice were it matters. The 6GB RAM offered definitely makes up for the lower spec processor. I didn't have any problems scrolling through the menus, playing games (PUBG, COD) and streaming videos. The storage is on the medium size 64GB but it's expandable via micro SD which makes up for it. The reception works great on this phone even though it doesn't support band 71 on the LTE bands, never had a call drop and video calls were amazing. We're this phone makes cutbacks is on the camera. No night sight, slow motion videos are super blurry, auto camera has to be super close to the object and in good light source to get a nice picture, portrait works as intended. Selfies are ok. There's also no fast charging and with the large battery in it, makes for long charging time, about 2 hours from 10% to full. Now the good thing is it uses stock Android for system management (think something like the Pixel phone) it runs very smooth. The screen is beautiful with their porpietary NXT vision enhancement. Honestly I can't wait to buy the 5G version of this phone because it will come with better cameras and better processor. But for the price this phone is amazing! Don't hesitate to buy it with confidence that you are getting a great product.

Marvel Knights: Black Panther
Marvel Knights: Black Panther
1. First, people should be aware that this is not a movie, but an 8 episode mini-series.

2. The animation style is different, somewhere between "normal" animation and a motion comic, but the art is John Romita Jr.'s and is first rate. If you are the sort of person who gets upset that not all animation looks like your favorite "cartoons", this might bother you. If you are the sort of person who can relax and appreciate a unique style for what it is, then do that, and you'll see it is appropriate and really well done.

3. The voice acting is simply STELLAR. This voice talent and direction here is superb. We even get Stan Lee himself voicing a crotchety, loud-mouthed general, and getting it just right.

4. Characters of almost infinite lameness, e.g. Klaw (the guy "made of sound") and Batroc ("the leaper") are re-imagined in interesting and subtle ways, transforming them into both credible threats and working to build a Black Panther mythos.

5. Some people are upset that the Black Panther lays the smack down on Captain America. It *is* clearly emphasized that Cap has just started out (he has the old, pointy shield to prove it) ... and this Black Panther of the WW II era has MUCH more experience. And let's be honest, the Black Panther is in Captain America's weight class (I'd put Wolverine in there too). And do you know a better way to establish a character as a formidable fighter than to show him taking down Captain America (after a hard fight)? And as "generic state department guy" reminds us, the Panther did take out the Fantastic Four, all four of them, in his first appearance (canonically, in the comics). The Black Panther is TOUGH, Cap was trespassing, assuming that an African country mainly counted as a stage for his fight with the Nazis, and the Panther showed him the door.

6. The music is remarkable, incorporating many African styles -- appropriate, since (nearly) all the action takes place in Africa. I understand the composer even created elements of the Wakandan language, appropriate that area of Africa.

7. The series succeeds in making it very much a family story, placing T'Challa's mother, uncle (the previous Black Panther), and sister front and center in the story, not pushed off to the side.

8. The series doesn't make any bones about taking place in a political context of a world where various European powers have felt that Africa belongs by right to them, rather than Africans, a history that is of course still very much with us. If you don't like your super-hero stories to touch on actual political and historical themes, go rent a Super Friends DVD, this isn't for you. (I take it back. Even the Super Friends tried to make a positive political statement, as painful and clumsy as it seems today, with characters like "Black Vulcan" and "Apache Chief '... *winces at the memory*). Is it coincidence that that the super-villain team that attacks Wakanda (which lies basically at the heart of Africa) is led by a Belgian, and includes a Frenchman, an Englishman, an American, and a Russian? (I also enjoyed Batroc's comeback to the Juggernaut's taunt about the US saving France during WW II, "Yes, you owed us one for helping you win your Revolution.")

9. The portrayal of the Roman Catholic Church is rather absurd if taken at face value -- and we're left wondering why the Black Knight is a Catholic zealot, instead of, say, a good Anglican, fighting for the Church of England. I believe the writers succeed in calling attention to the fact that political and economic imperialism rarely occur apart from religious imperialism. My guess is that this was less sloppy writing than a convenient way to portray both the Catholic Church's history in Africa as well as Great Britain's. "Christianizing and civilizing the heathen African savages" was a crucial part of the justificatory rhetoric of colonialism after all. The portrayal of organized religion is rather absurd and unfair, and does a disservice to all the good that was been done by the Church in Africa. There are more Roman Catholics in Africa today than in Europe, and it is likely that the future of Christianity will belong to Africa (at least the foreseeable future).

10. Minor point of annoyance for me: the substitution of the Juggernaut for the Rhino (who was in the comic book run). It's completely understandable why they did it: because it created an entirely plausible reason to work Ororo into the storyline. But 1. you can't stop the Juggernaut with knock-out gas. If you could, everyone would just do that, and he wouldn't be very unstoppable, now would he?; and 2. come on, who doesn't want to see THE RHINO actually in Africa? It's too hilarious NOT to do. Oh well. On the other hand, I can't think of a better way to get Storm involved in the action either.

11. In sum, Art: 5 stars, Voice acting: 5 stars, Music: 5 stars, Characters: well written and complex, Story: some implausible parts, but succeeds on a deeper level, touching on more serious social, cultural, and political issues, without being too heavy handed about it.

Iznogoud - tome 1 - Le Grand Vizir Iznogoud (French Edition)
Iznogoud - tome 1 - Le Grand Vizir Iznogoud (French Edition)

The only thing I would comment on is that this product (as I sent it back) was because of subtitles. These are in japaneese and think it would be far more clearer to indicate this on the front page of the items description and not in the small print. Also it is fair to say that when the item arrives, The packaging it is not as photographed as in the picture advertised. It is not in english.and unless you speak the language you would never read it. didnt keep the product so cant comment on the actual items quality.
Protecting the Colton Bride: A Protector Hero Romance (The Coltons of Oklahoma Book 1863)
Protecting the Colton Bride: A Protector Hero Romance (The Coltons of Oklahoma Book 1863)
This is a good continuation of the Colton series. Still much better than the first Colton family series!

Daniel Colton has been introduced to us in the previous 3 books. He's the illegitamate child of Big J Colton who had an extra-marital affair. In all the stories, Daniel feels like an outsider even though he's been raised at the ranch with his half siblings since Big J brought him to live there when his mother passed away when he was 10 years old, and they all consider him a part of their family, except for step-mother Abra Colton. Being quarter-Cherokee, he doesn't have the Colton green eyes. His self doubt of fitting in is more a reflection of Abra's rejection than all the acceptance of everyone else. This was written very well to make the reader understand that.

Daniel, since the first book, wants to establish a breeding program on the ranch. Something never done before and being looked down upon from Jack Colton, who now runs the family ranch. The Colton's are warming to the idea, but Daniel wants it to be perfect. He has a love of horses and so does Megan Talbot, a rich debutante who's run from her wealthy family to feel normal.

Megan is the only child of wealthy parents who also have a ranch. They are very manipulative and she tries to distance herself from them and their controlling nature. When her father gives her an ultimatum of returning home or he'll sell her prized horses, she's in a quandary. At the same time, Daniel knows he's viewed as the bastard son of the wealthy Colton and feels that will play into a deal he needs to make with another breeder.

This story flows well. It isn't the typical romance novel of meeting someone and the next day falling into bed with them and instantly being in love. Megan has been Daniel's assistant for months and both are attracted. Daniel keeps it to himself because he feels she's out of his league even if she weren't his employee. She sees him as her boss and can't cross that line. However, they both come to the realization at the same time that a marriage of convenience is what will help them both. Her parents will stop wanting her to marry at their presitgious level and he'll have the Talbot name to help with his business dealings.

What happens when 2 people who've been attracted to each other for months have to play up being a real married couple? Well, you connsumate a marriage of convenience and show everyone what you think are pretend feelings are real.

I liked this couple. They have so much in common you can't help but root for them as they deal with attempts on Megan's life and pretend their way to admitting their true feelings.

I also liked that Abra wasn't talked about or in this story much. She's been created to be a character you don't want to like in all the stories leading up to this one and the one time you see her in this story, it feels like this writer is going for sympathy for her. I couldn't buy into Abra being even a little bit nice to Daniel. That's not how she's been written all along. I hope in the 2 upcoming stories the writers don't try and give her yet another personality to try to get you (me) to like her. It just wouldn't flow.

Over all, a good read in the series.

Pictor's Metamorphoses
Pictor's Metamorphoses
I have The Fairy Tales of Hermann Hesse which has some stories that overlap with this book. But all works in that collection were from 1904-1918, which I think was maybe quite a bit weighed down by WWI, and made the book feel a little suppressive to read (I love that book, but it just feels like a dark place sometimes).

Pictor's Metamorphoses spans from 1900-1951, making the collection more varied, diverse, and whimsical.

My favorites in this (including overlaps with other books) by how I categorize his works in my head:

Like true fairytales: Pictor's Metamorphoses, The Three Lindens; humorous: Tales of the Wicker Chair, Conversation with a Stove; tales of one journeying on their own/soul-searching: Man of the Forests, The Painter.

Auch Death of a doxy oder Too many clients, einfach gut.

DK Biography: Harry Houdini: A Photographic Story of a Life
I was presently supprised with this book, it seemed to condense all the suprising knowledge about houdini into a neat little pocket book. As autobiographies go it goes into quite a bit of factual depth without interpritation, presenting the facts rather than muddying the water with hypothesis about houdinis motivations or feelings about certain things.
A genuinely enjoyable read.
The Bathhouse at Midnight: An Historical Survey of Magic and Divination in Russia (Magic in History)
The Bathhouse at Midnight: An Historical Survey of Magic and Divination in Russia (Magic in History)
I find this book to be extremely interesting. The author spent years studying the topic and Russian culture in general. He addresses a huge amount of data from his studies of Russian magic and divination.

What I find most interesting about the book is that he examines some of the accepted ideas from scholarship about Russian culture and asks if they are valid. He argues, for example, that "dvoeverie" is not a uniquely Russian phenomenon, but that it is typical of many cultures that accepted Christianity. Too often, in my opinion, scholarship about Russia created concepts about Russian culture without addressing the same or similar phenomena in other cultures. This parochialism is going away in recent years. Whether the author intended it or not, this book contributes to the weakening of that parochialism.

At least that's my opinion.

DII Cotton Dish, Decorative Oversized Towels, Perfect for Every Day Home Kitchen, Holidays and Housewarming Gifts, 18x28, Dishtowel S/3 : French Grain
I was recently in Provence and purchased some beautiful dish towels. When I returned, I regretted not getting a few more, so looked up on Amazon, of course. Most examples were exorbitantly priced, but I came across these beautiful green Jacquard ones, and the slightly higher priced rest of the line. On a whim, I purchased this color and one other. I like them so much, I have thrown out all my old ones for these incredibly beautiful and economical ones. I am happy with the weight and size. The weight is light enough to be absorbant. (Sometimes too heavy and large isn't easily used!) I have washed them, and was pleasantly surprised that they came out well from the dryer with a little wrinkling. (I had forgotten they were in the dryer and they got completely dry) Next time I will take them out while slightly damp and hang to be perfect! Couldn't be more pleased. They are actually the exact same as the ones I purchased in France, at a third of the cost. Even their most expensive towels from this line are less than buying overseas. Great product!

Primitives by Kathy 39045 Farmhouse Feed Sack Dish Towel, 28" Square, Deep South Brand
I bought this thinking I could hang it on my stove door but its so big and the writing on it is in one corner. I also thought it was going to be like an absorbent dish towel when needed but you can't absorb anything with it it is so thin. I mainly wanted it for show but I am extremely disappointed in its design and how big it is. I love all your other products so this came to me as a surprise honestly.

LIKEE Electric Balloon Pump Portable Balloon Inflator Air Blower with Balloon Arch &Garland Kit for Party Decoration(Rose Red)
This product comes in very handy for exactly what it's needed for, which is blowing up balloons. It's a little bit smaller than I I had expected it to be, but that's actually a good thing! It came with plastic pieces to hold balloon bunches together, something called balloon tape which I still haven't figured out as well as glue pieces which I also haven't figured out. I am very confused by the directions however. Without them, the only thing that is obvious is where to place the balloon, yet that is literally the only thing that the directions explain to you.
All in all though, it does come in handy. It saves a lot of time and hassle.

Several of the balloons had holes in them. The blue and the mint colors were more white than blue/green. I wouldn’t necessarily say these are pastel colored, they are muted colors. The purple was nice. Yellow was fine. Pink was more peachy but that’s fine because it went with the theme. See the pic for the balloon arch- the white was supposed to be blue/green
180 Days: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents
180 Days: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents
180 Days: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents describes the curricular plans and practices of two nationally renowned ELA teachers as they collaborated in cross-country classrooms during one school year in order to answer a question frequently asked of them by numerous educators: “How do you fit it all in?”
The answer to this question, according to the authors, begins with educators prioritizing content, skills, and daily practices which align with their core beliefs about teaching (asking “Is it worth the time?” in addition to or instead of “How do you fit it all in?”). Much of this text focuses on the authors’ philosophies regarding student-centered teaching in the realms of reading and writing, such as creating engagement and identity in students served and establishing daily instructional routines which create momentum in the classroom. The first section of the book also discusses the authors' curricular plan/map of a year reading and writing instruction. Included in these chapters is information about developing timelines and essential questions, deciding which skills to highlight, planning for end-of-unit assessments, as well as a full chapter on balancing feedback, evaluation, and grading practices (authors are very holistic in their approach). The second half of the book focuses on teaching essential discourses in writing (narrative, informational, argument, and multigenre units).
Overall, I am glad that I read this book, even though it did fall short of my expectations (I hold the authors in high regard and have thoroughly enjoyed reading previous works). The emphasis on instructional opinions/beliefs overshadowed instructional strategies, enough to tempt me to abandon the book during the first section. Very little attention was given to reading strategies (book mostly focuses on writing). The target audience also seems to be educators who teach in classrooms which fully espouse reading/writing workshop models and/or English classrooms in which writing is the main content taught (which narrows the degree to which ideas can be transferred/applied by teachers in different contexts). In spite of my lack of commonalities with issues just described, however, I was able to glean some good ideas about daily reading and writing instruction that I hope to implement in the classroom.
adidas Men's Adizero Boston 8 Running Shoe
adidas Men's Adizero Boston 8 Running Shoe
This is my third pair of Bostons. I have used them for long interval training and shorter runs in the past, and have loved them for that purpose. I tried wearing this pair for a long run last week and decided never to do that again. I'm tall and weigh approximately 200 lbs, and the forefoot cushioning in these shoes just wasn't enough for my feet over a long run. For lighter runners with a more typical distance running build, I imagine these are great distance shoes, but I don't think they were engineered for crossover athletes or any larger runners looking to put in miles.

***UPDATE*** Well, never say "never." As these shoes broke in, which happened pretty quickly, I decided to give them another shot on a longer run. They were absolutely great -- lightweight, plenty of shock absorption and a really smooth ride. I've been doing just about everything in them since. Whatever I was feeling on that initial run was more about me than the shoe. These are great.
Noche más oscura Juego de miniaturas
Noche más oscura Juego de miniaturas
Purchased the "improved" second edition set and was very disappointed. These are perfect for immediate placement on a shelf, where they would remain untouched. These figures felt cheaply made and brittle. The faces of the figures were blank and undefined. Practically every character base (the piece they stand/pose on) was warped; thin and regular sunlight on a porch/stoop could melt these. Each figure who carried a weapon (sword, staff, etc), their item was bent or curled. Beware the marketing materials - they use design graphics (which look nice and sharp) to promote this product instead of *actual* photos (which would, I imagine, show the severe flaws of these figures). To the touch, the miniatures feel brittle and unusable. Compared to Reaper Minis or the D&D licensed products, these figures are underwhelming. On the other hand, if you are looking for unplayable miniatures and want to buy for display purposes *only*, I could see where this product could be a win for you. Painted professionally and left untouched behind thick glass, you may very well have something with potential here.

There is nothing I dislike more than a highly rated product that ends up being garbage - so let me start off by telling you I am NOT an Amazon reviewer / nor did I receive this product in exchange for an “honest” review.

If you browse my history of reviews you will see I rarely leave feedback unless I feel strongly about a product (good or bad)

Years ago I found some 3” cords like these and bought the last 10 of them on clearance. They were great and lasted me for YEARS but with so many Apple devices in our home, I was down to only 2 of those cords and REALLY WANTED TO FIND SOMETHING SIMILAR TO REPLACE THEM WITH!

I have bought chargers from Amazon, Walmart & Dollar Stores and > even the Amazon chargers crap out within 8 weeks of purchase... So I was NOT expecting much from these 12” cords but I am so GLAD I BOUGHT THEM because it has been one of the BEST set of charging cords I have EVER owned!!!

They are exactly as pictured (although the smiley faces stamped on the metal fades slightly over time) The black cord is unusually thick and hearty!

Despite the high quality appearance I wondered if they would last linger than 3-8 weeks as I’m used to most cords dying by then but THESE CORDS HAVE BEEN USED & ABUSED SINCE THE DAY I RECEIVED THEM (every single one of them) ARE USED DAILY AND A FEW ARE USED CONSTANTLY WITH OLDER DEVICES THAT HAVE OLD BATTERIES.
Even if 1-2 had died by now, I might have been impressed or compelled to leave a 4 star review (without ellaborating) but EVERY SINGLE CHARGING CORD STILL WORKS AND I FEEL LIKE I HAVE FOUND A PRODUCT I CAN REALLY RELY ON NOW!

The cords have not twisted/bent or eroded.
The charger has never become hot or even warm.
There are no signs of the rubber sheath of the cord slipping, wearing or fraying.
No exposed wires - No getting “shocked” when touching the cord ( chargers from other companies have actually zapped me before...)

I have not had any issues with the lightening portion of the charger (they work regardless of which way they are inserted and I don’t have to hold the cord or tape it to my device to make it work...

Yes! having to list such things sounds silly but I have tried SO MANY CORDS and RARELY found anything worth it’s price!

THESE CORDS SHOULD NOT DISAPPOINT!
I will continue to update this review and include pics should any of this status change.
There is nothing I dislike more than paying for a cord that’s gonna end up in the trash.

THESE CORDS ARE THE BEST!

I ordered this product because I wanted to use it as a blouse for my saree for Karva Chauth. Due to COVID, all the alteration places that the boutique works with were closed.

I was so happy to try this, but I was so disappointed. Saree blouses are fitted. I usually wear a medium so instead of order a size smaller, I kept it as medium. The blouse literally ends mid-bust. You could see the bottom of my bra. I can't use this! I'm so mad. I was really looking forward to this!

Power Acoustik PDN-1060HB Double DIN with 10.6-inch Swiveling, LCD Touchscreen, DVD, CD/MP3 Car Stereo with GPS Navigation and MHL PhoneLink
The pd 1060 by power acoustik is a cool radio, it's loud and clear. Depending on how you setting your system it's not for "Bass" the sub output voltage is weak, lol really weak! I was very disappointed because I swear by power acoustik and was let down☹😢😩. The pd 1060 come with two books on how to,but the navigation book is a book on nothing but talk. My navigation doesn't work and it doesn't explain how to make map card work,so I'm stuck with a beautiful radio half functional.Damn!!! What a let down!! Don't let this stop you from buying if you are just looking for a beautiful radio that sounds great and very responsive!!

NETGEAR Insight Managed VPN Business Router (BR200) - Site-to-Site Secure VPN |Up to 256 VLANs | Supports OpenVPN and IPsec |Network Firewall Security | 4 x 1G Ethernet Ports
There's a lot to like about this router. Fast, modern, priced right, multiple management interfaces, etc. But the management interfaces aren't quite mature enough yet.

I tried to use the local web interface, which is great. Fairly intuitive, great status report, and fast. But I tried everything to get subnets on vlans to route to each other but couldn't get it to work. They were always isolated. Remote subnets worked well (were easy to route). So I tried the cloud interface and that seems to have limited configuration options. So I tried the phone app and that has more configuration but worded quite differently from the others. Fortunately when you add vlans there, it also allows you to add DHCP and then asks which other vlans the vlan should be able to work with! Just what I needed. Everything started working then.

However, now I couldn't use the local web interface (management tool). I suspect this is a tool synchronization issue. The interface didn't say that (it said there were too many bad passwords) but the latter is not true and the former is easy to imagine. So now there's no access to the wonderful traffic graphics, intuitive configuration, etc. The router is routing everything fine, but the best management option is lost.
